Intervention by Parliamentary Party Leader in Rajya Sabha Derek O’Brien, requesting the Chair to ask the government to urgently initiate a discussion on electoral reforms

Sir, yesterday, we had a discussion with the Leader of the House and the Parliamentary Affairs Minister. Sir, you were there and our Members from here were also present. We referred a proposal to the Government; you were there with us, Sir. Let us get into a discussion on the urgent need to discuss electoral reforms. They can do it in whichever
wording they want. Let us begin a discussion because that is the need of 15 Opposition Parties this side. Let us have a fruitful discussion on this, and let the House run. Just one minute, Sir. Sir, we gave this proposal in your presence; the Congress Party was there; the DMK was there; the Trinamool was there; all of us were there; and we agreed that
whatever the wording be on electoral reform, we can have a discussion. The Government was supposed to come back to us. Nobody has come back; but we are ready for a discussion here and now, and no one wants to disrupt this House, Sir. Sir, twelve parties are here. We want a discussion on electoral reforms. Sir, the last Session was washed out completely. There is a trust deficit. We want to be assured. Sir, very humbly, we say, we want the Parliament to run. Why does the Government not want a discussion when everybody here wants a discussion?
