West Bengal’s Rural Craft Hub project reaches out to the world
The Rural Craft Hub, a highly successful project to enable rural crafts to find bigger markets – both national and international – for their crafts, and thus provide sustainable income to a large swathe of the population of the State, started jointly by the Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal Government and UNESCO in September 2013, is now becoming a model for other countries.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has a special interest in the project as it has been her dream to put Bengal on the world map.
Today, 14 handicraft experts from seven countries – the UK, South Korea, Norway, Canada, Thailand, Malaysia, Bahrain, Egypt – and UNESCO are meeting at a convention at Taj Bengal in Kolkata, from 10 am to 5 pm, where the West Bengal Government would share the success story of the concept of Rural Craft Hub. The hubs are being run in nine districts.
The experts would visit the hubs to take a first-hand look at the way the project has transformed the lives of artisans all over West Bengal. Artisans would be able to display their skills in crafts like sitalpati, wooden masks, clay dolls, wooden dolls, chhau masks, dokra, terracotta, kantha stitch, patachitra and madurkathi to the international experts. This kind of direct contact would encourage them further.
Earlier, Rural Craft Hub had received the rare honour of being selected by UNESCO to showcase their artistes at its headquarters in Paris July 28, 2015.
At its initiation itself, Rural Craft Hubs had benefitted 3,000 artisans. Those who have come under the project have seen their annual incomes grow three to four times. This year, 15,000 artisans would benefit from Rural Craft Hubs. In the next five years, all indigenous crafts of the State would be included in the project.
The handicrafts sector represents the economic lifeline of the vulnerable sections of society, with women accounting for around 50% of the craftspeople, and a significant number belonging to the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and religious minorities.

পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মাননীয়া মুখ্যমন্ত্রী শ্রীমতী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়এর অনুপ্রেরণায় ক্ষুদ্র, ছোট ও মাঝারি উদ্যোগ এবং বস্ত্র বিভাগ ও ইউনেস্কোর যৌথ প্রচেষ্টায় রুরাল ক্রাফট হাব প্রজেক্ট অভূতপূর্ব সাফল্য লাভ করেছে।
আজ বিশ্বের চোখে বাংলার হস্তশিল্পীদের কাজ প্রদর্শিত হবে। ইউনেস্কোর সাথে আন্তর্জাতিক বিশেষজ্ঞরা পর্যালোচনা করবেন। ইউকে, দক্ষিণ কোরিয়া, নরওয়ে, কানাডা, থাইল্যান্ড, মালয়েশিয়া, বাহরিন, মিশর ও ইউনেস্কোর প্রতিনিধিরা উপস্থিত থাকবেন।
রুরাল ক্রাফট হাব প্রজেক্ট পশ্চিমবঙ্গের ৯টি জেলায় চলবে। এর মাধ্যমে প্রায় ৩০০০ হস্তশিল্পী উপকৃত হয়েছেন। তাদের বারশিক আয় তিন থেকে চার গুন বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে।
এর আগে ২০১৫ সালের ২৮শে জুলাই পশ্চিমবঙ্গের রুরাল ক্রাফট হাব প্রজেক্ট হস্তশিল্পী কারিগরদের কারুকার্যের জন্য বিশেষ সম্মান পেয়েছে।
এবছর প্রায় ১৫০০০ হস্তশিল্পী এই প্রকল্পের আওতায় আসবেন। আগামী ৫ বছরে বাংলার সমস্ত হস্তশিল্পী রুরাল ক্রাফট হাব এর সাহায্যে সমৃদ্ধ হবেন।
শীতলপাটি, মাটির পুতুল, ছৌ নাচের মুখোশ, ডোকরা, টেরাকোটা ইত্যাদি কারিগরির মাধ্যমে বাংলার হস্তশিল্পীরা তাদের দক্ষতা তুলে ধরার সুযোগ পাবেন।
বিশেষজ্ঞরা উন্নতির পরিমাপ করবেন এবং তাদের স্বীকৃতি যেমন একদিকে বিশ্ববাজারে বাংলার হস্তশিল্পকে আরও প্রসারিত করবে তেমনী শিল্পীদের নতুন আশা ও উতসাহ দেবে।
