The Bengal Government is making every effort to promote the state on the back of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. With the world’s attention on the city, this is the best time to promote Kolkata and Bengal. The government is using both online and offline methods to promote the state.
For example, the hashtag #BiswaBanglayBiswaCup is being extensively used on Twitter, Facebook and other online platforms to promote the government’s activities. All advertising, both online and offline, regarding the World Cup has the tagline ‘Biswa Banglay Biswa Cup’, along with the logo of FIFA.

Teasers have been put up across the city, with the tagline ‘Ebar Khela, Jombe Bangla’, coined by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself, the big football fan that she is. The State Government has been spreading the brand, Biswa Bangla, again a conception of Mamata Banerjee, across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and across the State Government’s websites.

A separate website has been created on the World Cup and related facilities like health, police, etc. A YouTube channel has been set up where a music video specially created for the World Cup by the State Government has been uploaded, whose lyrics and music are both by the Chief Minister. The video has been a massive hit, as proved by the number of clicks.

Needless to say, behind the planning and execution, the hand of the Chief Minister was everywhere. Mamata Banerjee took an active part in the whole planning for the mega tournament and was intent on making Kolkata the best host city in every way.

ফুটবল ঘিরে বাংলার চোখ ডিজিটালে

বাংলাকে বিশ্বের দরবারে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে ‘বিশ্ব বাংলা’ ব্র্যান্ড তো ছিলই। সেই সঙ্গে যুব বিশ্বকাপের আগমনে এখন সরগরম কলকাতা। রাজ্য সরকারের নতুন স্লোগানও তাই দুইয়ের বন্ধনে নজরকাড়া— #বিশ্ববাংলায়বিশ্বকাপ!

সামনে ‘হ্যাশট্যাগ’-এর অর্থ সহজবোধ্য। এই আধুনিক দুনিয়ায় বিপণনের কোনও দরজাই বন্ধ রাখতে চায় না রাজ্য সরকার। সেখানে প্রধান পথই ‘ডিজিটাল’। লক্ষ্য একটাই— যুব বিশ্বকাপে রাজ্যকে তার শতাব্দী প্রাচীন যাবতীয় ঐশ্বর্য-সহ দুনিয়ার সামনে এক ‘ক্লিকে’ হাজির করা।

তাই হ্যাশট্যাগ-স্লোগান যেমন আছে, তেমনই আছে শহরজুড়ে বিশ্বকাপের ‘টিজার’। পুজো পর্যন্ত যা ছিল, ‘গৌরবের শহরে গর্বিত আমরা’। বিশ্বকাপের ঢাকে কাঠি পড়তেই তা পাল্টে হয়েছে— ‘এবার খেলা, জমবে বাংলা’। মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর লেখা এই টিজার নিয়ে জোর প্রচার শুরু হয়ে গিয়েছে রাজ্য জুড়ে।

ফুটবল-উৎসবে যোগ দিতে বাংলায় আসার আগেই বিশ্ববাসী যাতে জমাটি আবহের আঁচ পেতে পারে, তার জন্য ওয়েবসাইট, ইউটিউব, টুইটার, ফেসবুক, ইনস্টাগ্রাম— সর্বত্রই ‘বিশ্ব বাংলা’ ব্র্যান্ড ছড়িয়ে দিয়েছে রাজ্য।

ওয়েবসাইটে মিলছে বাংলার ফুটবল, ঐতিহ্য, পর্যটন, খাবারের হদিস। সেই সঙ্গে পুলিশ, চিকিৎসা-সহ জরুরি পরিষেবা সংক্রান্ত তথ্যও। চাইলে এই ওয়েবসাইট থেকেই খেলার টিকিট কাটতে পারেন দর্শকেরা।

সোশ্যাল মিডিয়া প্ল্যাটফর্মে জোর প্রচারের পাশাপাশি ক্রীড়াপ্রেমীদের আকর্ষণ করতে চলছে নানা প্রতিযোগিতাও।

Huge improvement in sports infrastructure in Bengal

The sports infrastructure in Bengal during the last six years, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has improved significantly.

The Department of Youth Services and Sports has undertaken a lot of programmes on the education, health, employment and holistic mental and physical development of students and the youth.
Development of playgrounds: Financial assistance given to 331 institutions/ organisations

Setting up of multi-gyms: Financial assistance given to 2,244 institutions / organisations

Construction of mini indoor games facilities: Financial assistance given to 635 institutions/ organisations

Tournaments: Organisation of Annual Youth Festivals and Jangalmahal Cup, and financial assistance to police authorities for conducting the Sunderban Cup and Himal-Tarai Dooars Sports Festival.

Mountaineering and adventure sports: Encouraging the youth to take up mountaineering and adventure sports activities under the aegis of the West Bengal Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Foundation (WBMASF). During the last six years, 18 mountaineers from the state have conquered Mt Everest (compare this to only 4 from 1947 to May 2011). Stringent rules have been framed to select the climbers for Mt Everest and other 8000 metres above peaks. Through the department, rock climbing courses, coastal trekking, mountaineering expeditions, mountaineering courses at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling, assistance to mountaineering clubs, etc. are organised. Radhanath Sikdar and Tenzing Norgay Adventure Awards and Chhanda Gayen Bravery Award have been introduced, and are given every year.

Bangla Yuba Kendra: To create a healthy socio-cultural ambience, a three-tier organisation (block-level, district-level and state-level) named Bangla Yuba Kendra has been set up to coordinate the different programmes of this department.

Budgetary allocation: The Plan Expenditure has increased by multiple times in the last six years – from Rs 5.52 crore during 2010-11 to Rs 185.3 crore during 2016-17 in the case of Youth Services and from Rs 29.29 crore during 2010-11 to Rs 237.21 crore during 2016-17 in the case of Sports.

Building of stadiums and sports complexes: Stadiums in Nayagram (Jhargram district), Salboni (Paschim Medinipur district), Memari and Bhatar (Purba Bardhaman district), Onda (Bankura district), Islampur (Uttar Dinajpur) and Uluberia (Howrah district), Archery Academy in Jhargram district, swimming pools in Baruipur and Canning (South 24 Parganas district), sports academy (including stadium) in Khatra (Bankura district), sports complexes (including stadiums) in Barrackpore and Naihati (North 24 Parganas district), and sports complex at Tala Park in Kolkata.

Renovation and modernisation of sports infrastructure: Flood lighting and renovation of the Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting grounds in Kolkata, flood lighting of Kanchenjungha Stadium in Siliguri, renovation of Lebong Stadium in Darjeeling, the indoor stadium at Rajbati Stadium Complex in Cooch Behar, Howrah Municipal Corporation Stadium, Eastern Ground in Chinsura, the swimming pool in Barijhati (both in Hooghly district) and Jhargram Stadium, upgradation and renovations of Bolpur and Suri Stadiums (Birbhum district), Ranaghat, Shantipur, Krishnagar,Kalyani and Nabadwip Stadiums (Nadia district), and Spandan Sports Ground at Kalna Aghorenath Park Stadium (Purba Bardhaman), construction of Balurghat Indoor Sports Complex (Dakshin Dinajpur district), construction and renovation of stadiums in Diamond Harbour Sports Complex and Kultali Dr BR Ambedkar College (South 24 Parganas district), renovation of Aurobindo Stadium (Purba Medinipur district), construction of Rakhal Memorial Sports Complex (Purba Medinipur district) and indoor stadium and sports hostel in Purulia and Kashipore Stadium (Purulia district), and the development of DSA Stadium, Brindabani Park and Satya Chowdhuri Indoor Stadium in Malda.

Management and monitoring of sporting activities: Management and monitoring of sporting activities in the districts to achieve the goals of district and sub-divisional sports councils.

Awards: Khel Samman to 89 present sportspersons, Banglar Gourab awards to 114 retired sportspersons, Kriraguru Sammans to 34 eminent coaches and Lifetime Achievement Awards to eight eminent sports personalities.

FIFA Under-17 World Cup: Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) has been upgraded and beautified for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup matches to be held there.

২০১১ সালে তৃণমূল কংগ্রেস ক্ষমতায় আসার পর থেকেই যুগান্তকারী পরিবর্তন এসেছে বাংলার ক্রীড়ার চিত্রপটে। শুধু খেলোয়াড়দের সম্বর্ধনা দেওয়া নয়, গড়ে উঠছে খেলোয়াড় তৈরি হবার পরিকাঠামো। খুলে গেছে আরও নতুন খেলার দিক।

রাজ্যের ৮৩৬৩ ক্লাবকে যুব কল্যাণ এবং ক্রীড়া বিভাগ খেলাধুলা এবং স্থায়ী সম্পদের জন্য আর্থিক সহায়তা দান করেছে। রাজ্য পর্যায়ের স্পোর্টস অ্যাসোসিয়েশনগুলিকে প্রত্যেক খেলাধুলোর জন্যও ৫লক্ষ টাকা হারে আর্থিক সহায়তা প্রদান করা হয়েছে।

যুব কল্যাণ এবং ক্রীড়া দপ্তর সুন্দরবন কাপ, হিমাল-তরাই ডুয়ার্স ক্রীড়া উৎসব আয়োজনের জন্যও পুলিশ কর্তৃপক্ষকে আর্থিক সহায়তা দান করেছে.

এই বছরে ফিফা অনূর্ধ্ব-১৭ বিশ্বকাপ আয়োজিত হবে বিবেকানন্দ যুবভারতী ক্রীড়াঙ্গনে। তাই, আন্তর্জাতিক মানের সঙ্গে সমন্বয় রেখে বিবেকানন্দ যুবভারতী ক্রীড়াঙ্গন এবং তার সংশ্লিষ্ট এলাকার উন্নয়ন ও সৌন্দর্যায়ণ হয়েছে। আন্তর্জাতিক প্রতিযোগিতা পর্যায়ের সঙ্গে সঙ্গতি রেখে সম্পূর্ণ শ্রীবৃদ্ধিসাধন, খেলার মাঠ, আলোর ব্যবস্থা, অভ্যাসের জায়গা সহায়ক সুবিধার ব্যবস্থা করা হয়েছে।

আর্থিক কর্মসম্পাদন যা ২০১০-১১ সালে ছিল ২৯.২৯ কোটি টাকা, তা আজ ২০১৬-১৭ সালে বেড়ে হয়েছে ২৩৭.২১ কোটি টাকা।

Mamata Banerjee pens promo song for U-17 World Cup

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has penned a promo song for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup; it was launched on September 20.

The World Cup started from October 6. The Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata will host 10 matches, including the final, from October 8 to October 28.

The song reflects the excitement and feelings associated with football. At the same time, the message of communal harmony has also been given through the song. The song has been launched in audio format, and a video format will come out soon.

The song will be distributed among Durga Puja organisers and it will be played in many Durga Puja mandaps.

The Chief Minister takes a keen interest in the development of sports in the state and taken a number of measures including setting up infrastructure, starting tournaments, and giving awards and monetary aids to sportspersons and clubs.

অনূর্ধ্ব ১৭ বিশ্বকাপের প্রোমো সং লিখলেন মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়

গত ২০সে সেপ্টেম্বর মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের লেখা ফিফা অনূর্ধ্ব ১৭ বিশ্বকাপের প্রোমো সং-এর উদ্বোধন হল।

এই বিশ্বকাপ শুরু হবে ৬ই অক্টোবর। কলকাতার বিবেকানন্দ যুব ভারতী ক্রীড়াঙ্গনে মত ১০টি ম্যাচ অনুষ্ঠিত হবে। এর মধ্যে আছে ফাইনালও। ফাইনাল অনুষ্ঠিত হবে ২৮সে অক্টোবর।

এই খেলায় মানুষের যে ভালোবাসা ও আবেগ জড়িয়ে আছে, সেটি গানে আছে। সাম্প্রদায়িক সম্প্রীতির বার্তাও আছে, এই গানটির অডিওটি প্রকাশিত হয়েছে, ভিডিওটি প্রকাশিত হবে খুব শীঘ্রই।

দুর্গা পুজো আয়োজকদের এই গানটি বিতরণ করা হবে ও এটি মণ্ডপগুলিতে চালানো হবে।

মুখ্যমন্ত্রী ২০১১ সাল থেকেই ক্রীড়া জগতকে ঢেলে সাজাতে উদ্যোগী হয়েছেন। অনেক পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছেন যার মধ্যে পরিকাঠামো উন্নয়ন থেকে, টুর্নামেন্ট শুরু করা, ক্লাব ও খেলোয়াড়দের পুরস্কার ও অর্থনৈতিক অনুদানও আছে।

Bengal Tourism Dept to train students to act as guides during World Cup

‘Atithi Bandhu’ or ‘Friend of Guest’ – around 200 students studying Hospitality and Tourism Management courses in Kolkata have been trained to act as such during the days of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Kolkata. Ten matches, including the final would be played in the city.

They would be guides to some of the approximately 3,000 foreign tourists expected to be in the city daily during the duration of the World Cup. This number is expected to become 10,000 per day around the days of the final.

The Bengal Tourism Department is involved in getting these students trained in Spanish, Portuguese and German – languages other than English which are expected to be the mother tongues of most of the foreign tourists – at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, as well as giving them other necessary training to turn them into effective tourist guides.

Kolkata is one of the favourite cities with foreign tourists and the grand sporting occasion is expected to act as a major boost to the number. Be it Victoria Memorial, India Museum, Kalighat Temple or the other historical and cultural sites of Kolkata, or the places linked to the lives of Mother Teresa, Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray – the three most-recognised personalities from the City of Joy – these ‘Atithi Bandhus’ or ‘Friends of Guests’ would be the ideal people to interpret the significance of these places and guide tourists through them.

Details regarding the identities of these guides – like names, e-mail addresses, etc. – as well as the cost of hiring them would be available on the website of the State Tourism Department. Tourists can contact the guides directly through the website.

This is not a one-off project though. The State Government, through the Tourism Department, is going to make ‘Atithi Bandhu’ an ever-continuing project, for foreign tourists arrive in Kolkata throughout the year; and Christmas is the next big occasion.

ফুটবল-মহোৎসব দেখার পাশাপাশি এবার ফুটবলের শহরটাও ঘুরে দেখবেন বিদেশি অতিথিরা। ‘পুজোর শহর’ বদলে যাচ্ছে ‘যুব বিশ্বকাপ ফুটবলের শহরে’। ফুটবল দেখতে দেখতে কলকাতাকে দেখার ইচ্ছে হলে কোনও চিন্তা নেই। আপনাকে শহর ঘুরিয়ে দেখাবে অতিথি-বন্ধু।

চিলে, ইংল্যান্ড, ইরাকের ফুটবলারেরা ইতিমধ্যেই কলকাতায় হাজির। মেক্সিকোও দু’এক দিনের মধ্যে এসে পড়বে। চার দেশের ফুটবলারদের সঙ্গেই আসছেন কয়েক হাজার সমর্থক। এই বিদেশিদের কাছে টেনে কলকাতার পর্যটনকে জনপ্রিয় করতে এখন মরিয়া রাজ্য সরকার।

রাজ্যের নতুন অস্ত্র— ‘অতিথি-বন্ধু’। এরা আসলে হসপিটালিটি এবং ট্যুরিজম ম্যানেজমেন্টের বাছাই করা শ’দুয়েক পড়ুয়া। যাদের তৈরি করা হয়েছে বিশেষ প্রশিক্ষণ দিয়ে। ‘অতিথি-বন্ধুরা বিদেশি পর্যটকদের নিয়ে যাবেন তাঁদের পছন্দসই সাবেক কলকাতার নানা জায়গায়।

অতিথি-বন্ধুরা সকলেই ইংরেজিতে স্বচ্ছন্দ। গোলপার্ক রামকৃষ্ণ মিশন থেকে স্প্যানিশ, পর্তুগিজ ও জার্মান ভাষায় কথা বলার প্রাথমিক পাঠও তাঁদের দেওয়া হয়েছে। নাম, ই-মেল আইডি-সহ অতিথি-বন্ধুদের যাবতীয় তথ্য দেওয়া থাকছে রাজ্য পর্যটন দফতরের ওয়েবসাইটে। সেখানেই যোগাযোগ করে কথাবার্তা আগাম সেরে রাখতে পারবেন বিদেশিরা। গোটা বন্দোবস্তের অবশ্যই কিছু খরচ রয়েছে। একই ভাবে সাম্মানিক পাবেন অতিথি-বন্ধুরাও।

গ্রুপ পর্বের খেলা চলার সময়ে কলকাতায় দৈনিক গড়ে ৩ হাজার পর্যটক থাকবেন। ফাইনালের সময়ে তা ১০ হাজার ছাড়াবে। এদের থাকার জন্য শহরের পাঁচতারা হোটেলগুলি সহ ধর্মতলার আশপাশের হোটেলগুলিকেও তৈরি রাখা হচ্ছে। বিশ্বকাপ শেষ হলেও অতিথি-বন্ধুদের কাজ ফুরোবে না। কলকাতায় বিদেশিদের আনাগোনা লেগেই থাকে। বড়দিনে তা আরও বাড়বে।

They have endured taunts, insults, threats and even physical attacks. Yet they never strayed from their path of working for the welfare of the girl child.

During the last two years, these ‘Kanyashree Yodhas’, or ‘Kanyashree warriors’, as they have been named, of Hariharpara in Murshidabad district have managed to stop 39 child marriages, and most of these children are now back in school.

These bravehearts are among the beneficiaries the of the Bengal Government’s landmark, internationally-feted Kanyashree Scheme, the brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

To celebrate their achievements, and to encourage more and more girls to emulate these brave Kanyashrees, the local panchayat samity has built a park specially for them. It has been named ‘Kanyashree Yoddha Park’, and is spread over 5,000 square metres.

It was inaugurated recently in the presence of 85 such ‘Kanyashree Yodhas’ and their guardians by the block development officer (BDO) of Hariharpara, who is the driving force behind this initiative.

Here, they would learn and practice karate, play football and do other physical activities. In the park, there is also a room with computers. It is meant to be a meeting room as well as a place for the girls to discuss and exchange news related to their activities and development from across the world through the internet.

কন্যাশ্রী যোদ্ধাদের জন্যই পার্ক মুর্শিদাবাদে

কোথাও জুটেছে গালি, কোথাও শারীরিক নিগ্রহ, কখনও পথে-ঘাটে হুমকি, কটূক্তি। ওরা হার মানেনি। দু’বছরে রুখেছে অন্তত ৩৯ জন নাবালিকার বিয়ে। যে মেয়েদের অনেকেই ফিরেএসেছে স্কুলে।
যাদের দৌলতে নাবালিকা বিয়ে রোখায় অন্যতম অগ্রণী মুর্শিদাবাদের হরিহরপাড়া, সেই কন্যাশ্রী যোদ্ধাদের জন্যই গড়া হল পার্ক। সেখানে তারা ক্যারাটে শিখবে, ফুটবল খেলবে, লাগোয়া ঘরে বসে বিনিময় করবে খবরাখবর, মিটিং করবে। কম্পিউটার ঘেঁটে জানবে দেশ-বিদেশের তথ্য, অনলাইন আবেদনও করতে পারবে।

হরিহরপাড়া ব্লক অফিসের সামনে পঞ্চায়েত সমিতির প্রায় পাঁচ হাজার বর্গমিটার জমি ঘিরে গড়ে তোলা সেই ‘কন্যাশ্রী যোদ্ধা পার্ক’-এর উদ্বোধন হল। ঘাসে ছাওয়া পার্ক ঘিরে রকমারি গাছ। পাঁচ জন বসতে পারে এমন ছাউনি দেওয়া আটটি বেঞ্চ চারদিকে ছড়ানো, সঙ্গে দোলনা। সকা‌ল থেকে বিকেল ৫টা পর্যন্ত এই পার্ক থাকবে কন্যাশ্রীদের দখলে।

উদ্বোধনে হাজির ছিল ৮৫ জন কন্যাশ্রী যোদ্ধা আর তাদের অভিভাবকেরা।

Mamata Banerjee thanks people, puja committees and administration after Durga Puja

Bengal CM took to her Facebook page to thank the crores of people who participated in the festivities of the Durga Puja, the Puja committees for their cooperation and the police and the administration for maintaining discipline and smoothness.

At the end of Durga Puja, the biggest festival in the world, I would like to thank the crores of people who visited the puja mandaps and participated in the festivities and made the festival celebration so joyful.

I would also like to thank the puja committees, clubs and all communities for their total cooperation and overwhelming support.
I thank the police and civil administration for their tireless endeavour to make the puja celebration smooth, peaceful and disciplined.

Some of the noted puja organisers will be participating in the carnival at Red Road on 3 October, being organised by the state government for the second time.

I invite all of you to come and witness the beautiful event.

Delhi’s So-Called National Media and Its Irrelevant Obsessions

Indian politics has changed, but the national media hasn’t quite realised it. Actually, it would be a travesty to call a bunch of Delhi-based channels and newspapers – some of which sell barely a few thousand copies – the ‘national media’. They are the Delhi media and yet they have given themselves national status. Regional-language papers and channels, whether in Bengali or Gujarati, Tamil or Hindi, may sell millions more and be watched by millions more but they will never be considered ‘national’. Like the ‘regional parties,’ they are forever consigned to second-rate status in the Delhi media caste system.

The Rajya Sabha has 233 elected members, of which around fifty per cent belong to the BJP and the Congress. Fifty per cent% of the House is made up of the non-BJP non-Congress parties, many who often act in concert. For example, anti-Dalit atrocities in Gujarat and elsewhere were raised by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Trinamool and other parties. I recall the attempt to make Aadhaar compulsory for claiming government benefits and availing public services – an imposition that is contrary to earlier commitments by the government and the advice of the courts -was protested against by the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Trinamool Congress (AITC).

Issues of public importance are taken up by the opposition when Parliament is in session. Often these subjects are first raised by comparatively smaller parties not always by the Congress, who have by far the most number of opposition MPs in the Rajya Sabha. The media, almost by reflex action, reports it, however, as a Congress versus BJP battle. Generally speaking, regional parties – fifty per cent of the Rajya Sabha as I said – are given scant coverage. The one exception among the smaller parties is the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Good for them. I suspect they get more than a fair share of media coverage because they are based in the capital. If AAP were a Bengaluru based party phenomenon or a Mumbai-based party, it would have received the same neglect. For Delhi’s media supremacists, there is no India beyond the capital, or at best Gurgaon and Noida.

This may sound like a churlish complaint. It is not, and Trinamool is certainly not pleading for column inches and prime-time space. The fact is that this is a snapshot of inadequate knowledge and awareness of political and social issues and the churning in the country by a media permanently stationed in Central Hall. I got a taste of this during the 2016 West Bengal election, when Delhi-based journalists were making wild predictions without setting foot in the state and without speaking to anybody other than BJP and Congress and occasionally CPI(M) fat cats who were and are Delhi fixtures.

Doesn’t India deserve better? Doesn’t the media industry, now so rich and well-endowed, aspire to higher standards? Isn’t there a credibility gap? Does the media have interest in understanding how policy is shaped and legislation is negotiated in Parliament? Can this be done without engaging with and understanding what I term the ‘middle bloc’ – the state parties that occupy the largest space in the Upper House, between the BJP and the Congress?

The media is overwhelmed by the same one dozen personalities and politicians from the two big parties that it interacts with everyday. The ‘special briefings’ too come from the same folks. What is even more dangerous is that some glam television anchors are becoming self-obsessed. Do you recall the bizarre sight of an anchor on News Channel A interviewing an anchor from News Channel B about the conduct and views of an anchor from News Channel C? I was aghast.

This is delusional. Who the hell is interested, in this country of a billion people, if a couple of senior journalists have a personality clash or even an argument on principles? It can form the subject of a panel discussion at the India International Centre or Press Club, but how is it prime-time news? The messenger cannot become the message. The media cannot be interviewing each other and reporting on each other. That is what we did when we produced college magazines.

I know much has been said in the past about ‘nationalist’ and ‘anti-national’ media. This is a tiresome debate. Much more important than this squabble about ‘nationalist’ and ‘anti-national’ is the question of what the Delhi-based media considers ‘national’ and what it considers ‘regional’. We very easily give these titles and names to media outlets, to politicians and to economic, social and political grievances and concerns. So a short-lived Delhi-Gurgaon flood, which causes only traffic jams, is a ‘national story’. And a week-long flood in West Bengal or Assam, which displaces thousands and kills fifty, is a small-time ‘regional’ story. I rest my case.

Mamata Banerjee inaugurates several community Durga Puja pandals

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated several community Durga Pujas this week. She started inaugurating from the day before Mahalaya.

The Chief Minister inaugurated Ekdalia Evergreen, Hindustan Park, Behala Natun Dal, Ajay Sanhati, Naktala Udayan Sangha, Jodhpur Park 95 Pally, Ahiritola Durgotsav, Santoshpur Sarbajonin, Sreebhumi Sporting Club and several other pandals.

Like every year, this year too she drew the eyes of Ma Durga – called ‘chokkhudan’ (‘gifting the eyes’) in Bengali, which is a crucial ritual of Durga Puja – at Chetla Agrani Club.

The Chief Minister has appealed to the Puja committees to maintain tight security at the pandals so that people can enjoy the sights and sounds in an orderly and peaceful manner.

প্রতি বছরের মত, এবারও তিনি চেতলা অগ্রণী ক্লাবে মা দুর্গার চক্ষুদান করেন।

উৎসবের দিনগুলোতে পুজো প্যান্ডেলগুলিতে কঠোর নিরাপত্তা ব্যবস্থা, শান্তি ও সম্প্রীতি বজায় রাখার জন্য পুজো কমিটিগুলোকে বিশেষ আবেদন জানিয়েছেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী।

Bengal Chief Minister writes Durga Puja theme song

Like in the last two years, this year too Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written the theme song for the Suruchi Sangha Durga Puja in New Alipore.

The theme song for this year is Boichitrer Muktoy Gantha Ekotar Monihar. Through this song, Mamata Banerjee has endeavoured to spread the message of peace and communal harmony. The music for the song has been composed by Jeet Ganguly and the song has been sung by Shreya Ghosal. A music video has also been produced, which is available online.

Despite her busy schedule, Mamata Banerjee makes it a point to give time for creative pursuits – be it painting or writing stories and poems as well as non-fiction. Till date, she has written almost 70 books. Every year, during the International Kolkata Book Fair, she releases her books.

দুর্গা পুজোর থিম সং লিখলেন মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়

গত দু’বছরের ন্যায় এবারেও সুরুচি সংঘের দুর্গা পুজোর থিম সং লিখলেন তৃণমূল নেত্রী তথা রাজ্যের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়।

নানা ব্যস্ততার মধ্যেও দিদি লেখান এবং ছবি আঁকেন। আজ অবধি ওনার ৭০টি বই প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। ওনার লেখা নতুন বই বেরোবে ২০১৮ সালের বইমেলায়।

এই থিম সংটির শীর্ষক হল ‘বৈচিত্রের মুক্তোয় গাঁথা একতার মণিহার ’ – এই গানের মাধ্যমে দিদি সম্প্রীতি ও শান্তির বার্তা দিয়েছেন।

For Singur, Durga Puja 2017 would be special indeed

For the residents of Singur, the 2017 Durga Puja would be special. After a long struggle, they have at last got back their land, taken away forcibly in 2006 for setting up industry by the Left Front Government.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been instrumental in the successful culmination of the Singur Movement. A few months back, after the Supreme Court’s final verdict, Mamata Banerjee had herself felicitated the people involved in the struggle and family members of those killed and affected during the violence unleashed on Singur. She had also sown the first seeds for the new crops with her own hand.

And now, Singur is going to witness its first Durga Puja festival after a momentous victory. A long and hard-fought struggle, laced with the blood and tears of hundreds of people, has come to an end. It’s time for celebration now. And celebrate they will.

Potato, onion, maize, paddy and other crops have been harvested. With the money earned from selling the crops, the people are making preparations for grand festivities – buying clothes and fire-crackers, building colourful pandals, creating idols decked up in finery, and so much more.

The good times have returned. And with the people of Singur too in spirit is the whole of Bengal, celebrating the revival of a people’s hopes and aspirations.

ফিরে পাওয়া জমির প্রথম ফসল দিয়ে ফের পুজোয় মেতে উঠেছে সিঙ্গুরবাসী

গ্রামের মানুষের ত্যাগ আর প্রার্থনায় সাড়া দিয়েছেন মা। টানা দশ বছর ধরে অবস্থান, ধর্না, অনশন ও আদালতে দীর্ঘ লড়াইয়ের পর সর্বোচ্চ আদালতের নির্দেশে ঘরের লক্ষ্মী অর্থাৎ জমি ফিরে পেয়েছেন অনিচ্ছুকসহ সমস্ত চাষিরা। হারানো জমির পাশাপাশি পেয়েছেন ক্ষতিপূরণের টাকাও। আদালতের রায়ের পর কেড়ে নেওয়া জমি হাতে পেয়ে আগের মতোই সোনার ফসল ঘরে তুলেছেন চাষিরা। এবছর প্রথম উৎপাদিত সেই ফসল দিয়ে মাতৃ আরাধনার জন্য প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছেন সিঙ্গুরের বেড়াবেড়ি গ্রামের মানুষ। ইতিমধ্যেই গ্রামের শীতলামাতা শক্তি সংঘের উদ্যোগে একটি কাল্পনিক মন্দিরের আদলে মণ্ডপ গড়ে তোলার কাজ চলছে। টাটাদের কারখানার জন্য জমি দখলের আগের দিনগুলোর মতোই পুজোর কটা দিন নতুন পোশাকে নিজেদের সাজিয়ে আনন্দোৎসবে মেতে ওঠার প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছে সিঙ্গুর।

বেড়াবেড়ি গ্রামে প্রায় ২৬০টি পরিবারের বসবাস। জমি অধিগ্রহণের আগে ধুমধাম করে এখানে থিমের দুর্গাপুজো হত। ২০০৬ সালে পুজোর আগেই সিঙ্গুরে টাটাদের জন্য জমি অধিগ্রহণের প্রক্রিয়া শুরু হয়। পুজোর আগেই আন্দোলনের সময়ে ২৫ সেপ্টেম্বর রাতে বিডিও অফিসে আলো নিভিয়ে দিয়ে নির্বিচারে লাঠিপেটা করে পুলিশ। পুজোর আগে জমি হাতছাড়া হওয়ায় গ্রামের মানুষের সব অভিমান গিয়ে পড়েছিল মা দুর্গার উপরে। তাই জমি ফিরে না পাওয়া পর্যন্ত পুজো করবেন না বলে শপথ নিয়েছিলেন সিঙ্গুরের বেড়াবেড়ি গ্রামের অনিচ্ছুক চাষিরা। সেই শপথ বজায় রেখে পুজোর সময়ে নতুন পোশাক, ঢাকের কাঠি, আলোর রোশনাই ও আতসবাজি থেকে নিজেদের সরিয়ে রেখেছিলেন গ্রামের মানুষ।

বেড়াবেড়ি দুর্গাপুজো কমিটির অন্যতম সদস্য তথা জেলা পরিষদের বন ও ভূমি কর্মাধ্যক্ষ মানিক দাস বলেন, জমি জোর করে নেওয়ার পর প্রথমে অভিমানে পুজো বন্ধ করে দিয়েছিলাম। কিন্তু, পরে দু’বছর ধরে অনাড়ম্বরভাবে পুজো করে মায়ের কাছে জমি ফেরত পাওয়ার আবেদন করেছি। গ্রামের মানুষের সেই আবেদনে মা সাড়া দিয়েছেন। জমি ফেরত পাওয়ার পর আলু, সরষে, ধান, পিয়াজসহ বিভিন্ন ধরনের ফসল আমরা ঘরে তুলেছি। তাই এবার আমরা ফিরে পাওয়া জমিতে ফলানো সোনার ফসল দিয়েই মায়ের পুজোর প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছি। পুজো কমিটির সভাপতি সহদেব দাস বলেন, আন্দোলনের আগে আমরা যেভাবে পুজো করতাম, এবার গ্রামে উৎসবের সেই মেজাজ ফিরিয়ে আনার চেষ্টা করছি। গ্রামের বাসিন্দা পারমিতা দাস বলেন, মা আমাদের কাতর মিনতিতে সাড়া দিয়েছেন বলেই আমরা জমির পাশাপাশি ক্ষতিপূরণের টাকাও পেয়েছি। তাই ফিরে পাওয়া জমির প্রথম ফসল দিয়ে পুজো দেওয়ার জন্য টাকা তুলে রেখেছি।
