Bangla no. 1 in GI registrations

Bangla no. 1 in GI registrations

Bangla has become number one in the country in the number of GI registration for financial year (FY) 2017-18. Nine registrations have been given to products indigenous to the State.

A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which correspond to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g. a town, region, or country).

Besides rosogolla, or Banglar rosogolla, as the official registered name, gobindobhog rice, tulaipanji rice, terracotta craft of Panchmura village in Bankura, dokra, patachitra, chhau mask, wooden mask of Kushmandi (in Dakshin Dinajpur) and madur kathi were given registrations as geographical indications.

November 14, the day on which rosogolla got the GI tag, has been designated as Rosogolla Day by the Bangla Government.

There are a total of 21 products or crafts which have been given GI registrations for their being indigenous to Bangla.
