From declassification of Netaji files to Subhas Utsab – Bangla Govt keeping the legacy of Netaji alive

On September 18, 2015, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had released all the 64 classified files related to Netaji, which were in the possession of the Kolkata Police and the West Bengal Police. The files are being kept at the Kolkata Police Museum on APC Road.

Not only that, Mamata Banerjee has been exhorting the Centre and many foreign countries as well to release all secret files related to Netaji.

The CM had also announced the State Government’s decision to digitise these files. In the future the government plans to declassify files of the post-independence era too, the chief minister had said.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose continues to inspire all of us.

On January 15, 2016, the Chief Minister had inaugurated a plaque, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the ‘Great Escape’, as the great leader’s escape in 1941 from house arrest (in Netaji Bhawan) is called, and a statue of Netaji at Netaji Bhawan.

Bangla Govt celebrating Subhas Utsab across the State

The Bangla Government is celebrating Subhas Utsab today to commemorate the 122nd birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

It is being celebrated in all the 342 blocks, 118 municipalities, six municipal corporations and the 144 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, along with each of the State’s district headquarters and the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA).

The festival are being organised by the Youth Services Department. The festivities began on 22nd January and will continue till today.

As part of the festival, mass rallies, exhibitions on the life and works of Subhas Chandra Bose, quiz contests on him, debates, sit-and-draw and essay writing competitions, and other cultural competitions and programmes are being held.

The famous songs of the Indian National Army (INA), like ‘Kadam kadam badaye ja’ and others, are being performed. Processions are being taken out to celebrate the great patriot.

One who can take everyone along is the one fit to lead the country: Mamata Banerjee in Darjeeling

Every year from 2014, on January 23, the State Government is celebrating the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in Darjeeling.

Netaji had stayed for some time in Darjeeling. That is why Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had decided to celebrate his birth anniversary there, in the form of a festival sha named Subhas Utsab.

Across Bangla, in every block, town and city, the festival is being celebrated through cultural programmes like sit-and-draw and essay-writing competitions, quiz shows and debates, and songs and dance shows.

The State Government has allocated Rs 10 lakh for the renovation of the house in Darjeeling where Netaji had stayed. The government has also declassified the secret files that it had.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary, Mamata Banerjee spoke at a government function in Darjeeling.

Salient points of her speech:

In 1936, Netaji had led the freedom struggle from Kurseong. In memory of that, our government had decided celebrate his birth anniversary here every year.

We are also celebrating in Kolkata, where the other ministers of the government are participating.

The slogan ‘Jai Hind’ is synonymous with Netaji, ‘Vande Mataram’ was coined by Bankim Chandra, while our national anthem was written Rabindranath Tagore.

In times of danger, it has always been Bengal that has showed the way. It was in Bengal that India’s struggle for independence started.

Subhas Chandra Bose formed the Indian National Army, in which Gorkhas from Nepal had enlisted. The first planning commission in India was also set up by him.

The one who can take everybody along, who can give his life for the country is the one who is fit to lead the country.

The one who is intent on breaking the nation up into pieces, creating divisions among its people can never lead it.

They have not done any work, have done nothing for the betterment of the people in the Hills region. They only make promises before elections which forget soon after.

It is sad that the Central Government has still not announced Netaji’s birth anniversary as a national holiday; the Bangla Government has already done so.

It is indeed sad and a matter of shame that even after so many years after independence, the death of Netaji has remained a mystery.

A secretariat for north Bengal has been constructed in Siliguri, a university has been set up – whatever needs to be done for the people of the Hills, we are doing. After the Lok Sabha elections, we will have a detailed discussion on the GTA.

The Bangla Government has set up 16 development boards, for which a total of Rs 625 crore has been allotted.

We do real development. We are committed to the development of the Hills.

Reaction to BJP President’s speech in Malda

The Chief National Spokesperson of the party, Derek O’Brien today issued a statement, reacting to the BJP President’s speech in Malda:

“After listening to the BJP president’s speech in Malda, it is obvious that they are very nervous. They know their days are numbered. They are politically scared.

Their speeches are low on facts and poor in taste. They don’t understand the ethos of India. They don’t understand the ethos of Bengal. They are heading towards a big zero.

Some are saying they are desperate. Some are saying they have gone mad. Or is it a combination of both?”

Mirik to be developed as tourist destination

Mirik, a picturesque town in the Hills, will be developed as a tourist destination. This is one of Chief Minister’s dream projects for the Hills. Already, plans are afoot to build the requisite infrastructure.

A sunrise point near Mirik College, Youth Hostel near Mirik Lake, home stay facilities in nearby villages, 100-bed hospital are some of the initiatives being taken.

The tourism minister said, “We want Mirik to feature prominently on the tourism map. The work is in progress.”

As Darjeeling and Kalimpong are becoming congested, tourists are looking for newer destinations to travel to in the Hills. Sitong, Lava, Rheshyap, Chatakpur have already become very popular. CM has similar plans to develop Mirik.

The municipal chairman of Mirik said, “We are developing the infrastructure as per CM’s guidance. We will develop the roads, drinking water supply and drainage system also.”

The allocation of funds to the department is being increased by the State Government every year. This is a clear indication of the importance that the Trinamool Congress Government places on the growth and development of north Bengal in all respects.

To go for a trekking or nature trail, the visitors would have to take permission from the Forest Department. They will also have to pay entry fees and charges for guides, the rates for which would be announced shortly. In each of the parks, only one route had been chosen for the trip.

The department has also readied a booklet containing maps of the routes, the flora and fauna which can be sighted along the trails, prospective sites where tents can be pitched, the dos’ and don’ts while moving through a reserve forest, the homestays available and several pictures.

The highest and toughest route is in the Neora Valley National Park, which would be a five-day expedition and would commence from Lava to Todey-Tangta, covering areas like Chaudaferi, Daulakhora, Jaributi, Alubari, Hatichere, Jorepokhri and Ruka. Located in Kalimpong, Neora Valley is fast gaining popularity among nature lovers.

If a visitor chooses Jaldapara, he/she will start from Lankapara and will move along hilly streams and rivers, reach close to the Bhutan border and will move though Totopara, a habitat of a primitive tribe in Madarihat block of Alipurduar, to reach Lankapara again after four days.

In due course, online booking facility for the treks and nature trails will be introduced. The plan is to create options for people to explore the nature in a sustained manner. The treks will also be helpful for researchers and students.
