Mamata Banerjee outlines poll strategy at core committee meeting

Kolkata, Feb 2: At the Trinamool core committee meeting today, Mamata Banerjee outlined the poll strategy of Trinamool Congress in the forthcoming assembly elections. According to her, the main planks would be — “return of peace and development” to Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s “achievements” as railway minister and the Left Front government’s “failures”. She asked party leaders and workers to “go for an all-out effort” in the run-up to the Assembly polls. “We have to tell the people what the railways has achieved under Mamata Banerjee and what the CPM has failed to do in its more than three- decade rule,” Trinamool leader Partha Chatterjee said after the meeting. Mamata Banerjee has asked party leaders and workers to reach out to the maximum number of people during the poll campaign, whose focus would be the “return of peace and development” to the state. “The people of Bengal want peace and development, and only Trinamool can give that. We want to tell the people that only Mamata Banerjee can bring change in Bengal,” a senior party leader said. In rallies over the past month, Ms Banerjee had focussed on the railways’ investments in Bengal. She had also laid out specific, detailed plans for 16 factories. She also asked district leaders to identify the key areas of development in places where Trinamool runs panchayats and municipalities. “We will have to highlight the development work the party has done at the local level,” a Trinamool leader said. The chairperson also asked party leaders not to make recommendations at the time of finalising the list of candidates for the Assembly polls. “The basic criteria for prospective candidates are past performance, ability to perform and deliver the goods and loyalty to the movements organised by the party. The core committee passed a unanimous resolution granting the chairperson absolute authority to finalise political alignments and the final list of candidates.
