Rural Craft Hubs of West Bengal help artisans double their incomes
Rural Craft Hubs, set up under the initiative of West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee, have helped artisans increase their incomes significantly.
Thanks to this State Government initiative, the average monthly incomes of artisans have almost doubled over the last year.
The average monthly income of artisans of West Medinipur, which is famous for patachitra, now stands at Rs 10,000, against Rs 4,000 in 2014. Dokra artisans of Bardhaman district took home Rs 4,140 a month on an average, against only Rs 2,300 in 2014. Dokra artisans of Bankura too doubled their income from the Rs 4,000 they drew every month in 2014.
In September 2013, the Department of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises and Textiles and UNESCO had taken up a joint initiative of developing 10 Rural Craft Hubs at 11 locations in nine districts; they now employ 3,000 rural handicraft artists.
Rural Craft Hub of West Bengal has received international recognition as well. It was selected by UNESCO to showcase the artwork of West Bengal, at its headquarters in Paris on July 28, 2015.
Now there is more good news for artisans. Apart from the existing sitalpati, clay doll making, kantha stitching and terracotta art, five more arts are going to be added to the list. The first in the new series would be the masks of Bengal, under the Biswa Bangla initiative. There would be 15 kinds of masks from different parts of West Bengal, all with a history and story of its own, including rabankata mask, chhau dance mask of Purulia, gilded masks of Kushmundi and masks of bagpa dance.
The Rural Craft Hubs have been a significant contributor in building capacity, creating direct market linkage, creating exposure for rural artisans to national and international markets and, in the process, helping them getting rid of middlemen, making the villages cultural destinations, and strengthening grassroots entrepreneurship.

পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মাননীয়া মুখ্যমন্ত্রী শ্রীমতী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের অনুপ্রেরণায় তৈরি হয়েছে রুরাল ক্রাফট হাব, এর ফলে শিল্পীদের মাসিক আয় বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। গত বছরের থেকে এবছর শিল্পীদের মাসিক আয় প্রায় দ্বিগুন হয়ে গেছে।
পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুরের পটশিল্পীদের বর্তমান মাসিক আয় ১০০০০ টাকা, ২০১৪ সালে এর পরিমাণ ছিল ৪০০০ টাকা। বর্ধমানের ডোকরা শিল্পীদের মাসিক আয় এখন ৪,১৪০ টাকা, ২০১৪ এ ছিল ২,৩০০ টাকা। বাঁকুড়ার ডোকরা শিল্পীদের মাসিক আয়ও ২০১৪ সালের তুলনায় বেড়ে দ্বিগুন হয়ে গেছে।
২০১৩ সালের সেপ্টেম্বর মাসে ৯টি জেলায় ১০টি রুরাল ক্রাফট হাব তৈরি করেছে ক্ষুদ্র ও কুটির শিল্প দপ্তর এবং UNESCO। সেখানে ৩০০০ গ্রামীণ হস্তশিল্পি কারিগরকে চাকরি দেওয়া হয়েছে।
পশ্চিমবঙ্গের রুরাল ক্রাফট হাব আন্তর্জাতিক স্বীকৃতি পেয়েছে।
আরও কিছু সুখবর আছে শিল্পীদের জন্য। শীতলপাটি, পুতুল তৈরি, কাঁথা সেলাই, টেরাকোটা ছাড়াও আরও ৫টি শিল্প যুক্ত হতে চলছে এই তালিকায়। বিশ্ব বাংলার উদ্যোগে প্রথমে তৈরি হবে মুখোশ। ১৫ রকমের মুখোশ তৈরি হবে, এর মধ্যে পুরুলিয়ার ছৌ নাচের মুখোশ, কুশমুণ্ডির সোনালি মুখোশ ছাড়াও বাগপা নাচের মুখোশও তৈরি হবে।
