Bengal CM slams Centre over LPG price hike

Coming down heavily on the BJP, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said the soaring prices of essential commodities will result in the middle-class being badly hit which will, in turn, become a question of their basic sustenance.

“The hike in fuel price will affect the kitchen while the rise in the price of petrol and diesel will hit the transport sector badly,” she told newsmen on Saturday. The Chief Minister also said that the price of cooking gas has skyrocketed without any rhyme or reason.

“Things are going beyond the reach of the middle-class. How can they make their both ends meet? How can they sustain,” she said and added: “But the Centre is not taking any measure to bring down the prices of petrol and diesel and that of the cooking gas.”

Mamata Banerjee has said over and again that the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel are affecting the transport sector badly. “The Centre is totally indifferent towards this problem faced by the common people,” she maintained.

Seven remarkable years of the Government of Maa, Mati, Manush

In May 2011, the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, established efficient governance in West Bengal, with the Government of Maa, Mati, Manush. On May 27, 2016, through a historic verdict, the government was sworn in for the second time in a row.

On the anniversary of this historic day, the Government of Maa, Mati, Manush rededicates itself to the service of people.

In the last seven years, Bengal has witnessed phenomenal growth in development and prosperity. Nearly 90% of the State’s population has benefited from various public services. 90% of the State’s population is provided with food grains at a subsidised rate, under the ‘Khadya Sathi’ scheme. Apart from this, the Government has also taken initiatives such as ‘Sabujshree’, ‘Kanyashree’, ‘Sikshashree’, ‘Sabuj Sathi’, ‘Sishu Sathi’, ‘Yuvashree’, ‘Rupashree’, ‘Manabik’, and ‘Samabyathi’, to name just a few.

These schemes have made available a plethora of services to all citizens, including members of scheduled castes, tribes, minorities, and OBCs.

As we complete a journey of seven years, we pledge anew to serve the people of the State to ensure holistic development, with unwavering passion.

Glimpses of the progress achieved in seven years:

• The average family income of the farmers of the State has undergone a three-fold increase

• Over 90 lakh individuals have secured employment, 144 crore man-days have been generated and the unemployment rate has fallen by almost 40%

• As compared to 2011, the expenditure on agriculture and its allied sectors has grown by 7 times

• The budgetary outlay for minority development has been raised by 8 times and almost 1.71 crore minority students have been provided with scholarships worth approximately Rs 4900 crore

• Almost 26,000 km of rural roads have been constructed/renovated and the construction/renovation of another 13,000 km of roads has been initiated

Delineating Development: The Bengal Model

Mamata Banerjee’s emphasis on grassroots upliftment has been critical to the flourishing Bengal model of development.

Economic development has different connotations for different classes of people. For the poor and the underprivileged, it means good roads and painless travel to the remote village where he lives, free education in his vicinity, easily accessible low-cost health services in his neighbourhood and, of course, two square meals a day. If these are provided, most among them will agree that the incumbent Government is serious about development. Indeed, the poor are easy to gratify.

The more privileged have different aspirations and so are their standards of judging good development. To climb up the ladder of success, they need the latest conveniences and opportunities around them – giant corporate houses, premier educational institutions, five-star hospitals, busy airports, jazzy shopping malls, clubs, golf courses – in short, a life commensurate with modern living and comforts, a life as lived in the richer parts of our planet. With the world getting increasingly globalised, blown-up lifestyles from distant lands are being forced on the privileged Indian, alienating him from the vast underprivileged majority. A dichotomous shining India is created by the side of the less radiant traditional Bharat. Over the years, as social and economic inequalities have increased, the dichotomy has become stronger. As a result, the divergence between the notions of development as envisaged by the rich and the poor is also getting enlarged.

The government in power, therefore, has a choice problem – it has to decide how much attention is to be given to each notion of development. For Mamata Banerjee, however, the choice was obvious. Ever since she assumed power, her government has devoted its primary attention to the idea of development as perceived by the underprivileged. As a consequence, the poor are unanimous in their opinion that the Government cares about them. It is not merely a question of distributing benefits. It is a process of giving the poor a kind of respect and dignity which was not there before.

Here are some examples. In the present regime, a kid from a poor household going to a government-aided school receives a package of goodies from the authorities which increases his incentive to attend school. The package includes a new bicycle to ride to school, a pair of shoes to protect the feet from mud and dust, an umbrella to protect the head from the scorching sun and a raincoat to protect the body from getting soaked during a soggy monsoon. What is more, the school building now looks more like a school rather than a god-forsaken warehouse. In a similar vein, a poor pregnant mother gets five thousand rupees from the Government for her first delivery in addition to a travelling allowance which depends on the distance between her residence and the nearest health centre.

There is hardly any mud house in the village. A poor household gets money from the government to build a pucca house and a toilet. Farmers get subsidised seeds, planters get money to grow bananas and other fruits. During a natural calamity, those affected get tarpaulin, food and a temporary shelter. Clean drinking water is provided by newly built tube-wells, one for every five families. And, of course, there are the much talked about achievements of Kanyashree and MGNREGA, which have earned international and national kudos. What is most important is that all these benefits to the poor are distributed irrespective of which political party one supports or which caste or religion one belongs to. Just like the immensely improved roads in the countryside, welfare benefits are there for each eligible citizen to enjoy.

Indeed, development management in Bengal under Mamata Banerjee involved a deep-rooted administrative reform. After Trinamool came to power, governance at the grassroots level was taken away from political entities and handed over to officials like BDOs, SDOs and DMs, who could be directly controlled and made answerable by the top administration. Compared to the earlier system practised by the CPI(M), where the party boss at the local level had the ultimate say, and where the Government official had to wait for his nod before making the slightest move, the new system entailed a fundamental change. In the new system, the bureaucrat has more power and responsibilities but, at the same time, he is always under the scanner of the Chief Minister who, with an inexorable energy, travels from district to district to assess the ground reality with her own eyes.

No other Chief Minister of West Bengal had taken so much pain and workload. As we have already seen, her hard work has paid off in a number of ways. Already, Bengal has been named number one in the country in terms of the ease of doing business.

Committed to working for the people: Mamata Banerjee on the seventh anniversary of Maa, Mati, Manush Govt

On the occasion of the seventh anniversary of Trinamool coming to power, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee greeted the people Bengal and reiterated her commitment towards working for the betterment of the people.

She posted on her Twitter page: “On May 20, 2011 the first Maa, Mati, Manush Government took oath of office. It has been seven years and we continue to be committed to working for the betterment of the people.”

On May 13, 2011, the people of Bengal gave a historic mandate, ousting the Left Front out of power. Mamata Banerjee took oath as the Chief Minister of Bengal on May 20, 2011 at 1:05 PM. To read more about the historic day, click here.

Seven years of Poriborton: Bengal now the model in development and governance

May 13 is one of the most important dates in the electoral history of Trinamool Congress. For on this date in 2011, Mamata Banerjee led the party in breaking down the 34-year-old Left citadel and coming to power; again in 2016, on this date, the party returned to power for a second consecutive term, again with a thumping majority.

The mandate of Ma, Mati, Manush has prevailed.

Seven years of running a cash-strapped Government is an inhuman job. However, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has proved more than equal to the task.

Despite a lion’s share of the State’s revenues being taken away by the Centre to service the debt incurred by the Left Front Government, Mamata Banerjee has carried out development in every sector in the State. Unthinkable, yet true.

What has the Government achieved in these seven years? Democracy, peace and progress. Mamata Banerjee has given confidence to the people. There is hope in the air that Bengal can be the best; and it, slowly but surely, is inching its way to the top. From fair price medicine shops to the Kanyashree Scheme, from setting records under the 100 Days’ Work Scheme to massive developments in the Jangalmahal region, Bengal is a national model now.

Seven years ago, Bengal had little to boast about. Now it can boast of Brand Bengal, or Biswa Bangla. Trinamool Congress raised the slogan ‘bodla noy, bodol chai‘ (‘we want change, not revenge’) and has lived up to the principle during the last six years.

Students in Bengal upset over errors in NEET Bengali question paper

Many students of Bengal appearing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) 2018 were visibly upset on Sunday, May 6, as they found out that their question papers in Bengali were filled with errors and there were ambiguities in many of the questions. In many cases, there was no proper Bengali translation. Students lost precious time over spelling errors, bizarre words and translation errors.

Over 59,000 students appeared for the examination across the State. There was a palpable sense of anger and dismay outside the exam centres as the students who sat for answering it in Bengali felt they had been wronged. One student, on the condition of anonymity, said, “I have worked so hard to prepare for this exam. Now I feel all my work has gone down the drain. The Centre is penalising us students who have studied in State Board schools. ICSE and CBSE students are getting an unfair advantage while students who have studied in vernacular languages are suffering”.

Trinamool Congress, along with the DMK, were the first to strongly raise their voice over this issue in Parliament.
Trinamool’s Derek O’Brien addressed the HRD Minister and said, “This year in Bengal and Tamil Nadu, out of 56,000 people who took that exam, 40,000 wrote it in Bengali; they got a separate paper, and the results have been disastrous. Those boys and girls, in our two States of Tamil Nadu and Bengal have been deprived”.

In the previous year also there was a furore over the standard of the question paper in most vernacular languages, with the medical aspirants from Bengal and from some other States alleging that their questions were much tougher than the ones in made in English and Hindi.

Reject outright the Opposition’s malicious campaign and unfounded allegations: AITC MPs in letter to President of India

A delegation of AITC Parliamentary Party, along with the family members of party workers killed by BJP in pre-poll violence, today called on the Hon’ble President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Every family member described in detail to the Hon’ble President the horrors unleashed upon them by the Opposition.

Reproduced below is the memorandum in full.

May 3, 2018

To
The Hon’ble President of India
Rashtrapati Bhavan
New Delhi

Respected President,

At the outset, we, the Members of the Parliament, belonging to the All India Trinamool Congress, would like to convey our highest regards to you.

We would like to apprise you of some issues which have been brought to your kind notice very recently by the Members of the Ruling political party at the Centre, which are distorted and misleading in nature.

Respected Sir, Panchayat election is a local election, where more than 58 thousand booths throughout West Bengal will go for the polls on 14 May 2018. At the time of filing nomination papers, the BJP started spreading rumours and misleading the people, saying that opposition parties are not being allowed to file nominations. This was spread through one particular ‘sponsored’ media group.

The fact that the Opposition has not been able to submit nominations is not at all true, as more than 96 thousand nominations have been filed by the Opposition parties. If they have not been allowed to file nomination papers, how is it possible that more than 2 lakh nominations in total have been filed? Out of these, more than 96 thousand are from the Opposition. During the period of filing nominations, the entire administration from district level to the block level, along with the police officials worked together for the common people.

Respected Sir, few incidents, however, did take place. These have been over-projected through one particular ‘sponsored’ media group to tarnish the image of the Government, which has worked wonders in West Bengal after being voted to power in 2011.

Before 2011, political violence was the maximum in West Bengal. In Jangal Mahal itself, more than 300 people were killed. At that time, man-days lost due to bandhs and strikes were about 78 lakh.

The picture changed dramatically after the All India Trinamool Congress Party came to power in 2011. While Darjeeling and Jangal Mahal are totally peaceful, there is zero man-days loss in the State of West Bengal.

Respected Sir, you would no doubt appreciate that West Bengal now has become Number One in the country in the spheres detailed below:

  • Number One in man-days generation and total expenditure under 100-Days’ Work
  • Number One in Bank Credit Flows to the MSME Sector
  • Number One in the Ease of Doing Business
  • Number One in Minority Scholarships
  • Number One in Minority Loans (for self-employment)
  • Number One in Rural Housing
  • Number One in Rural Connectivity
  • Number One in Skills
  • Number One in Transparency and e-Tendering

In order to tarnish the image of West Bengal and to mislead the people by citing some incidents, the BJP got themselves involved in lynching and killing by hiring people from outside the State and fomenting communal violence.

Respected Sir, you will be shocked and saddened to learn that 5 murder cases took place very recently and all the persons killed belong to the All India Trinamool Congress Party. The list of persons killed is given below:

  1. On 11.04.18, around 17.00 hrs, some supporters of TMC Party assembled near Beliaghata Bridge Party Office under Shasan Police Station, Basirhat Police District to celebrate the uncontested victory in c/w the Falti Beliaghata Gram Panchayat. During the celebration, one Rajab Ali of Uttar Falti stabbed one Saifar Rahaman of Dakshin Baidyapur and fled away. The said Saifar expired on the way to hospital.
  2. On 22.04.18, around 05.00 hrs, one Abdul Ali Mondal along with three others all of Nityananda Kati under Basirhat Police Station, North 24 Parganas allegedly murdered one Amirul Mollick of the same area by slashing the throat and dumped the body in the drain near his house. The deceased belongs to TMC Party.
  3. On 14.04.18, around 16.30 hrs, one Kala Das of Fulbari along with 15 others restrained and assaulted one Bablu Sarkar, member of TMC, of Kethi near Nabaganj Bazar under Ghoksadanga Police Station of Coochbehar district, with the intention to kill, while returning home riding a bike. He was taken to the nearest hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on 20.04.2018. Arrest-03.
  4. On 23.04.18, around 11.30 hrs., while one Dildar Khan along with his wife was proceeding towards Suri-I BDO Office under Suri Police Station, Birbhum for filing nomination in respect of his wife as a TMC candidate in c/w ensuring Panchayat Election 2018, some armed BJP supporters led by one Shyamsundar Lorain shot dead the said  Dildar Khan over political rivalry.
  5. On 19.04.18, one Ajit Debnath of Sundarpore Satberia, PS Gopalnagar was shot at night while at home; hesubsequently succumbed to his injuries in hospital on 22.04.18. His wife Padma was also injured in the attack; however, she survived.

It is very unfortunate that we have to bring this to your kind attention that in each and every murder, as described above, the BJP is involved.

Respected Sir, we do sincerely hope and know that your high office would appreciate the true situation on the ground perpetrated by a section of political parties opposed to peaceful democratic processes in Bengal. We appeal to you in the best interest of peace and democracy, to outright reject their malicious campaign and unfounded allegations.

With regards,

Yours sincerely,

Financial security for landless labourers

The State Government ensures financial security for landless labourers through the Provident Fund for Landless Agricultural Labourers (PROFLAL) scheme. Around 13.01 lakh landless labourers have been covered under the programme so far.

All landless agricultural labourers within the age group of 18 to 50 years who are recorded holders of up to 50 decimal of land, including homestead land, and whose major source of earnings is from their work as agricultural labourers, are eligible for the scheme. The eligible subscribers have to deposit Rs 20 per month and the State Government contributes an equal amount till the subscribers attain the age of 50. The accumulated amount, along with usual interest, is then paid to the subscribers.

The scheme is administered by the Gram Panchayats at the village level. The block development officer concerned has a supervisory role in implementing the scheme.

There is another social security scheme especially for landless labourers – Aam Admi Bima Yojana. This covers all landless labourers, not just agricultural ones. It is administered jointly by the State and the Centre, each paying an annual instalment of Rs 200 per person. Till date, 8.74 lakh have been covered under this scheme.

Tiger death: Union Minister has insulted Adivasis in Bengal, says Mamata Banerjee

Statement by Mamata Banerjee:

I am saddened that a Union Minister has made unwarranted comments about a community. She said that Adivasis are poachers and they torture animals. I feel she should apologise to the Adivasi community.

With people like them in the Cabinet, the government as well as the nation is in a precarious situation. I completely condemn the comment made by her. Adivasi brothers and sisters are our assets. Is she aware how many forests and deep forests we have in Bengal? Does she know how many tigers, elephants, rhinos, bisons or deer are there in Bengal?

From Jhargram to Bankura, Purulia to Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri to Birbhum – we have many forests in Bengal. People protect these forests with their lives. The administration is also active.

A tiger has died. How did she know it was killed by the Adivasis. Many people have different theories about the death of the tiger. Police and forest department officials have used drones to spot this tiger over the last few weeks. Common people were living in fear. It even injured villagers who went to collect kendu leaves in the forest. Two people are in the hospital. The Union Minister is commenting without knowing anything about Bengal’s culture.

During elections they use Adivasis armed with bows and arrows. They hold Ram Navami rallies with arms. Don’t they feel ashamed then? Few days ago, they brought Adivasis from Jharkhand, armed with bows and arrows. That’s fine and now Adivasis are bad? At a time when Dalits are being persecuted across the country, her comments reflect the BJP’s stand on SC/STs, Dalits, Adivasis and common people.

She must apologise to the nation. Bengal has a rich culture and heritage. She has no right to insult Bengal and Adivasis. We will not tolerate it. People of Bengal will give a fitting reply.

How did she know that Shikar Utsav was held? Did she use a telescope? A tiger died and curious people came to see it. Even when people die, relatives and others come to pay their respects. How can she compare this with Shikar Utsav? She cannot ridicule a tradition of the Adivasi community?

In her bid to insult Bengal, she has insulted Adivasis. I am the last person to tolerate it. People of all communities, religions and cultural backgrounds live together in harminy in Bengal. She does not understand this culture. Their culture is creating divisions among people.

She has insulted people of Bengal, Adivasi brothers and sisters. They will have to repent for this act. People will judge them for their actions.

I am the last person to tollerate it.
