Shanta Chhetri speaks on the need for utilising the talent of the elderly generation for welfare schemes

FULL TRANSCRIPT
Thank you Sir, for allowing me to speak. I would like to draw the kind attention of this August House that our country’s elderly population amounts to 8.5 percent of the total population of the country. According to a 2016 report by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, India has 103.9 million senior citizens; people above 60 years of age.
This significant population is a reservoir of experience, a storehouse of knowledge and after retirement they have practically nothing to do. Their huge experience, talent and knowledge are literally going down the drain.
I would like to draw the kind attention of our Hon’ble Prime Minister to utilise the talent of our elderly population in welfare schemes such as imparting education, help the young with their experience and knowledge and create an interactive platform where the old can meet the young, otherwise experience and knowledge is being wasted. This will help build more care, love and respect of our elderly .
Thank you Sir.
