Agnikanya Mamata Banerjee would remain an example all over the country: Abhishek

Trinamool Youth Congress President and MP Abhishek Banerjee addressed a rally organised by the south Kolkata Trinamool youth Congress at Hazra on Sunday in preparation for the Trinamool Congress’ annual Ekushe July Saheed Divas in Dharmatallah in memory of 13 Youth Congress activists who were killed in police firing on 21 July, 1993 during a law violation programme in the city.

The Youth Congress leader lashed out at the opposition and the media for what he called hatching a conspiracy against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by “belittling” her performances in last four and a half years.

Listing the Trinamool Congress Government’s achievements, Abhishek said “the immense” contribution made by the West Bengal Chief Minister “for which the people of Bengal fondly call her the Agnikanya”, would remain an example all over the country, particularly her initiative to resolve the crises in Janmgalmahal and in Darjeeling hills, besides the innumerable developmental projects undertaken by her government.

Abhishek said he would not hesitate to praise the Trinamool Congress Chairperson considering her “selfless sacrifice to the cause of the people and exemplary courage, now-adays a rare quality among the politicians”.

Coming down heavily against the media, as also the CPI-M, BJP and Congress, he said “a conspiracy” was hatched against Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, but hastened to add that the “war against the people will not pay”. “I find that the media and the opposition have waged a war on the Chief Minister who stands for the people and whose life is dedicated to the cause of the people. No use waging such a war against the people,” he warned.

The TMYC leader took a dig at those political leaders “who have no other job but to criticise the Chief Minister and find fault with her government only in the TV screen”, and said “I would like to ask these politicians to be answerable to the people for the job they are doing for the masses”. Recalling the contribution of Mamata in ensuring introduction of photo identity cards to voters, he said “May I ask if the opposition friends are aware of this?”

Sunday’s rally was attended by All-India Trinamool Congress Secretary-General Partha Chatterjee, Kolkata Mayor Sobhan Chatterjee, Trinamool Chief Whip in Assembly Sobhandeb Chatterjee, Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim, Trinamool President Subrata Bakshi, among party’s south Kolkata district leaders.

We will work, we will fight, we will build: Abhishek Banerjee at Asansol

Trinamool Youth Congress President Abhishek Banerjee addressed a mass rally yesterday at Girja More in Asansol which was a curtain raiser for the 21st July Saheed Divas commemoration. He said, “West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee will be in power for the next 50 years due to the amount of work that has been done in the last four years. There is no place in Bengal where she has made a commitment and the work has not been done. The amount of developmental work that this State Government has done cannot be compared to the work any State Government for the last 50 years.” “The more some other parties and media houses use slander campaigning against us, the stronger will Trianmool Congress get,” he said.

He attacked the BJP by questioning why they had not protested with the Prime Minister even as he has stopped paying for the 100 days job program and has slashed the funds of most other programs. He categorically stated that the BJP’s plan of threatening with CBI and ED will not work and that the more BJP uses such tactics, the more progress will speed up in Bengal and protests gain momentum.

The Trinamool Youth Congress President stated that the Left parties do not have any existence in the state and that the people of this state have broken their limbs and spine through the democratic process and now they will not be able to stand up in the next 100 years. He went on to say that the slogan for Trinamool now is “We will work, we will fight, we will build”.

WB Govt paid Rs 76000 Cr on debt servicing, a legacy of Left: Amit Mitra

West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra said that in the last four years, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government had to spend Rs 76,000 crore on debt servicing, a legacy of the erstwhile Left government.

In real terms, the present government has taken only Rs 6,000 crore loans in the last four years, which was a very meagre amount compared to the previous government, he said.

The Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee has maintained that she inherited a huge debt left behind by the erstwhile Left government.

Dr Mitra explained how the state government had been able to multiply expenses in the sectors like social infrastructure, development of physical infrastructure, state plan expenses and capital expenditure.

The government has been able to raise the growth of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) above 5 per cent successively in the last four years of TMC rule as against below 5 per cent registered by the previous Left regime.

Bengal striding ahead in higher education sector

During the first three years of the Trinamool Government, the spending by all departments has been 50 to 80% higher that the spending during the last three years of the Left Front Government.

This stupendous performance for three consecutive years was never achieved by the Left Front Government.  The reason for this performance can be easily gauged by examining the money spent by the Trinamool Government during the last four financial years.

Higher plan expenditure

The plan expenditure during the last year of the Left Front Government, that is, 2010-11, was Rs 11,838 crore. The plan expenditure for 2015-16 has been pegged at Rs 49,507 crore, an increase of 4.18 times. The same for 2014-15 was 3.6 times more. Hence, it is obvious that the Trinamool Government is spending much more on various projects, and the results are there for all to see.

The highest amount to be spent during 2015-16, as per the plan expenditure numbers, would be in the education sector – 18.71% of the total expenditure. For panchayat and rural development, the spend has been pegged at 17.31% of the Budget.

Budget: Four-five times that of the Left Front

  • For 2015-16, the expenditure in school, higher education and vocational education has been kept at Rs 9270,97,00,000. The amount spent under the same head during the last year of the Left Front Government (2010-11) was Rs 1885,54,00,000. Thus there is an increase of 4.92 times
  • During 2014-15, the amount was Rs 7143,27,00,000, which is 3.8 times that of 2010-11
  • Since the spending has been four to five times more, consequently, it can be conveniently assumed that the development in the relevant sector has also been four to five times more

Education: Achievements

The comparative quantitative achievements of the Trinamool Government and the Left Front Government in the education sector

  • Universities: 13, from 1947-2011, and 13, from 2010-11 to January 2014) (6 state-aided and 7, private)
  • ITI colleges: 80, from 1947-2011, and 43, from 2010-11 to January 2014) (92 more planned during 2015-16)
  • Polytechnic colleges: 62, from 1947-2011, and 34, from 2010-11 to January 2014) (32 more planned during 2015-16)
  • Government colleges: 36, from 1947-2011, and 40, from 2010-11 to January 2014
  • Health Districts and district hospitals: This is also a concept introduced by the Trinamool Government – 8 of each
  • Higher primary schools:  497, from 1947-2011, and 3008, from 2010-11 to January 2014
  • Primary schools: 184, from 1947-2011, and more than 400, from 2010-11 to January 2014
  • Model English schools: None earlier; 12, from 2010-11 to January 2014) (22 more planned during 2015-16)

West Bengal’s debt repayment burden to multiply: Amit Mitra

West Bengal’s annual debt repayment burden would grow sharply in coming years as maturity dates of the loans taken by the previous Left Front government were drawing closer, state Finance Minister Amit Mitra said.

Replying during the Question Hour in the Assembly, Mitra said during 2015-16, the debt repayment amount would be Rs 8,877 crore, which is set to rise to Rs 9,781 crore in the next financial year.

In 2017-18, the amount would multiply to reach Rs 18,359 crore which, he said, would be a great burden on the state, Mitra said. According to him, this will happen as ten, 12 and 15 years loan were going to mature.

Mitra said that the state government was making provisions towards this and also by sticking to fiscal and revenue discipline. He said that one silver lining was that the state GDP was rising at a rapid pace while the debt/GSDP ratio was falling.

Attacking the Left Front, Mitra said that the loan burden as on March, 2015 as per revised estimates was Rs 2.74 lakh crore. When the Trinamool Congress came to power in May, 2011, the inherited debt was close to Rs 2 lakh crore.

In the first four years of TMC rule, the debt increased by Rs 82,946 crore, out of which Rs 76,346 crore were spent towards interest and principal repayment.

During the four years from 2011, the ruling government had borrowed only Rs 6,617 crore which was used for its own spending, Mitra said.

Pointing out that West Bengal was caught in a debt trap, Mitra said that he and the chief minister have discussed the matter with the UPA government and the present NDA government for amortisation of the debt repayment schedule, but there was no positive outcome from either of them.

The UPA government offered $10 billion to the IMF for tackling the Eurozone crisis, but ignored the cry of a federal state which was in deep distress, he regretted. He also accused the Left Front of breaching the borrowing limit under FRBM Act.
