Government to set up new night shelters in the city
The administration is planning to increase the number of night shelters for homeless people in Kolkata. The Mayor of Kolkata is going to hold a meeting with the Commissioner of Police in this regard. The Mayor has requested Lalbazar to share data regarding the number of homeless people and which areas are they concentrated in the city.
Based on the response, the KMC will decide how many night shelters will be built in the city. KMC is contemplating the use of municipal offices and schools as night shelters. In addition, new night shelters will also be built.
There are 43 night shelters in the city right now. The KMC has already built five night shelters. They are located at Chetla Ghat, Northern Park, Gauri Bari, Ghalib Street and Raja Manindra Road. The other shelters have been constructed by the Department of Social Welfare.
