They want to kill me. Let them do it. My dead body will be carried out of here: Abhishek Banerjee
On Saturday, May 30, All India Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Leader of the Party in Lok Sabha, Abhishek Banerjee was subjected to a brutal attack while on his way to visit the family of a party worker in Sonarpur who was killed in violence following the May 4 Assembly election results.
When he got out of his car near Kamalgazi and tried to proceed to his destination on a motorcycle, he was again attacked by BJP workers.
After meeting the family of the slain Trinamool worker Sanju Karmakar, Abhishek, speaking to reporters at the house, said, “This is what a double engine government does. Everyone wanted a double engine government.
“They want to kill me. Let them do it. My dead body will be carried out of here. My head was saved only because I was wearing a helmet. My head would have been split in two today. Two or three female colleagues came with me. They are being kicked and thrown onto the street.
“Is this the culture of Bengalis? One of my party’s workers has been killed. Can I not go and meet the family? I’ve had seven operations in my eyes. They’ve been throwing bricks and stones. Look at my glasses.
“If the BJP is not involved, then why is it not acting? There are no police anywhere. The entire incident has been recorded on video. Let someone call the police.
“I can leave this place if I want to, but the family will be attacked after that. So, I cannot leave them now. Security must be ensured first by sending in the forces.
“I will also go to the High Court and the Supreme Court over this incident. I am trying to draw the attention of the High Court and the Governor. They are trying to break down the door (of the slain Trinamool worker). There are no police here. I have asked for the SP and the IC to be informed. No forces have arrived yet.”
Condemning the incident on social media, the party stated:

A Govt that cannot guarantee the safety of Opposition leaders has serious questions to answer about its commitment to democracy, political tolerance and the rule of law.
Trinamool Congress Chairperson Mamata Banerjee, too, posted on social media strongly condemning the incident. “RULERS BECAME KILLERS- shame on you BJP,” she wrote.
