Fact-finding team stands beside victims of post-poll violence

Allegations of attacks on workers and supporters of Trinamool Congress have been emerging from different parts of Bengal since the night of the Assembly election results on May 4.
Party Chairperson Mamata Banerjee and National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee have assured those affected that the party is fully with them in their hour of distress. The party’s top leadership has also approached the Calcutta High Court over the issue.
The party has set up three fact-finding teams to visit the districts of South 24 Parganas, Hooghly and Purba Medinipur to visit the people and places affected by the violence and prepare detailed reports. The teams began their work today (Saturday, May 16).
The party has also been posting updates on the teams’ findings on social media.
A woman Trinamool worker from South 24 Parganas alleged that when BJP-backed miscreants entered their house and vandalised it, the police were silent and instead asked the homeowners to leave the house.
Rajya Sabha MP and member of the fact-finding team for South 24 Parganas, Sushmita Dev said, “The police created conditions in favour of the BJP so that attacks could be carried out on Trinamool workers, and the Central forces assisted in this. Why have the Central forces come to Bengal? Let the people of Bengal judge after seeing all this. Around 10 workers have been brutally murdered across Bengal. We are still counting how many people have been attacked and injured, and the number has crossed three thousand.”
Meanwhile, residents of Nakunda Gram Panchayat in the Goghat Assembly constituency of Hooghly district are still living in fear. On May 9, BJP goons allegedly brutally murdered Sahadev Bag, husband of gram panchayat member China Bag, and his body was recovered from beside the local party office.
The Trinamool leader’s house was also attacked after the election results. The family members also alleged that they were assaulted by BJP workers.
The fact-finding team for Howrah visited the family today. The team included Lok Sabha MP Pratima Mondal, Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam, former minister Birbaha Hansda and Trinamool leader and Assembly election candidate Sirsanya Bandyopadhyay. The delegation spoke with the family and assured them of support.
Another team visited Moyna in Purba Medinipur. The delegation included Rajya Sabha MPs Dola Sen and Mohammad Nadimul Haque, and Sushobhan Roy. They visited the block Trinamool Congress office in Moyna and held a meeting with party workers.
After the meeting, Dola Sen alleged that atrocities are being continuously carried out against Trinamool workers and ordinary people since May 4, the day of the election results. In some places, houses were vandalised, while in others, attacks on party offices were reported. She said that all the information collected by the delegation would be conveyed to the Trinamool supremo. At the same time, these details would also be presented before the administration and the courts.
Dola Sen further claimed that allegations of EVM tampering had surfaced at various booths and counting centres. In some places, VVPAT counting was allegedly not allowed, while in others, workers were allegedly beaten and driven out. She stated that the delegation has documented all the complaints and information.
