Lok Sabha MP Dr Sharmila Sarkar’s Zero Hour mention on the need for the Union government to urgently fill up the large number of faculty and non-faculty vacancies at AIIMS Kalyani

Madam, thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak on current status of AIIMS, Kalyani of West Bengal. When the AIIMS at Kalyani was approved in October 2015, it was hoped that it would provide state-of-the art healthcare to the people of Bengal
and function as a viable alternative to AIIMS, Delhi. However, 10 years down the line, critical operational deficiencies have severely crippled its functioning. Out of a total 309 sanctioned faculty posts in 2025-26, 139 posts are vacant, that is 45 per cent posts are still lying vacant. Similarly, out of 221 non-faculty sanctioned posts, 55 per cent of the seats are vacant. These manpower shortages gravely compromise patient services, teaching and researches. AIIMS, Kalyani was envisaged as a 960-bedded hospital with all modern facilities, yet currently, only 568 beds are operational, and critical care is also crippled with only 16 functional beds in trauma and emergency services, and not a single ventilator ambulance is available there. These shortfalls are causing immense hardship to patients with a waiting period of 6 to 12 months or more to get an operation date. The staff shortages also impose disproportionate workload and mental pressure on the existing staff. Hence, I urge the Government to urgently intervene to ensure that AIIMS, Kalyani delivers its promise of delivering affordable, accessible and advanced health care without any further delay.
