Here is her latest poem on ‘Intolerance’:

Mamata Banerjee meets newly elected councillors, announces names of Mayor

Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee today met all the new councillors at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra.

The winning councillors were directed by party All India General Secretary Subrata Bakshi to attend the programme.

Trinamool has emerged victorious in the controversy-ridden October 3 polls with a significantly increased vote-share.

The party won all 16 seats in Bally with a vote share of 76%. At Bidhannagar, Trinamool won 37 out of 41 seats securing a vote share of 62%. In Asansol, the party won 46% votes, winning 74 out of 106 wards.

TMC sweeps civic polls, victory of development over disruptive politics says party

The Trinamool Congress made a clean sweep of the three civic bodies, including the high profile Bidhannagar-Rajarhat municipal corporation, the Asansol municipal corporation and the Bally-Howrah municipal corporation – the results for which were declared today.

The victories reiterate the Trinamool Congress’ continuing hold over urban electorate. The scale and margin of the victories were some indication that the opposition political space has shrunk to a great extent and the Trinamool Congress’s supremacy was still unchallenged – four and half years after it had come to power in 2011. The state goes for the assembly elections middle of 2016.

Final Tally:

Bidhannagar – TMC wins in 37 out of 41 wards

Asansol – TMC wins in 75 out of 106 wards

Bally – TMC wins in all 16 wards

Vote Share:

Bidhannagar – 62%

Asansol – 46%

Bally – 75%

Reaction of Subrata Mukherjee on today’s verdict:

  • There cannot be politics without people. Opposition leaders can only be seen in TV studios

Thousands protest against unholy nexus of the opposition in Trinamool Maha Michhil

Trinamool Congress organized a mega rally today to protest against the collective effort of rejected parties to trample over democracy. The Maha Michhil started from College Square and ended at Rani Rashmoni Avenue.

Senior leaders discuss strategies at Maha Michhil

At the end of the Maha Michhil, Trinamool Secretary General Partha Chatterjee addressed the party activists. Those who want to destroy democracy will be defeated by the force of the people, he said. Since the opposition cannot win the hearts of the people they want to cause chaos among them, he said. When Mamata Banerjee is taking Bengal ahead, parties which ruined Bengal for 3 decades are conspiring to derail growth, he said at the end of the Maha Michhil.

Firhad Hakim addresses Trinamool activists

State Cabinet Minister Firhad Hakim said that the Trinamool Chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee follows only one principle – “for the people, by the people and of the people”.

Trinamool Youth Congress President and MP Abhishek Banerjee said in his short address that the days’ gathering proves the strength of the people and the strength of Mamata Banerjee. “We don’t need fake display of strength. Development of Bengal speaks for itself,” he said. Bengal has rejected the unholy nexus of the opposition parties conspired to malign Trinamool Congress. The people will bring Mamata Banerjee to power again because they have seen the development of this state, Abhishek Banerjee said.

BJP has finally found its leader in ‪‎Bengal: Derek O’Brien

I usually write an opinion or analysis post, explaining my, or my party’s, position on an issue. Today, I’m going to break news: the BJP has finally found its leader in West Bengal and its face for the 2016 assembly election. The active politician who’s going to front for the party and in effect handle its campaign is Kesrinath Tripathi. As it happens, he is the governor of the state. And the incumbent in Raj Bhawan is supposed to be apolitical, and meant to be scrupulously neutral, especially in these days of so-called “cooperative federalism”.

Yes, governors have been misused by earlier governments, especially the Congress. Yes, it is a fact that unlike the President – who has key constitutional duties and is at least indirectly elected by legislators at the national and state level – the governor has nothing much to do. Raj Bhawans have been reduced to retirement postings for political has-beens.

We expected this culture to change, with the BJP-led government promising a relook at the utility of public positions, taking time to choose those it considered appropriate for a job (which is why the PMO is sitting on so many files and has still not filled so many crucial vacancies in the Central government, 18 months after coming to power). We expected that the Prime Minister and his team would be true to their promise of “cooperative federalism” and at least consult state governments and not send saboteurs to Raj Bhawan, but upright and apolitical people.

Instead we have got more of the same. Busy-bodies and failed politicians, those who couldn’t make it to the top rung of the BJP or were no longer useful to the current boss men of the party, have been kicked upstairs. Unfortunately, their instincts and their KRAs (Key Result Areas) have been defined by their appointing authorities in Delhi and are largely to do with sabotaging and harassing duly elected and popular governments in states, and using the Raj Bhawan to further the propaganda of the BJP.

Under Mr Tripathi, Raj Bhawan has become a hotbed of intrigue and virtually the state headquarters of the BJP. Almost every day, party leaders and ideologues seem to meet here to discuss new ways of needling the Mamata Banerjee government. The latest excuse is the unfortunately and condemnable violence, limited to a few pockets, that accompanied municipal polls last week.

The Trinamool Congress denounces such incidents, as long-term victims of political violence at the hands of CPI(M) goons, we are very sensitive to such concerns. The police is investigating and doing its job. The guilty will be punished. If it is found that a few of the trouble-makers have a link with the ruling party, it will not matter. As I write this, three people have already been arrested. But it is not for the BJP pracharak cum governor to poke his nose and play judge, jury and executioner.

On behalf of Trinamool, I must emphasise that the party doesn’t need to resort to violence to win elections. Mamatadi will lead us to victory, in the municipal elections and the assembly elections in a few months. We have won every election since 2008, and handsomely. Our record of development and our transparency is there for all to see. We are not a trigger-happy political party that provokes riots to win elections. Mr Tripathi and his political colleagues may be familiar with such practices but Trinamool is not and abhors such conduct.

Mr Tripathi is an honoured guest in West Bengal. He can be a guiding figure for our state. But he has to decide whether he is West Bengal’s elder statesman or Delhi’s Viceroy. He cannot be both. The Raj Bhawan shakha must stop.

West Bengal govt plans to enroll transgenders in civic police volunteer force

If things fall in line, members of transgender community would soon be seen donning the uniform as civic volunteers assisting the Kolkata Police in wide range of duties.

The West Bengal government has requested the Kolkata Police to recruit transgenders in the Civic Police Volunteer Force (CPVC) to end the “stigma” and “discrimination” against the community.

State minister for women and child development, Shashi Panja said she had spoken to the Kolkata Police commissioner suggesting the idea soon after it was brought up during a meeting of the West Bengal Transgender Development Board.

“The prime issue that we face is that people don’t have respect for the transgender community. But if they are incorporated as volunteers in the civic police force, then it will gradually allow people to imagine them in different roles,” she said.

The state women and child development and social welfare department has recommended that the Kolkata Police begin taking volunteers from the community and after the requisite training, indoctrinate them into the CPVC.

The state government had set up the Transgender Welfare Board in July 2014.

Shah Rukh Khan to promote Bengal as ‘sweetest’ tourist destination

Bollywood actor and brand ambassador for West Bengal, Shah Rukh Khan, will be promoting Bengal as “the sweetest tourist destination” in an ad film by the state tourism department to attract domestic and foreign travellers. He is expected to come to Kolkata for two days by the end of October for an indoor shoot.

“We have roped in superstar Shah Rukh Khan for promoting tourist destinations in the state. West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDC) has set aside Rs 8 crore for the ad film, for which we have hired the reputed agency Ogilvy & Mather for Rs 75 lakh. Darjeeling, Dooars, Bolpur and the sea-side tourist destinations would be among the touchpoints,” said state tourism minister Bratya Basu at a press conference on Wednesday.

Basu said several films of at least one-minute duration would be prepared for the campaign, with the catchline ‘Experience Bengal – the sweetest part of India’.

Basu added that Shah Rukh is not charging any fees for the new ad-films. “He has said he would not take any money, but we know he is a professional actor and provisions have been made for his payment,” he said.

TMC MP and superstar of the Bengali film industry, Deepak Adhikary alias Dev, would also feature in the promotional campaign.

The minister also said the state was looking at a number of projects under the PPP model to come up with upmarket as well as budget hotels and resorts at tourist destinations.

“At Gajoldoba in Jalpaiguri district, Sterling Holiday and Resort Ltd would build a star category eco-resort while Seal Tea Export Pvt Ltd and Gangadhar Developer Pvt Ltd would put up budget category eco-resorts. Shikaria Infra Project Pvt Ltd will also build a resort on PPP model over 75 acre at Sabuj Dweep in Hooghly district. Techno India Group would build a budget category resort at Jharkhali in South-24 Parganas,” he said.

No major hike in power tariff in last four years: Power Minister

Denying the opposition Left Front’s charges of exorbitant hike in power tariff, West Bengal Power Minister Manish Gupta on Wednesday said there has been no major hike under current regime.

Replying to a question in the assembly, Gupta presented figures of hike in power tariff during the last four years of erstwhile Left regime and four-and-half years of TMC and said that the hike during the LF rule was much higher.

“There has been nominal hike during the TMC rule. The hike during the four years of Left rule was much higher,” Gupta said.

Replying to allegations of the Opposition, Gupta said, “In Delhi there are multiple parties which provide electricity. In Mumbai there are two private parties. But if you compare the tariff of these companies with CESC, you will see the rate of CESC is much lower.
