Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while inaugurating Joydeb Mela in Bardhaman district today, came down hard on the Centre for the loss that demonetisation has caused to farmers, small traders, tea garden and jute industry workers.
“People are unable to withdraw their own money from banks. Small traders have been badly hit. Farmers do not have money to buy seeds. Tea gardens, the jute industry, small-scale enterprises have suffered. People are not getting pension,” she said while pointing out a survey report which say 30% people have lost their jobs due to demonetisation.
“People are suffering. Workers under the 100 Days’ Work Scheme are not receiving wages. Banks do not have money”, the Chief Minsiter said, and on top of that, “92% rural areas do not even have banks”.
She accused the Prime Minister of peddling plastic currency: “Modi Babu has become a salesman of plastic currency”. But only a very small percentage of people possess cards, and not all shops accept cards: “Will people eat plastic?”
She said, “Tughlaqi decisions have crippled the economy. I have seen many governments at Centre but never seen a Tughlaqi government like this”.
“120 people have lost their lives. Will Modi Babu take responsibility?” the CM asked.
She also harped on the vindictive attitude of the Central Government: “Anyone who speaks out against the Centre is branded corrupt and agencies are sent after them”.
She “urged everyone to come forward and protest”. “Let there be a tide of protests”, she said.
Mamata Banerjee ended her speech with a rallying cry: “We were with the people. We are with the people. We will stay beside the people”.

আজ বীরভূম জেলার কেন্দুলিতে জয়দেব মেলার উদ্বোধন করতে গিয়ে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় নোট বাতিল ইস্যুতে কেন্দ্রকে বিঁধলেন।
তিনি বলেন, দেশে ৯২শতাংশ গ্রামে ব্যাঙ্ক বা পোস্ট অফিস নেই, এই সিদ্ধান্তের ফলে মানুষ চরম ভোগান্তির শিকার, ছোট ব্যবসায়ীরা ভীষণভাবে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত। চা বাগান, জুট মিল থেকে শুরু করে ছোট কলকারখানা বন্ধ হয়ে যাচ্ছে। কৃষকদের কাছে ফসলের বীজ কেনার টাকা নেই, ৩০% মানুষ কর্মহীন হয়ে পড়েছে, ১০০ দিনের শ্রমিকরা মজুরি পাচ্ছেন না।
পাশাপাশি তিনি বলেন, যেখানে ব্যাঙ্ক আছে সেখানেও মানুষ ব্যাঙ্ক থেকে নিজেদের টাকা তুলতে পারছে না, বয়স্ক মানুষরা পেনশন পাচ্ছেন না। কারন কোনও বাঙ্কের কাছেই টাকা নেই। তিনি আরও বলেন, মোদীবাবু প্লাস্টিক টাকার সেলসম্যান হয়েছেন। মানুষ কি প্লাস্টিক খাবে?
নোট বাতিলের ফলে ব্যাংকের লাইনে দাড়িয়ে যে ১২০ জন মানুষ প্রাণ হারিয়েছেন তাদের কথা স্মরণ করে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী বলেন, মোদী বাবু কি এতজন মানুষের মৃত্যুর দায় নেবেন?
তিনি বলেন, মানুষের কাছে টাকা নেই। সাধারণ মানুষের সাদা টাকা এখন কালো হয়ে গেছে আর বিজেপির কালো টাকা সাদা হয়ে গেছে। এই সরকার মানুষের থেকে কর সংগ্রহ করে এখন মানুষকেই চোর বলছে।
মুখ্যমন্ত্রী বলেন, আমি অনেক সরকার দেখেছি কিন্তু এরকম তুঘলকি সরকার কখনোও দেখিনি, এই তুঘলকি শাসকদের তুঘলকি সিদ্ধান্ত দেশের অর্থনীতির মেরুদণ্ড ভেঙে দিয়েছে। কেন্দ্রের বিরুদ্ধে যেই মুখ খুলছে তার পিছনে এজেন্সি লাগিয়ে দিচ্ছে।
তিনি সকলকে আবেদন জানান প্রতিবাদে এগিয়ে আসার জন্য। তিনি বলেন, আমরা মানুষের পাশে আছি, মানুষের পাশে থাকব। বাংলাকে আমাদের এগিয়ে নিয়ে যেতে হবে।”
