2.5 lakh ponds created in seven years: Bangla CM

The State Government has created 2.5 lakh ponds under the Jal Dharo Jal Bharo Scheme in the last seven years, the Chief Minister informed the Assembly on November 20. She said that the ponds are being used for pisciculture, and for supplying water for irrigation.
She also said that irrigation infrastructure across vast areas is being rejigged. Rs 500 crore has been allocated for Bankura, Purulia and Birbhum districts, and Rs 2,000 crore for the lower Damodar region.
Further, on irrigation, the concerned minister said that the Diamond Harbour Canal is being rejuvenated. Across the State, 549 schemes have been taken up, for which Rs 2,261 crore has been spent already. A total of 562 new schemes have been taken up in 2018-19. The number of channels is being increased.
