Trinamool’s protest march against Opposition’s smear campaign

Trinamool Congress took out a protest march today in Kolkata in response to the false allegations, slander and misinformation that the Opposition has been spreading. It was led by senior leaders of the party.

The protest march started at 3.30 PM from Sealdah Railway Station complex and wound down at the Dorina Crossing in Esplanade, passing through Beliaghata Road, AJC Bose Road, Moulali and SN Banerjee Road along the way.

Mamata Banerjee has constantly slammed the Left Front for taking the State back by decades during its 34-year-rule; and now, instead of fighting politically, they are intent on maligning the characters of leaders. As she said recently, “Let them compete with us on the plank of development and progress. Judge us on the parameter of work done; judge us on the basis of our performance. But the Opposition is afraid to do that.”

Will not allow division of Bengal: Mamata Banerjee in Terai and Dooars

Mamata Banerjee addressed rallies at Nagrakata and Kalchini in the districts of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar.

Mamata Banerjee has been campaigning in north Bengal since March 14 and has already held rallies in Phansidewa and Kurseong. She also held a padayatra in Matigara to commemorate the historic Nandigram Divas.

Will not allow division of Bengal: Mamata Banerjee in the Terai and the Dooars

Nobody has come to north Bengal so many times for the sake of the people. There was a long-standing demand for a separate district, hence we formed Alipurduar district. We have done improvements in every sector in north Bengal. The district has 100% coverage of electricity.

On tea gardens

Around 8 crore people get rice at subsidised price. People in tea gardens are given rice at 47 paise/kg. We have set up a fund of Rs 100 Crore for the welfare of tea garden workers.

On development

Trinamool Congress has worked for development of the area so that the people are benefited… We give monthly allowances to our folk artists. We have constructed homes for the poor under Geetanjali scheme. We have distributed pattas of land to the landless. We have made healthcare free at Government hospitals. We do not charge any money for beds and medicines. The amount of work done by our Maa, Mati, Manush government in the last four years is unmatched in India. We have also launched several projects for the welfare of my Adivasi brothers and sisters. In giving due respect to all languages, we have set up a Hindi college in Banarhat. We have given second language status to Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Ol Chiki, Gurmukhi. We have also set up an Urdu Academy. We have served the people immensely in the last four years and will continue to do so in the future. We are seeking people’s votes based on the work we have done. We have started insurance scheme for self-help groups. Teachers are getting their salaries on time. We have made healthcare free in the State. All households are receiving electricity now. 8 out of 9 crore people in Bengal are receiving rice at Rs 2/kg under Khadya Sathi. From multi super speciality hospitals to ITIs to polytechnic colleges to Karma Tirtha, we have done it all.

On the rainbow alliance

The Opposition does not talk of development and performance. They only spread lies and engage in smear campaign. They only peddle negativity and divisive politics. Congress and CPI(M) have given up their ideology to form an alliance. CP(M)-Congress-BJP and a section of the media have hatched conspiracies against us. I would like to tell all those who want to fight us, Jo hum se takrayega, chur chur ho jayega. Congress-CPI(M)-BJP have formed a rainbow alliance, but they will not get ‘Dilli ka laddoo’. They will get a big ZERO. Let the Opposition fight us on the plank of development and harmony. Those who have bled Bengal for 34 years, carried out political violence for decades are giving us lectures now. If they want to fight us, do so politically. Do not try your dirty tricks. They are trying to malign our character. The alliance between CPI(M)-Congress is sans ideology. It is a nexus for opportunism. CPI(M) incurred huge debts and we are still paying for their deeds. We have given job security to contractual and casual workers. CPI(M) destroyed the State for 34 years whereas BJP has crores of party funds.

On the unity of the Hills

Some political leaders say one thing in the Plains and the opposite in the Hills. Till my last breath I will protect the unity of the State. Terai-Dooars-Hills will remain united. CPI(M) used to oppose the division of Bengal in the past. Now they are supporting the GJM in the Hill. For the development to continue seamlessly, we have formed several development boards for different communities in the Hills. Jalpaiguri is a beautiful district bordered by the Hills on one side and lush-green forest on the other. I have visited north Bengal several times and will keep coming here. Those who were in power in the past neglected this district. I’ve visited Jalpaiguri innumerable times. No one else cared about them before, they tried hard to incite violence but we did not allow any untoward incident in the State. During CPI(M) rule, people of Hills and Terai were pitted against each other. Now there is only peace. We are promoting tourism in Jalpaiguri district and eco-tourism at Gajoldoba.

On education

We have set up Hindi College in Banarhat. 31 lakh girls are receiving Kanyashree scholarships. 40 lakh students will get Sabuj Sathi cycles. We have initiated Shikshashree scholarships for SC/ST students. 16 lakh students have benefitted. Over 1 crore minority students have received scholarships. This is the highest in the country

On Trinamool

Our government is for the people, with the people. We work for people of all castes, tribes, communities and religions. Our party flag is our credential. We follow an ideology.

Trinamool will win more seats than the past. Smear campaigns against us will never work. We cannot sell our flags for political benefits. The motto of Trinamool is to maintain communal harmony. We do not discriminate among people.

Sokal sokal bendhe jot, joraphool ey sob vote.
Sheet, grishyo, borsha, Trinamool Congress manush er bhorsha.
Raha gulshan toh joraphool zaroor khilenge. Aanewale election mein zabardast jitenge

Common people of the State are with us. Opposition cannot defeat us with their canards and lies. We trust the people of Bengal. We have them by our side. The Maa, Mati, Manush of Bengal will bless us.

Vivek Gupta on the lack of water at Farakka Dam

Sir, through you I would like to report that between yesterday and the day before yesterday, the Farakka Dam has completely stopped working. 2100 MW of power is no longer available to the region of Bengal and in neighbouring states like Jharkhand and Bihar. Apart from electricity, even clean drinking water is not available to the people of the region. When enquiries were made, we are were told this is due to the lack of water at the Farakka Dam. What lack of water? Sir, I do not know.

Through you, Sir, I urge the Centre to take immediate and drastic measures to restore water supply to the Farakka Dam so that electricity generation is restarted.

Sir, many years ago the sitting government in Delhi lost elections due to water crisis. I hope there is no connection of this incident with the upcoming Bengal elections. I hope not.

I hope lakhs and crores of people who are suffering daily are given immediate relief. Sir, officials have gone on record to say that till March 21, there is no way that normalcy can be restored. Sir, in ten days the amount of damage that will be done to the people due to lack of electricity and water will be tremendous.

Sir, through you, I would like to urge the Minister to give some reply on this matter today itself and inform us as to what steps he plans to take to solve this emergency, or else, Sir, this issue would turn into a national calamity and a national crisis.

Thank you.

No politics in the development of the Hills: Mamata Banerjee in Kurseong

Mamata Banerjee addressed a campaign rally in Kurseong today.

The first phase of her campaign in North Bengal, for the 2016 Assembly election began yesterday. She addressed a huge rally in Matigara near Siliguri. She also took part in a procession to remember the martyrs of Nandigram, massacred on March 14, 2007.

She threw down the gauntlet at the Congress-CPI(M)-BJP combine, challenging them to fight her politically and not indulge in smear campaigns.

Mamata Banerjee harped on the developmental works done by her Trinamool Congress Government in West Bengal over the last five years, works which have won the government international and national laurels.

Here are some of the excerpts of her speech:

  • My brothers and sisters of the Hills, I have come here to seek your support/
  • I want the development of the Hills from the core of my heart.
  • We are supporting Harka Bahadur Chhetri for the Kalimpong seat. TMC has not fielded any candidate there.
  • Did any party ever field a person from the Hills as a candidate in the plains? We fielded Baichung in Siliguri.
  • In the last four years I came to the Hills multiple times. Has anyone visited the Hills in the past?
  • Whenever there were natural calamities in the Hills, I was the first person to visit.
  • I know the alleys and lanes of the Hills better than the local leaders.
  • I love my brothers and sisters from the Hills. I have a connection of the heart with you.
  • I do not say one thing in the Hills and something else in the plains. I love all equally.
  • I want to carry the development of Hills forward.
  • It is easy to destroy but very difficult to create new things and pursue progress.
  • We formed the GTA, allocated crores of rupees for development & formed several development boards for different communities.
  • We do not support politics over development. We do not believe in fear tactics. We want to work for people.
  • Let the Opposition hatch as many conspiracies as they want. We are not afraid. We work for the people honestly.
  • We are ready to give a fitting reply to Opp politically. People will bowl them out in elections.
  • We want the youth to have better prospects in future.
  • If the Hills remain peaceful, tourists will come, there will be business and economy will prosper.
  • We do not want Bandhs in the Hills.
  • People wanted Kalimpong to be declared as a new district. We fulfilled that demand.
  • We have made Mirik a new sub-division. We have undertaken several water supply projects.
  • An education hub is coming up in Kurseong.
  • We want new tourist spots to come up in the Hills. We want more and more people to come to Darjeeling.
  • People have to stand up against fear tactics adopted by some parties.
  • I challenge the Opp parties to compete with me on the development plank; compete with me in working for the people.
  • I want to see a united Darjeeling. I will never seek votes on the plank of divisiveness.
  • Some people do not want me to come to the Hills. Who are they to stop me? This is my motherland.
  • In the past CPI(M) used to say they will not allow division of Bengal. Now they are supporting Bimal Gurung.
  • The ‘joraphool’ symbol of Trinamool represents communal harmony. We want unity of all people.
  • We are here to work for people & will continue to do so. Those who have been elected by people in the Hills earlier must do their work.

Don’t resort to smear campaigns – fight Mamata Banerjee politically

Excerpts from the speech made by Mamata Banerjee at Phansidewa, Siliguri today

On the rainbow alliance

Congress, BJP and CPI(M) have formed a rainbow alliance. The Opposition has no shame. For 34 years, CPI(M) did not perform any developmental activities. They only indulged in political violence. Congress and BJP exploited the separate statehood demand in the Hills for winning Lok Sabha elections. CPI(M), which used to say it will not allow a separate State in the Hills, is extending support to some parties today. It is supporting BJP’s ally in the Hills. What we have been saying all along has come out in the open. Haat-Haturi-Poddo/ Siliguri te hobe jobdo.

They cannot fight us politically, so they try to spread canards against us. When it comes to development, CPI(M) and Congress cannot match us. What has BJP done at the Centre for the last two years? The Opposition is playing dirty politics over tea gardens. I ask the comrades of CPI(M) to clear their stand on Gorkhaland. The masks are off. The ‘alliance’ of CPI(M) and Congress is out in the open.

On development

We have distributed Kisan Credit Cards and set up Kisan Bazaars for farmers. We have set up ITIs and polytechnic colleges for the youth. We have launched Kanyashree Scheme for girl students. Lakhs of students are getting Sabuj Sathi bicycles. Healthcare is free in Bengal now. No one has to pay any money for beds and medicines in Government health centres. Over eight crore people in the State, out of the nine crore, receive rice at Rs 2 a kg. We have started social security schemes for 70 lakh workers. Although the Centre has stopped funds for ICDS, we are funding the project. We have started insurance schemes for them. We have done the work of four decades in four years. All the Opposition does is indulge in smear campaigns.

On North Bengal

We are here to work for the people and will continue to serve them. We set up a branch secretariat for North Bengal, which was a long-standing demand of the people.

On Trinamool

We are here to work for the people and will continue to serve them. Trinamool is the only party that works for the poor. We can lay down our lives but never sell our souls. The conspiracies of the Opposition will not work. People do not trust them. They will end up with a big zero on counting day. Trinamool Congress is a party of the people. We ask our opponents to fight us politically. We believe in Laxman Rekha. Just because it is election time we cannot indulge in smear campaign. We do not indulge in politics of opportunism. We do not practice the politics of discrimination. We will never allow the Hills and the plains to be divided. We will all live together in peace and harmony. They cannot fight us politically, so they try to spread canards against us. Bengal is a confluence of cultures. People can celebrate any festival here without fear. Our pledge is to establish Bengal as the best in the world.

On Nandigram Divas

Today is Nandigram Divas. We will organise a padayatra in memory of the martyrs today. Nandigram witnessed state-sponsored terrorism nine years ago. We have not forgotten Nandigram, Netai, Marichjhanpi, Sainbari, Coochbehar. Days of terror are over. We have put an end to violence. People are smiling – from the Hills to Sagar.

On Maa-Mati-Manush

We trust the people of Bengal. We know they will shower their blessings on us. We have restored democracy in Bengal. We have put an end to political violence. We are the party of Maa, Mati, Manush. CPI(M)-BJP-Congress can never defeat us.

Nandigram Divas: 9th anniversary of the massacre during CPI(M) rule

Mamata Banerjee led a procession today to commemorate the martyrs who fell to the bullets of police and cadres, under the instructions of CPI(M).

In January 2007, farmers in Nandigram erupted in protest against a proposed special economic zone (SEZ).

On March 14, the then Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya sent 2,500 policemen to ‘recapture’ Nandigram, but unofficially, they were accompanied by CPI(M) cadres.

Officially, 14 farmers died in the firing, but over 100 were declared “missing”. A similar attempt in November by the cadres finally ‘recaptured’ Nandigram. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya showed no remorse as he said, “They (farmers and Trinamool activists) have been paid back in their own coin.”

In its final report, the People’s Tribunal on Nandigram had called the violence of March 14, 2007 a “pre-planned, state-sponsored massacre” carried out “to teach a lesson” to people opposing the SEZ project on their land.

The Tribunal report, handed over to Gopal Krishna Gandhi, Governor of West Bengal on August 8, also called for the re-arrest of the ten CPI(M) cadres taken into custody earlier by the CBI but let off on bail due to the deliberate laxity of the West Bengal State police in filing charges against them within the statutory period.

West Bengal has had unparalleled success in agriculture under the Trinamool Congress

In the last five years, West Bengal has had unparalleled success in agriculture: The State has received the Krishi Karman Award for three years consecutively, which is a record yet to be broken.

West Bengal’s agriculture and rural development expenditure has become five-and-a-half times of that previously. As a result, the agriculture sector in the State has grown tremendously: The 2015-16 value for growth of agriculture, forestry and fishery in West Bengal was 5.55%, as against 1.1% for India.

The production of foodgrains has increased to 17.4 million tonnes (2014) from 14.8 million tonnes (2011). West Bengal is contributing more than 8% of the countrie’s food production from only 2.7% of the land. During 2013-14, the State produced 153.14 lakh MT rice and thus retained the leadership in rice production in the country, notwithstanding aggressive crop diversification. 300,000 landless individuals have received pattas.

The amount of affordable credit the State extends to the farmers, through the distribution of Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs) has gone up almost two-and-a-half times, from 26.57 lakh KCCs, as in March 2011 to Rs 69 lakh in December 2015. West Bengal is the first State where subsidy/grant is directly paid into the KCC/bank account of the farmers.

The increased production levels have ensured the prosperity of the farmers. The per farmer household annual income has increased remarkably, to Rs 1,60,000, as on March 31, 2014.

The area, production and productivity of pulses and oilseeds have increased tremendously too.

To improve the knowledge base of farmers, several initiatives have been taken, like

  • transfer of technology by demonstrations through training more than 10 lakh farmers
  • creating awareness through regular television and radio programmes, and other extension tools like literature, advertisement, etc.
  • launching a tab-based service titled ‘Matir Katha’ in 2013 – a first in India
  • organising of yearly fairs like Krishi Mela (in each block), Mati Utsab and Krishi Katha, and meetings with farmers, etc. wherein farmers interact with experts and with each other.

To cater to the needs of improved weather advisory to the farmers, 145 automated weather stations have been established throughout the State.

Last but not the least, the better production and hence income of farmers has also been due to the convergence of the Agriculture Department with Irrigation, Power, Marketing, Co-operative, Disaster Management, Horticulture, Animal Resources Development and others.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has always given special emphasis to farmers. As a result of that, their condition and that of the agricultural sector have improved tremendously. Increased production has led to improved incomes, suitably aided by technology.
