In Conversation With Chandrima Bhattacharya
As the president of Mahila Trinamool Congress, are you taking any special initiatives to increase the mass outreach of the party?
The main focus in reaching out to people is taking the message of the government to the common man. The various developmental works that are done by the government led by Mamata Banerjee have to be communicated to people. From leaflet distribution to organising rallies or street corner meetings, we generally take up various programmes to make our point to people. Apart from being associated with the main party`s programmes, the women`s wing also organises many activities on its own.
How do you plan to counter the various claims made by different media houses and certain sections of society regarding the lack of safety of women in the state?
We do not need to counter anyone. It is a fact that women`s safety had reached a nadir during the 34 year long Left rule; the fact is validated by the huge support from women that led to the change of regime (Poriborton) in 2011. Women voted in large numbers and helped in the victory of Trinamool Congress. It is because of the active participation of women that a regime change took place.
Mamata Banerjee-led government has the full support of the women in West Bengal. Women have got their right to protest under the current regime. They could even lodge complaints during the Left era. But things have changed now. No complaints could be lodged against CPM cadre during the 34 year long rule. Women lived in fear, but now the situation is changed. More number of cases are being registered now compared to the past. Cases are solved on a fast-track basis.
There are so many glaring examples of crimes against women in the past – Bantala, Dhantala, Sutia, Ghokshadanga, Debra, Basanti, from Felani Basak to Anita Dewan there are so many cases of how state failed the tortured women in the past. Now women have got their voice of protest back.
Apart from heading the women`s wing of the party, you are also the Minister of State for Health. How has been your experience for the last two and a half years?
The state did not have any infrastructure for the last 34 years in health sector. We are working hard because we have to do everything from scratch, and this is not just the case with my department; the same goes for all ministries. Our Chief Minister herself is a role model in this regard; she is hardworking and workaholic; this is worth emulating.
Health ministry is a very delicate department – health service is not something that people can go asking for with a begging bowl. It is a right that had been denied to people for three decades. Under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee many revolutionary initiatives have been taken on behalf of the Health Department. A transformational change has occurred in the sector.
Do you have any message for the party members?
Our cadre are very disciplined and organised. Had we not been a disciplined party, we would have not been able to take on the Left and usher in Poriborton. Our workers have been very patient and committed. Unlike the communists, we do not run a party-cracy. The party does not interfere in the activities of the government. The dedication of our workers in enviable; I daresay, it`s unmatched in other parties too. We have to stand together and unitedly carry on our fight. We need to carry on our duties for the party with full dedication, no matter which post we are in. Only if we perform our duties towards the party, our party will become stronger. We have to follow the directions of our Chairperson with devotion.
How are you preparing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which are just months away?
Trinamool will get a thumping mandate from the people in the Lok Sabha elections. We will have a sizeable presence in the House and Mamata Banerjee will play a key role in next government formation.

মহিলা তৃনমূল কংগ্রেসের পক্ষ থেকে জন সংযোগ বাড়াতে কি কি পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া হচ্ছে?
জনসংযোগের সবচেয়ে বড় কথাটাই হলো আমাদের সরকার যে কাজকর্মগুলি করছে সেগুলো সম্পর্কে মানুষকে অভিহিত করা। লিফলেটের মধ্য দিয়ে হোক প্রচার সভার মধ্য দিয়ে হোক, কিম্বা মিছিলের মধ্য দিয়ে হোক, এ ধরনের কাজ আমাদের ব্লকে ব্লকে হয়ে থাকে। মূল পার্টির কর্মসূচির মত, মহিলারা আলাদা করেও এইসব কর্মসূচি করে থাকে।
নারী সুরক্ষা নিয়ে অনেক মহলে নানারকম কুত্সা করা হয়েছে, সেগুলিকে কাউন্টার করার জন্যে কি প্রচেষ্টা করছেন?
কাউন্টার করার প্রয়োজন আমাদের নেই। নারীরা যে ৩৪ বছর বাম শাসনে সুরক্ষিত ছিল না, সেটা প্রমানিত হয়ে গেছিল পরিবর্তনের সময় নারীদের সর্বাধিক অংশগ্রহনে। বুথে বুথে পুরুষের চেয়ে মহিলাদের লাইন বেশি ছিল। তাদেরই মুখ্য অংশগ্রহনে মমতা বন্দোপাধ্যায়ের সরকার গঠন হয়েছে। ৩৪ বছর পর নারীরা আজ প্রতিবাদের ভাষা খুঁজে পেয়েছে। আগে কোনো ঘটনায় কোনো সিপিএম ক্যাডার জড়িত থাকলে কোনো অ্যাকশন নেয়া হতনা আজ সেই সময় পাল্টেছে।
ফেলানি বসাক থেকে অনিতা দেওয়ান – বানতলা, ধানতলা, ঘোক্সাডাঙা থেকে শুরু করে দেবরা, কত জায়গার নাম বলব? নারীরা আগে সুরক্ষিত ছিলনা, আজ তারা কমপ্লেইন করতে পারছে। তাদের কমপ্লেইন রেজিস্টার করা হচ্ছে, মামলার দ্রুত নিস্পত্তিও হচ্ছে।
আড়াই বছর ধরে আপনি রাজ্যের স্বাস্থ্য প্রতিমন্ত্রী – এই দায়িত্ব সামলাতে কতটা পরিশ্রম করতে হচ্ছে?
৩৪ বছরে স্বাস্থ্য পরিষেবা বলে কিছু ছিলই না। ফলে পরিশ্রম তো নিশ্চিত ভাবে সবাইকেই করতে হচ্ছে। মমতা বন্দোপাধ্যায় কর্মঠ মুখ্যমন্ত্রী, তিনি অনুকরণীয় ও অনুস্মরণীয়। তাকে পরিশ্রম করতে দেখে সকলেই নিজের দায়িত্ব যথেষ্ট গুরুত্বের সাথে সামলাতে অনুপ্রানিত হয়। সব দপ্তরের মন্ত্রিদেরই পরিশ্রম করতে হয়, যেটা তারা করছে।
স্বাস্থ্য দপ্তর ডেলিকেট একটি দপ্তর। খুব সংবেদনশীল ভাবে একে সামলাতে হয়। এটাত ভিক্ষা করে পাবার মত কিছুনা, এই পরিষেবা সাংবিধানিক অধিকারের মধ্যে পরে। মানুষ গত ৩৪ বছরে কোনো পরিষেবাই পাননি।
মাননীয়া মুখ্যমন্ত্রী যে ধরনের পদক্ষেপ স্বাস্থ্যক্ষেত্রে নিয়েছেন, এবং নিচ্ছেন ক্রমান্বয়ে, তাতে একটা ক্রান্তিকারী বদল এসছে। পরিবর্তন হয়েছে স্বাস্থ্য পরিষেবাতে।
পার্টির কর্মীদের উদ্দেশে কোনও বার্তা?
আমাদের কর্মীরা অত্যন্ত সংগঠিত, আমাদের কর্মীরা খুব ভালো। তারা যদি সংগঠিত না হত, এই পরিবর্তন করা আমাদের পক্ষে সম্ভব হতনা। দীর্ঘদিন ধরে কিছু না পেয়ে যে ভাবে লড়াই করে ঘেছে তারা, তা অবিশ্বাস্য। যে ভাবে আমাদের সরকার চলে, তাতে কিন্তু পার্টির জন্যে সরকার চলেনা। দলতন্ত্র আমাদের মধ্যে নেই। পায়ে দেবার রাজনীতির থেকে দুরে থেকেও আমাদের কর্মীরা পার্টির জন্য আপ্রাণ কাজ করে যান। ইটা অন্য কোনো পার্টিতে নেই।
সবাই মাইল আমরা সংগঠিত হয়ে, যে যেখানে আমরা যে পদেই আছি না কেন সেই কাজটা ঠিক ভাবে করে যেতে হবে। আমাদের নেত্রীর আদেশ শিরোধার্য করে আমাদের দায়িত্ব পালন করতে হবে।
আগামী লোক সভা ভোটের জন্য কিভাবে প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছেন?
আগামী লোকসভা ভোটে তৃনমূল কংগ্রেস বিপুল ভোটে জয়ী হবে, মানুষের আস্থা আমাদের সাথে আছে। নির্বাচনের পর মমতা বন্দোপাধ্যায় জাতীয় রাজনীতিতে এক নির্ণায়ক ভূমিকা পালন করবেন।
