Derek O’Brien’s intervention on Land Acquisition Ordinance | Transcript

Full transcript:

I have two quick points to make, both related to ordinances. I do not want to discuss the merits of the Bill, the Leader of the House has given information and it is selective information. He has told us how many ordinances passed during the Congress regime, how many ordinances passed in the last 50 years, here is a limited point.

My point is let us look at the last eight months and put a ratio as to how many Bills have been passed and how many ordinances have been introduced. If you consider post independence, about 10 to 15 ordinances. In the last nine months this Government has made a record for passing the least number of bills compared to ordinances. So the Leader of the House is giving us selective information by taking a 60 year period, which is incorrect.

Secondly, the Leader of the House is much more senior to me, much more articulate than me and I will not make cheap shots by using my time to try and give advertising slogans for his bills, I will not do that. I will restrain myself because as Trinamool Congress we were the only party against the UPA Ordinance. At that time they were the devils but they are looking like angels now. We were the only party opposed to the UPA II Bills. Earlier Parliament followed 3 Ds – Deliberate, Debate, Decide. Now only the Government decides.

Thank You.

WB CM expresses concern on rising incidents of Swine flu

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today expressed concern over the increasing rates of swine flu in the country.

The CM today expressed distress over the matter saying:

“The incidents of Swine Flu have been on the increase. Certain diseases become a matter of concern. But instead of getting panicky, we must work together to widely spread awareness about the do’s and don’ts to prevent it as much as possible.

As of now, 833 deaths have taken place due to Swine Flu this year in the entire country of which, the number of deaths are 214 in Rajasthan, 207 in Gujarat, 112 in Madhya Pradesh, 99 in Maharashtra, 51 in Telengana, 33 in Karnataka, 20 in Haryana, 10 in Andhra Pradesh, 8 in Delhi, etc.

Despite all our efforts and making available necessary medicines, 5 unfortunate deaths, including 1 patient from Mumbai, have taken place in our State so far.

It is time for the Central Government, State Governments and NGOs to work together to take all necessary remedial measures.”

The CM also expressed concern on the same matter over Twitter.

Mamatabala Thakur takes oath as MP in Lok Sabha

Mamatabala Thakur, who recently won from Bongaon constituency, took oath today as Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.

12 out of the 34 newly-elected Trinamool MPs in Lok Sabha are women; this constitutes about 35.2% of TMC MPs. Thus, Trinamool Congress is the only political party which has acted  for the empowerment of women in the country.

Trinamool Congress has the highest percentage of women MPs in the house. The 16th Lok Sabha has only 65 women members which is around 11% of total.

While others only talk of women empowerment, Trinamool’s actions speak louder than words.
