Major boost to fishing infrastructure in Bengal
The State Fisheries Department has endeavoured to give every manner of infrastructural help to fishermen. The fishermen’s cooperatives have been running lodges belonging to the Department.
Fish research laboratories: The Department is setting up block-level laboratory-cum-training centres for testing water and soil of waterbodies to determine suitability for pisciculture. So far, 308 have been built, and another 25 have been sanctioned.
Storage infrastructure: As part of the ‘cold chain scheme’, the Department has been sanctioned money for the construction of cold storages and, through the distribution of bicycles with insulated boxes, the development of transit and terminal markets, including retail outlets. An ice plant at Petuaghat Harbour and an ice plant and fish market at Digha Mohona have been constructed by the Department.
Tourist lodges: The Department is helping in the development of tourism in Bengal by successfully running tourist lodges belonging to it, through West Bengal State Fishermen’s Cooperative Federation Limited (better known as Benfish), State Fisheries Development Corporation Limited and West Bengal Fisheries Corporation Limited.
Fishing harbours and fish landing centres: Under the Department, there are seven minor fishing harbours and 13 fish landing centres. The entry channel at Kakdwip Harbour has been completed. Benfish has constructed modernised fish markets in Kalyani (Nadia district), Bolpur (Birbhum district), Uluberia (Howrah district) and Gangarampur (Dakshin Dinajpur district).

২০১১ সালে ক্ষমতায় আসার পর মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের নেতৃত্বাধীন তৃণমূল সরকার রাজ্যের সার্বিক উন্নয়নে ব্রতী হয়েছেন। বিভিন্ন দপ্তরের সঙ্গে তাল মিলিয়ে জোর দেওয়া হয়েছে মৎস্য দপ্তরেও। নেওয়া হয়েছে প্রচুর পদক্ষেপ, পাল্টে ফেলা হয়েছে পুরো পরিকাঠামো। আনা হয়েছে নতুন যন্ত্রপাতি, প্রযুক্তি।
রাজ্যে ব্লক স্তরে গবেষণাগার তথা প্রশিক্ষণ কেন্দ্র গড়ে তোলার উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে দপ্তর। এর মাধ্যমে জল ও মাটি পরীক্ষা করা হবে যাতে বৈজ্ঞানিক ভাবে মাছ চাষ করা যায়। এখনও পর্যন্ত ৩০৮টি এরকম গবেষণাগার গড়ে তোলা হয়েছে। ২০১৭-১৮ আর্থিক বর্ষে ২৫টি ব্লক স্তরে গবেষণাগার তথা প্রশিক্ষণ কেন্দ্র গড়ে তোলা হয়েছে।
২০১৭-১৮ সালে দপ্তর হিমঘর নির্মাণের মাধ্যমে পরিকাঠামো উন্নয়নে জোর দিয়েছে; এর জন্য বরাদ্দ হয়েছে ৩ কোটি টাকা। এছাড়া কোল্ড চেন প্রকল্পের অধীনে আরও ৩ কোটি টাকা বরাদ্দ হয়েছে ট্রান্সিট ও টার্মিনাল বাজার ও রিটেল আউটলেট তৈরী করতে। ইন্সুলেটেড বাক্স সম্বলিত সাইকেলও বিতরণ করা হয়েছে।
পর্যটন ক্ষেত্রে আরও উন্নতির লক্ষ্যে পরিকাঠামো আরও মজবুত করা হচ্ছে। বেনফিশ, স্টেট ফিশারিজ ডেভেলপমেন্ট কর্পোরেশন লিমিটেড, ওয়েস্ট বেঙ্গল ফিশারিজ কর্পোরেশন লিমিটেড তাদের নিজেদের ট্যুরিস্ট লজগুলিকে দক্ষতার সঙ্গে রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ করে চলেছে।
এই মুহূর্তে রাজ্যে ৭টি মাইনর ফিশিং হারবার ও ১৩টি ফিশ ল্যান্ডিং সেন্টার আছে। আইস প্ল্যান্টের নির্মাণ ও দীঘার মোহনায় মাছের বাজারের নির্মাণ সম্পন্ন হয়েছে। এ ছাড়াও, বেনফিশ আধুনিক মাছের বাজার তৈরী করেছে নদীয়ার কল্যাণীতে, বীরভূমের বোলপুরে, হাওড়ার উলুবেড়িয়া ও দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুরের গঙ্গারামপুরে।
বেনফিশ বিভিন্ন জেলায় হিমঘর তৈরী করেছে। যেমন, বীরভূমের বোলপুরে, দক্ষিণ দিনাজপুরের গঙ্গারামপুরে, পূর্ব মেদিনীপুরের কাঁথি, নদীয়ার কল্যাণীতে, দক্ষিণ ২৪ পরগণার কাকদ্বীপ, ডায়মন্ড হারবারে।
