40 mobile vans to keep eye on overspeeding on highways
Forty mobile surveillance vans have been introduced by the State Government to check overspeeding of vehicles on highways.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the state Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister and senior administrative and police personnel flagged off the 40 vans in a programme outside the State secretariat, Nabanna.
The surveillance vans are fitted with cameras which are capable of capturing registration numbers of vehicles. The vehicles will keep moving on major roads, mainly the highways, and the cameras will capture registration numbers of overspeeding vehicles.
The vans are also fitted with electronic display boards, using which awareness on traffic norms will be spread.
The details of the vehicles, along with their registration numbers, will soon be passed on to the police personnel posted at the nearest checking points. They will help in carrying out on-the-spot prosecutions for flouting traffic norms.
It may be mentioned that the State Government has already taken several steps to check road accidents. The chief minister had launched the statewide Safe Drive Save Life campaign that has helped to bring down the number of road accidents.
Watchtowers have been set up along highways, that have helped in maintaining vigil on the movement of vehicles. Road signs installed have helped in preventing road accidents.
Now, the mobile surveillance vans will also help in checking overspeeding of vehicles, which often leads to accidents, as well as building awareness using the display boards fitted on to them.
