In a statement on Twitter today, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the replacement of the picture of the ‘Father of the Nation’, Mahatma Gandhi and the symbol charkha with the Prime Minister’s picture in the 2017 wall calendar and table diary published by the Khadi Village Industries Commission (KVIC).
She wrote: “The great symbol of charka and Mahatma Gandhi now gets replaced by Modi babu”.
She went on to write: “In the calendar and diary of Khadi (KVIC) 2017 Modi replaced Mahatma Gandhi ji. Gandhiji is the Father of the Nation. Modi ji what???”

Pilgrims who have arrived in Sagar Island to take a holy dip in the confluence of river Ganga expressed their satisfaction with the arrangement made by the state government.
The state government made an elaborate arrangement to help the pilgrims reach their destination and return safely without facing any trouble. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a review meeting on January 5 over the preparation for Ganga Sagar Mela where more than 14 lakh pilgrims visit every year.
Subrata Mukehrjee, the state PHE minister, and Sobhandeb Chatterjee, the state Power minister, had visited the Sagar Island to take a stock of the preparation of the mela. The state PHE department is the nodal agency to organise the mela, but many departments had worked together to ensure that pilgrims could safely reach the venue.
The Transport department had ensured additional bus services both in the mainland and the island. There are more buses this time to take people from the transit points in Sagar Island to the mela ground.
Thousands of civil volunteers, all local youth, have been deployed in the mela to keep the area clean. They will ask people to avoid open defecation. Their main task would be to keep the mela premises clean. Steps have also been taken to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the mela premises.
প্রতি বছরের মত এবছরও গঙ্গাসাগরের পুন্যার্থীদের নিরাপত্তার জন্য সবরকম ব্যবস্থা করেছে রাজ্য সরকার। গত ৫ জানুয়ারি মাননীয়া মুখ্যমন্ত্রী গঙ্গাসাগর মেলা নিয়ে একটি বৈঠক করেন, যেখানে প্রায় প্রতি বছর ১৪ লক্ষ পুন্যার্থীর সমাগম হয়।
সাধারণ মানুষের নিরাপত্তার জন্য গোটা এলাকা সিসিটিভি দিয়ে মুড়ে ফেলা হয়েছে।
পঞ্চায়েত মন্ত্রী সুব্রত মুখোপাধ্যায় এবং বিদ্যু९ মন্ত্রী শোভনদেব চট্টোপাধ্যায় মেলার প্রস্তুতি খতিয়ে দেখার জন্য গঙ্গাসাগর পরিদর্শনে গিয়েছিলেন। রাজ্য জনস্বাস্থ্য কারিগরি বিভাগ এই মেলার আয়োজন করে। তবে পুন্যার্থীরা যাতে নিরাপদে পৌঁছতে পারে এবং সেখানে তাদের নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য অনেক বিভাগ একসঙ্গে কাজ করেছে।
ট্রানজিট পয়েন্ট থেকে সাগর মেলায় মানুষকে পৌঁছে দেওয়ার জন্য পরিবহন দপ্তর অতিরিক্ত বাস পরিষেবা চালু করেছে।
মেলা প্রাঙ্গন পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্ন রাখার জন্য হাজার হাজার সিভিল ভলেন্টিয়ার, স্থানীয় যুবকদের মেলায় মোতায়েন করা হয়েছে। বিপর্যয় মোকাবিলা দল ও ডুবুরিও রাখা হয়েছে। এবার ১০ হাজার অতিরিক্ত শৌচাগার তৈরি করা হয়েছে। কি কি করণীয় ও কি কি করণীয় নয় এমন নির্দেশিকা সম্বলিত বিভিন্ন ভাষার লিফলেট বিলি করছে প্রশাসন। এছাড়াও মেলা প্রাঙ্গণে নিরবচ্ছিন্ন বিদ্যু९ সরবরাহ নিশ্চিত করার ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়েছে।
Kolkata will soon boast of having women taxi drivers as the Bengal government has devised a two-pronged strategy to bring them on the driver’s seat – training for drivers and training to defend themselves in case of a sudden attack. The entire programme is targeted to provide financial relief to women from financially weaker strata of society.
The project is being jointly coordinated by an NGO and the state government’s Woman and Child Development and Social Welfare department.
“A few women have been selected for the purpose,” the minister said, adding the training was being provided an NGO. The educational qualification has been fixed at either eighth standard or matriculation.
“There has been a growing demand for women drivers. Of late, there is an increase in demand for women cab drivers in the state,” the Minister said. The minister said the government would get in touch with private cab service companies also to hire trained women drivers.
রাজ্য সরকারের উদ্যোগে খুব শিগগিরি কলকাতার রাস্তায় দেখা যাবে মহিলা ট্যাক্সিচালক। মহিলাদের গাড়ি চালানো সেখানোর পাশাপাশি তাদের আত্মরক্ষার প্রশিক্ষণও দেওয়া হবে। অর্থনৈতিকভাবে সমাজের পিছিয়ে পড়া শ্রেণীর মহিলাদের স্বাবলম্বী করতেই মুলত এই উদ্যোগ নিয়েছেন রাজ্য সরকার।
একটি সেচ্ছাসেবী সংস্থা ও রাজ্য সরকারের নারী, শিশু ও সমাজ কল্যান দপ্তর যৌথভাবে এই উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে।
রাজ্যের নারী কল্যাণ মন্ত্রী বলেন, কিছু মহিলাকে এই প্রকল্পের জন্য বেছে নেওয়া হয়েছে। শিক্ষাগত যোগ্যতা হিসেবে ম্যাট্রিক বা অষ্টম শ্রেণী উত্তীর্ণ ধার্য করা হয়েছে।
মন্ত্রী বলেন, “মহিলা ট্যাক্সিচালকের চাহিদা ইদানিং বেড়েছে।” তিনি আরও বলেন, সরকার বেসরকারি ট্যাক্সি পরিষেবা প্রদানকারী সংস্থাগুলোর সঙ্গেও কথা বলবে মহিলা ট্যাক্সিচালকদের সুযোগ দেওয়ার জন্য।
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the 21st edition of ‘Jatra Utsav’ today. The inaugural ceremony was held at Kachhari Maidan, Barasat. The 32 day-long festival will be held in Barasat on January 13 and 14 and then from January 15 till February 13 in Baghbazar.
The Bengal Government, under the initiative of the Chief Minister has been instrumental in providing jatra artistes with several facilities including bringing them under mediclaim.
Setting up of a data bank on jatra is also under process. The Government had also increased the annual remuneration of poor jatra artistes from to Rs 9,000, from Rs 8,000, in 2015.
The State Government has come up with ‘Jatra Darpan’ – a booklet containing information on jatra groups – and has given a copy to all district magistrates and superintendents of police in the districts in an effort to rejuvenate the jatra culture in the State.

আজ একুশতম যাত্রা উ९সবের সূচনা করলেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। বারাসাতের কাছারি ময়দানে হয় এই উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠান।
৩২ দিন ব্যাপী এই অনুষ্ঠানটি প্রথমে ১৩-১৪ জানুয়ারী বারাসাতে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে। তারপর, ১৫ জানুয়ারী থেকে ১৩ ফেব্রুয়ারী বাগবাজারে চলবে যাত্রা উ९সব।
মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর অনুপ্রেরণায় যাত্রা শিল্পীদের কল্যানে নানা প্রকল্প গ্রহণ করেছে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার। স্বাস্থ্যবীমার ব্যবস্থাও করা হবে তাদের জন্য। একটি যাত্রা ডাটা ব্যাংক তৈরিরও কাজ চলছে। ২০১৫ সাল থেকে রাজ্য সরকার গরিব যাত্রা শিল্পীদের বার্ষিক ভাতা ৮০০০ থেকে বাড়িয়ে ৯০০০ করে দিয়েছে।
যাত্রা শিল্পের পুনরুদ্ধারের জন্য রাজ্য সরকার ‘যাত্রা দর্পন’ নামক একটি পুস্তিকাও তৈরী করেছে। নোট বাতিলের ফলে যাত্রা শিল্পীরা চরম সমস্যার সম্মুখীন এদিন সভামঞ্চ থেকে সেকথাও উল্লেখ করেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী।

Bengal Fisheries Department has taken a novel initiative through which ‘Fish Meal’ will be made available to the public at just Rs 21. In general, Bengalis prefer fish, which is rich in nutrients.
The Annapurna Thali, as it has been named will have fish curry with a piece of fish weighing 50 gms, 100 gms of rice and 75 gms of lentil dal and 50 gms of vegetable curry, prices at RS 21. ‘Ben Fish’ vehicles will be selling the fish thalis at important junctions around the city and districts. The thalis will be jacketed and covered and the food quality will be of high standard.
The Fisheries department had conducted a trial run which had been successful. Now, the project will be launched from February, 2017 with 21 ‘Ben Fish’ vehicles.

মাত্র একুশ টাকায় মিলবে ডাল, ভাত, তরকারি, মাছ৷ শুধু কলকাতা শহরই নয়, জেলায় জেলায় ম९স্য দপ্তরের এই নয়া প্রকল্পের সুবিধা মিলবে। রাজ্যের ম९স্য দপ্তরের নয়া এই প্রকল্প সাধারণের মনও কেড়েছে। একুশ টাকায় মিলবে ৫০ গ্রাম ওজনের একটি মাছ, ১০০ গ্রাম ভাত, ৭৫ গ্রাম মুসুর ডাল ও ৫০ গ্রাম সবজি৷
ডালহৌসি, ধর্মতলা, গড়িয়া সহ শহরের একাধিক জায়গায় ঘুরবে বেনফিশের এই ‘অন্নপূর্ণা’ গাড়ি৷ দুপুর ১২টা থেকে ৩টে পর্যন্ত এই গাড়ির সামনে দাঁড়ালেই মিলবে খাবার৷ আগামী তিন মাসের মধ্যে একুশটা গাড়ি চলবে শহরে ও জেলায়৷ ধীরে ধীরে বাড়ানো হবে গাড়ির সংখ্যা৷ ছ মাসের মধ্যে শহরে ও জেলায় পঞ্চাশটি অন্নপূর্ণা গাড়ি নামাতে চলেছে ম९স্য দপ্তর৷
হিন্দুমতে ঘরের খাবার যোগান দেন দেবী অন্নপূর্ণা তাই নাম রাখা হয়েছে ‘একুশে অন্নপূর্ণা’। কাগজের প্যাকেটে থাকবে খাবার৷ তা ঢাকা থাকবে একটি প্লাস্টিক জ্যাকেট দিয়ে৷ কম টাকায় খাবার মিললেও গুণমানের দিকেও বিশেষ নজর দিচ্ছেন ম९স্য দপ্তরের আধিকারিকরা৷
ম९স্য দপ্তর সূত্রে খবর, আপাতত বেশ কয়েকটি জায়গায় এই প্রকল্পের ট্রায়াল রান দেওয়া হয়েছে৷ সেখানে যাঁরা এই খাবার খেয়েছেন, তাঁরা প্রশংসা করেছেন৷ ম९স্য মন্ত্রী চন্দ্রনাথ সিনহা জানিয়েছেন, “মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় রাজ্যের প্রতিটি মানুষের কাছে খাবার পৌঁছে দেওয়ার কথা বারবার বলেন৷ ইতিমধ্যেই দু’টাকা কিলো দরে চাল দিচ্ছে রাজ্য সরকার৷ এবার তাই ম९স্য দপ্তর মানুষের কাছে সস্তায় পুষ্টিকর খাদ্য পৌঁছে দিতে চায়৷ তার জন্যই শুরু হচ্ছে ‘একুশে অন্নপূর্ণা’ প্রকল্প৷”
Within two days after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that Mishti Hub in Burdwan will be inaugurated in the next two months, traders have started receiving orders for traditional sweets which will be prepared in the under-construction hub.
On January 9, the Chief Minister announced that the proposed Mishti Hub will be inaugurated on March 14. She made the announcement from the inaugural ceremony of Mati Utsav.
The decision to set up the hub was taken considering the business potential of the locally made traditional sweets and it was decided to sell the sweets in small packets in all the outlets of Biswa Bangla. She had also announced that the same sweets will be marketed abroad.

কয়েকদিন আগে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী ঘোষণা করেন যে আগামী দুমাসের মধ্যে উদ্বোধন হবে বর্ধমানের মিষ্টি হাবের। মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর ঘোষণার দুদিনের মধ্যে কারিগররা মিষ্টি তৈরির অর্ডার পেতে শুরু করেছেন।
গত ৯ জানুয়ারি মাটি উৎসবের অনুষ্ঠান থেকে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী ঘোষণা করেন আগামী ১৪ তারিখ ‘মিষ্টি হাব’ এর উদ্বোধন হবে।
বাংলার জনপ্রিয় মিষ্টিগুলোই এখানে তৈরি হবে।বিশ্ব বাংলা স্টলগুলিতে প্যাকেটে করে এই মিষ্টি বিক্রি হবে। একইসঙ্গে তিনি ঘোষণা করেন যে একই মিষ্টি বিদেশেও বাজারজাত করা হবে।
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today accused him of “removing crucial files” related to the notes ban. She also alleged that demonetisation was a “ploy to transform white money into black and black money into white”.
“They (Modi government) have turned the CBI into the Conspiracy Bureau of India and are using it for pursuing vendetta politics. The CBI has created a back office to come up with false evidence against our leaders to implicate them in chit fund cases,” she alleged.
Mamata Banerjee alleged that the CPI(M) had entered into a “political match-fixing” with the BJP as it was “under the Left rule that the chit funds had mushroomed in the state”.
“It was during the CPI(M) regime that Rose Valley and Saradha chit funds came into being. What were the SEBI and RBI doing then? Several top CPI(M) leaders were involved in the chit fund business but none of them was summoned. It only shows that the CPI(M) and the BJP have teamed up in Bengal,” she said.
নোট বাতিল সংক্রান্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সব ফাইল সরিয়ে ফেলা হয়েছে বলে এদিন অভিযোগ করেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। তাঁর অভিযোগ নোট বাতিল সাদা টাকাকে কালো টাকায় রুপান্তরিত করার এক কৌশল।
তিনি বলেন, “ওরা সিবিআই কে কন্সপিরেসি ব্যুরো অফ ইন্ডিয়ায় পরিণত করে তা রাজনৈতিক প্রতিহিংসা চরিতার্থ করার কাজে লাগাচ্ছে। একটা ব্যাক অফিস তৈরি করেছে সেখানে আমাদের নেতাদের বিরুদ্ধে মিথ্যে অভিযোগের প্রমাণ তৈরি করছে”।
সিপিএমএর সঙ্গে বিজেপির ম্যাচ ফিক্সিং হয়েছে। বাম আমলে রাজ্যে যখন চিট ফান্দ তৈরি হয়েছিল তখন ওরা কি করছিল?কেন পদক্ষেপ নেয়নি এই প্রশ্নও তুলেছেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী।
তিনি আরও বলেন, “রোজ ভ্যালি, সারদা তৈরি হয়েছে সিপিএমের আমলে। সেই সময় আরবিআই, সেবি কেন চিট ফাণ্ড ব্যবসা করতে দিয়েছিল? অনেক সিপিএম নেতা এই চিট ফান্ডের সঙ্গে জড়িত। তাদের কেন তলব করা হচ্ছে না? এর থেকেই স্পষ্ট সিপিএম-বিজেপি বাংলায় একজোট হয়েছে”।
Coming down heavily on the Centre on the issue of demonetisation and political vendetta, Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee today said everyone is suffering due to ‘Super Emergency’.
“Modi Babu bulldozed his decision. Institutions were not allowed to do their job. Whoever is speaking up is being silenced with fear-mongering. Agencies are hounding them,” she said.
“Within hours of announcement of demonetisation I raised my voice. Why did they introduce Rs 2000 notes after banning Rs 1000? People will ban Modi Sarkar soon,” the CM added.
She thundered, “They promised situation will normalise within 50 days. Nothing has improved. Are 50 days not over? Why are restrictions on withdrawal limit still in place?”
She said Trinamool cannot be scared by fear-mongering tactics. “They thought TMC is made of soft mud so even rats can dig it. We fight with tigers, we won’t get rattled by a push from rats,” the Chief Minister said.
She reiterated that CBI has become ‘Conspiracy Bureau of India’.
Highlighting the sufferings of people across all strata of society, she said the protests will continue and the next course of action will be decided after Gangasagar Mela.
Meeting the President for the third time since demonetisation, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs accused the Modi government of having imposed a “super emergency” by launching the exercise and engaging in “vendetta politics” by arresting two party lawmakers after it opposed the “draconian” move.
Speaking to reporters after marching from South Avenue to Rashtrapati Bhawan to protest against the note ban, the MPs also held Prime Minister Narendra Modi responsible for the death of 120 people, caused allegedly by the move, and sought President Pranab Mukherjee’s intervention as the situation had turned “grim”.
The 30-member delegation, comprising MPs Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, Dola Sen, Dinesh Trivedi, Arpita Ghosh, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Sisir Adhikari among others, also submitted a memorandum to Mukherjee.
Hon’ble Rashtrapati ji,
Six days after announcing demonetisation on 8 November 2016, the Prime Minister had asked for fifty days to meet the objectives of demonetisation and end the suffering caused to ordinary citizens. The people of this country have now borne this acute crisis for over sixty days and the situation has only got progressively worse.
120 lives have reportedly been lost because of demonetisation. We are deeply pained that this Government has not as much as acknowledged the loss of these innocent lives. The brunt of these irresponsible measures is being borne by India’s least fortunate and most honourable people – farmers, textile, construction and plantation workers, small business owners, trading communities, fishermen, housewives, students and large sections of the middle class.
In spite of a good monsoon, farmers were prevented from purchasing seeds and necessary inputs at the peak of the rabi sowing season. Food shortages and rural distress are looming large on the horizon. Everyday we are witnessing cash-starved farmers making distress sales or even throwing away perishable produce.
As you are aware, only 7% of India’s workforce is employed in the organized sector. Demonetisation has impoverished a vast majority of the 415 million workers who earn a daily wage through agriculture, construction, small-scale manufacturing and retail. Over 25 crores daily-wage workers have suffered loss of work. Micro and small-scale industries are reporting 35% job losses and 50% decline in revenue. As factories have shut, workers are returning to their villages in an unprecedented reverse migration. If restrictions on cash withdrawal are not removed immediately, job losses will increase manifold in the coming months.
We find it alarming that people’s right to withdraw their own money has been suspended indefinitely. Despite repeated requests, the Government has shared no timeline for the removal of restrictions on cash withdrawals. As the restrictions continue to be in effect, honest and upright citizens of this country are being prohibited from accessing their hard-earned money. Propriety demands that the Government explain under which provisions of law these restrictions on withdrawals have been imposed.
From the day of the draconian announcement of demonetisation and throughout this ill-conceived and poorly implemented exercise, this Government has served to deceive and ambush its own citizens. New and inconsistent notifications have been issued almost everyday, withdrawal limits and deposit deadlines altered with no prior notice, and financial incentives for digital transactions roll-backed at whim. Arbitrary and irresponsible conduct of this nature has shaken the people’s trust in the government irrevocably.
It is appalling that this Government has resorted to the politics of vendetta to conceal its own incompetence and inefficiency. Anyone who has opposed demonetisation has been branded anti-national, corrupt, a supporter of terrorism or a hoarder of black money. The Government is blatantly misusing power and using state agencies to stifle opposition and silence critics. This deplorable and vindictive politics dishonours the sacred principles of our constitutional democracy and is detrimental to national interest.
Sir, as the custodian of the Constitution of our country, we appeal to you to intervene to take care of our people and save them from harm. We look to you, Sir, to bring an end to this unprecedented super-emergency.
