Mamata Banerjee files case in Calcutta High Court challenging result of Bhabanipur seat

All India Trinamool Congress Chairperson Mamata Banerjee filed a petition at the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, challenging result of the Bhabanipur seat [which she lost] in the just-concluded assembly election.

She arrived at the court at around 1.50 pm, accompanied by Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh, and Rajya Sabha MPs Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen. Upon arrival, the chairperson went directly to the office of the Oath Commission. There, she filed an election petition challenging the Bhabanipur assembly constituency’s result.

Notably, Mamata Banerjee had been raising allegations of irregularities since the day of the counting of votes on May 4. She alleged that the counting of votes for the Bhabanipur constituency at Sakhawat Memorial Government Girls’ High School was conducted in an entirely one-sided manner.

She left the counting centre in the evening, with several rounds of counting still to be completed. She told the media stationed outside that she was pushed around and physically harassed. She also alleged the theft of votes.

On Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee initiated legal action against the declared result.

She left the Calcutta High Court premises after completing the necessary formalities of her case.
