The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Ltd (WBFDCL), under the State Forest Department, is all set to brand honey found in the Sunderbans and make it more popular and readily available to more and more people in the State.
Considering that a large section of people in the Sundarbans earn their livelihood through the collection and sale of honey, coupled with the fact of the strong belief among many honey collected from beehives in the forest are more nourishing, provide for a viable background for creating a branding, according to a senior official of WBFDCL. He said that the government believes if branding is done following proper procedure, it will surely boost the income prospect of those associated with the honey business.
The department will train the villagers about the modern and scientific process of manufacturing of quality honey. For this, it will take assistance from experts of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. The finished product will then be tested by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) which will give the certification.
The WBFDCL will video the entire process of the production of honey and make arrangements for showcasing it at different resorts both across the State. This will make people more convinced about the quality of honey and make them buy it, from counters to be set up at these resorts.
