Cage culture of bhetki to be taken up by State Govt

After a successful pilot project by the State Government’s West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences last year , cage culture of bhetki would be taken up on a large scale along the coast in the districts of Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas.
To begin with, the bhetki would be cultured in 200 cages – 100 in each district. The cages would be floated at places where the depth to the sea floor is more than 26 feet. They would be kept floating with the help of buoys, and would be anchored to the seabed.
Fishing nets 12 feet long would be attached to the cages, in which would be released the bhetki hatchlings. They would grow to their adult sizes within these nets, from which they would then be retrieved. The cultivation of the fish would take place for nine months every year.
