State Govt increasing tourism potential of north Bengal with numerous projects
The Bengal Government has decided on a series of projects for the Darjeeling Hills, centred in and around Mirik.
A ropeway with a cable car system would be constructed adjacent to Sumendu Lake, popularly known as Mirik Lake. Tourists would be able to get a magnificent view of the beautiful lake and its surroundings from the ropeway.
The cleaning of the lake is almost over. This was another major project taken up. The lake’s surrounding would be beautified by planting grass, creating a beautiful green carpet.
Then, roads leading to and from Mirik are being repaired and widened to accommodate the increasing number of tourists.
Another project that would be implemented in Mirik is tea tourism. The State Government already has a Tea Tourism Policy, one of the landmark initiatives for the economy of the Hills region.
There is a problem regarding access to Mirik, as after 3 pm, cars do not travel to Mirik. To overcome this, the Tourism Department will be setting up small hotels on vacant land inside tea estates near Mirik. Three estates – Thurbo, Okayti and Gopaldhara – have been selected, with work to begin with Thurbo Tea Estate.
Another tourism project has been undertaken by the government – to connect Gajoldoba Tourist Hub to Siliguri.
Gajoldoba Tourist Hub is a major project that the government is developing to increase the inflow of tourists to north Bengal. With the construction of the bridge, an easier link would be made with the city of Siliguri, the biggest urban centre in the northern part of the state.
The bridge will directly connect Gajoldoba with National Highway (NH) 31 from Siliguri. It will be constructed across the canal the runs from the barrage in Gajoldoba to the Teesta river. A road of around 7 km will be constructed from the bridge in the Jalpaiguri side to Otlabari, where it will connect with NH 31.
In Gajoldoba, the government has taken up a project to construct around 30 cottages for tourists. Some ofthem are already complete. There are also plans to develop an orchid hub, a golf course and a helipad in the area.
The Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress Government has done much to bring the Hills back to normalcy. The people there are happy. With the ever-growing number of tourists, the economy of the region is witnessing a healthy surge.
উত্তরবঙ্গকে কেন্দ্র করে একগুচ্ছ পর্যটন পরিকল্পনা রাজ্য সরকারের
পর্যটন দপ্তরের উদ্যোগে এক বছরের মধ্যে আত্মপ্রকাশ করতে চলেছে সম্পূর্ণ নতুন মিরিক ডেস্টিনেশন। মুখ্য ভূমিকায় অবশ্যই মিরিকের বিখ্যাত সুমেন্দু লেক। সঙ্গে মেঘের রাজ্যে বিচরণের জন্য চা বাগানে রাত্রিবাস। তৈরি হচ্ছে পর্যটন দপ্তরের কটেজও। সেখানেই হাত-পা ছড়িয়ে দিব্যি ছুটির কদিন রেখে আসতে পারেন।
পুরসভা সাহায্যের হাত বাড়িয়ে দেওয়ায় পর্যটন দপ্তর ঢেলে সাজাবে মিরিককে। দার্জিলিং, গ্যাংটকের সঙ্গে স্বতন্ত্র পর্যটন কেন্দ্র হিসেবে এটি যেন এক সারিতে উচ্চারিত হয় তার জন্য সবরকম পদক্ষেপ করা হবে।
প্রথম উদ্যোগ হিসেবে রাজ্য ও জিটিএ-র তরফ থেকে মিরিকের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ রক্ষার সব কটি রাস্তাকে চওড়া ও সারাই করে যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থাকে এ ওয়ান ক্যাটেগরিতে নিয়ে যাওয়ার কাজ শুরু হয়েছে। এই কাজ শেষ হলেই কেন্দ্রিক সৌন্দর্যকে বাড়ানোর কাজ শুরু হবে।
সুমেন্দু লেক সংস্কারের কাজ প্রায় শেষ। সবুজায়ন করা হয়েছে লেকের চারিদিকে। নতুন করে ঘাস লাগিয়ে নেড়া মাঠে ঘোড়ার আদর্শ বিচরণক্ষেত্র তৈরি করা হয়েছে। এর পাশাপাশি তৈরি হবে একটি রোপওয়ে। রোপওয়েটি মিরিককে কেন্দ্র করে তা তৈরি করা হবে। পর্যটক আকর্ষণ বাড়াতে একটি কেবল কার সার্ভিস চালু হবে মিরিকে।
মিরিকের সবেচেয়ে কাছে থার্বো চা বাগান, ওকাইতি চা বাগান, গোপালধারা চা বাগানগুলির মধ্যে চা অনুৎপাদক খালি জমি খুঁজে তাতে কটেজ তৈরি করা হবে। তবে থার্বো বাগানটিই মিরিক লাগোয়া হওয়ায় এটিকেই পাখির চোখ করছে পর্যটন দপ্তর।
ওই বাগানগুলির জমির চরিত্র বদল করিয়ে তারপর তাতে কাজ করা সম্ভব বলে মিরিক পুরসভা সূত্রে জানানো হয়েছে। প্রায় পাঁচ একর জমির প্রয়োজন রয়েছে সমস্ত পরিকল্পনা রূপায়ণ করতে। রাজ্যের উদ্যোগে ইতিমধ্যেই মিরিকের চরিত্র বদলাতে শুরু করেছে। এক বছর পরে মিরিক পাহাড়ের অন্যতম গন্তব্য হবে।
এছাড়া গাজোলডোবা ট্যুরিস্ট হাবের যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা আরও উন্নত করতে, একটি সেতু নির্মাণ করা হবে যা শিলিগুড়ি থেকে সরাসরি গাজোলডোবা পর্যন্ত যোগ করবে। এই সেতু নির্মাণ হলে তা সরাসরি জাতীয় সড়ক ৩১ এর সঙ্গে যোগ হবে শিলিগুড়িতে। গাজোলডোবাকে আন্তর্জাতিক মানের ট্যুরিজম কেন্দ্র হিসেবে গড়ে তুলতে রাজ্য সরকার সবরকম প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা নিচ্ছে।
