Opposition playing cheap and mean politics with Singur: Partha Chatterjee

Trinamool Congress Secretary General Dr Partha Chatterjee, while speaking at a function commemorating the 153rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda at Anandanagar in Singur came down heavily on the Opposition for playing cheap and mean politics with the Singur issue for their narrow political gains.

Dr Partha Chatterjee said that the CPI-M never wanted an industry to come up at Singur. The forcible acquiring of very fertile agriculture land by the then Left Front government was the greatest blunder, he said.

Trinamool Congress Chairperson Mamata Banerjee fasted for 26 days demanding the return of the fertile agricultural land to the unwilling farmers and then to sort out an amicable solution in favour of the Nano project at Singur, but the then adamant chief minister failed to bring about an amicable solution resulting in the withdrawal of the Nano project by the Industrial giant, Dr Chatterjee said.

Dr Chatterjee said that the CPI-M were creating unwanted hurdles to the return of agriculture land to the unwilling farmers. Dr Chatterjee also ridiculed the proposed Congress and CPI-M pact to fight the state Assembly election jointly.

He said the proposed alliance of the congress and CPM is motivated with hunger for political power. They are underestimating the good sense of the common people. The common people will go for progress and development but not for faulty politics and dictatorship once again, he said.

Trinamool observes 18th Foundation Day

Derek slams BJP for ‘cowboy constitutionalism’

Leader of the Trinamool Congress in Rajya Sabha, Derek O’Brien today slammed the BJP for its ‘cowboy constitutionalism’. He was speaking during a special discussion on the occasion of 125th birth anniversary year of Dr BR Ambedkar and Constitution Day.

He slammed Arun Jaitley, the Leader of the House, for his disparate remarks about the legality of Rajya Sabha. Citing the example of how the Constituent Assembly was indirectly elected by State Legislatures, Derek said that this was a precursor to the Rajya Sabha.

Spree of Ordinances

Derek O’Brien went on to take on the spree of Ordinances under the current government. “For every ten Bills passed, the number of Ordinances under Pandit Nehru was one, during Janata Party rule it was 1.2. During the UPA 2 regime, 1.9 Ordinances were passed for every ten Bills. In the last 18 months, the number has gone up to three. This is another instance of cowboy constitutionalism of the BJP,” he said.

Actions not words

Highlighting the fact that the Constituent Assembly drafted the Constitution in less than three years, Derek rued the fact that several key bills, like Women’s Reservation Bill, were pending now for decades. “It is time for action. Trinamool Congress believes in action. 35% (12 out of 34) of our MPs in Lok Sabha are women,” he said.

Secularism debate

Speaking about secularism, Derek said that the line separating the fringe and the mainstream was fast blurring. Voices of divisiveness, which had gone silent for the last 10-12 years, were speaking up again. “We have to decide which idea of India we will adopt,” he said while slamming the divisive ideology of Guru Gowalkar. He quoted Mamata Banerjee, who in December, 2014, had said, “The Constitution is the only holy book of this great nation.”

Federalism

Derek O’Brien slammed the Centre on the issue of federalism. “On one hand you celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar and on the other hand you cut funds for BRGF which benefits backward castes,” he said. He raised the issue of devolution of funds and criticised the Centre’s decision to delink funds for 8 schemes and tinkering with funds for 24 other schemes.

Constructive suggestion

While concluding his speech Derek gave a constructive suggestion of setting up of CAM (Constituent Assembly Modules) where young students can participate and share their ideas.

TMC dubs CPI-M processions as effort to bring back terror days

Trinamool Congress described the processions organised by the CPI(M) in rural areas as a bid to bring back the “days of terror” in the state.

The TMC leadership accused the Marxists of trying to unleash terror and capture villages ahead of the Assembly polls in the state in the name of organising ‘jathas’ (processions).

“They are trying to create a reign of terror ahead of Assembly polls and trying to capture villages. But people will give them a befitting reply,” TMC Secretary-General and state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee said.

Trinamool wants Parliament to function: Sudip Bandopadhyay

Ahead of the Winter Session this week, Trinamool Congress on Saturday said it does not favour disrupting of Parliament proceedings and will raise issues of intolerance, communal harmony and strengthening of federal structure in the House.

“The strategy of our party is yet to be decided. It will be decided after discussions with our party chief Mamata Banerjee. But yes, we want the Parliament to function properly. We don’t want any disruption of the house,” TMC Parliamentary Party leader in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandopadhyay said.

“If Parliament functions smoothly, we will be able to raise the burning issues of the country such as price rise, intolerance, threat to secularism and others. We can make the government answerable for these issues,” he said.

Sudip Bandopadhyay said, “The issue of intolerance and threat to communal harmony will top our agenda.”

“Never before has India gone through such an intolerant atmosphere. We want to raise this issue of intolerance in the Parliament. We have always spoken in favour of strengthening communal harmony of our country. In the present situation the communal harmony too is under threat,” he added.

The MP also lashed out at the Centre for interfering in the federal structure of the country.

“We have always spoken in favour of strengthening the federal structure and for more powers to the states. But under the present regime at the centre, the Prime Minister is calling up chief secretaries of the state bypassing the chief ministers.

“Is this the way you protect the federal structure, which is the basis of our country? We all need to strengthen the federal structure,” he added.

CPI(M) trying to create an atmosphere of violence in Bengal: Trinamool

Lashing out at the CPI(M), Secretary General of the party Partha Chatterjee today said that the communist party is trying to incite violence in the State in the name of political movements.

Taking a dig at CPI(M)’s ‘jatha’ he said such tactics of capturing rural areas cannot be allowed in a democratic set up. “The Opposition is taking political initiatives only to make headlines. They cannot win people’s trust like this,” he added.

He also remarked that the Opposition is jealous of the developmental initiatives launched in the last four years by Mamata Banerjee and was thus trying to stay relevant through headlines in the media.

“We have no problem with democratic means of political movement. We cannot allow plans to capture villages by force,” Partha Chatterjee said.

“For 34 years, CPM ruled through violence, terror, fear mongering and force. People witnessed development under Mamata Banerjee,” he added.
