Jangalmahal tourism circuit is thriving, thanks to Mamata Banerjee’s policies

The situation in Jangalmahal now is a far cry from what it was during the Left Front rule. As a result of the policies of the Trinamool Congress Government, there is peace. One of the primary ways in which Jangalmahal has renewed itself is through the promotion of tourism.

Hundreds of tourists now visit the popular sites as well as the unexplored locales in Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts.

Promoting the Jangalmahal tourism circuit, which includes areas of Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura and Purulia, the State Government is not only putting up infrastructural facilities like cable cars, heritage hotels and lodges, but also inviting private investments to be a part of the endeavour.

The West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDC) has started overnight packages where tourists are taken around unexplored areas of Jhargram district like Belpahari, Banspahari, Kankrajhor, Laljal and others.

The WBTDC is also promoting trekking and other adventure tourism in Kankrajhor.

The Forest Department has taken an initiative to set up one hundred homestays in Jhargram. The forest-dominated district of Jhargram has a lot of potential in tourism and homestays are a major enabler towards fulfilling that potential.

In Paschim Medinipur, the government has given focus on three places – Karambera Fort in Gaganeshwar village in Keshiary block, Karnagarh in Salboni block and Gongoni in Garhbeta block.

Karambera Fort shows signs of the architecture of ancient Odisha as well as of the Mughal period. Karnagarh is well-known for the remnants of a huge stone fort. Karna from the Mahabharata once supposedly ruled this place, and hence the name.

Gongoni is famous for its natural river canyon – a fascinating wide gorge of red soil on the banks of the River Silabati. The canyon is locally known as Gongoni Danga or Gongoni Khola.

Dropout rate among girls decreased due to Kanyashree: Bangla CM

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today chaired a review meeting on education sector today. The meeting was attended by vice-chancellors of 30 universities. Principals of several colleges were also present. After the meeting, the CM said that it was a productive discussion.

Addressing the press, she said, “The number of admissions to schools has increased from 13 lakh to 20 lakh. There has been an increase of 73% (from 5.62 lakh to 9.74 lakh) in the admission of girl students. This is a matter of pride.”

The CM opined that Kanyashree has helped bring the drop-out rate among girls down. “They are getting scholarships to pursue higher education. They are achieving success in life,” she added.

It may be mentioned that, since independence, till 2011, only 12 universities existed in Bangla. In the last seven years, the government has set up 28 new universities, and 10 more are in the pipeline. 50 new colleges have been set up in Bangla in the last seven years.

The government has achieved 100% mid-day meal coverage. Toilets have been constructed in 99% schools for girls. Additionally, 1.8 lakh additional classrooms, 7000 primary and upper primary schools have been constructed.

The government today formed an umbrella committee today, consisting of the Education Minister, Higher Education Secretary, vice-chancellors of Jadavpur University, University of Calcutta and Presidency University. They have been asked to share their expertise with the universities in the districts.

“We are also giving due importance to other languages. Colleges have been set up in Hindi and Urdu. We have started classes in Ol Chiki language till Class XI. We are forming the syllabus for Rajbongshi language,” the CM said.

Mamata Banerjee also said, “We have taken several initiatives for part-time teachers. We have taken measures one set of contractual teachers; we will take initiatives for others too. Salary of parateachers has been increased’ we have started schemes for them.”

Taking on the UGC for the shortage of funds, the CM said, “We have received many complaints. Funds for research scholars are also pending. Instead of funding they are issuing fatwas on behalf of Centre – do this and do that.”

Bangla CM proposes internships for college passouts to balance teacher shortage

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today chaired a review meeting on education sector today. The meeting was attended by vice-chancellors of 30 universities. Principals of several colleges were also present. After the meeting, the CM said that it was a productive discussion.

The CM said that there are many areas where there are many teachers. On the other hand, there are areas where the number of teachers is less. There is a need to maintain balance.

To meet this challenge, she proposed that Class V be moved to primary level. Since there are many teachers at primary level, this move will mitigate the problem to an extent.

For areas, like Sundarbans, Jangalmahal or Dooars, the CM proposed appointing college passouts as interns to solve the issue of availability of teachers. They will get a certificate. Based on performance, they will also get priority during teachers’ recruitment.

“The interns will be given an honourarium of Rs 2,000 (for primary level schools) and Rs 2,500 (for secondary level schools),” the CM announced, adding that finer details of this proposal would need to be worked out.

Bangla Govt to bring more unorganised sector workers under SSY

The State Labour Department is undertaking a massive awareness campaign to bring more workers from the unorganised sector under the ambit of Samajik Suraksha Yojana (Social Security Scheme).

At the Sramik Melas (Labour Fairs) being organised in all the districts of Bangla all through January, there will be camps for enrolment. The department will also conduct door-to-door campaigns.

According to the Labour Minister, more than 1 crore people have been brought under the SSY. The Trinamool Congress Government, in seven years (from 2011 to 2018) has allocated Rs 113 crore for the scheme. Compared to this, the Left Front Government, in the eleven years from 2000 to 2011, spent a meagre Rs 9 crore on similar schemes for unorganised sector workers.

It may be mentioned that the Trinamool Congress Government had merged five schemes into one in April 2017 and named the scheme as Samajik Suraksha Yojana. The convergence of the schemes has benefited people from different unorganised sectors and self-employed youths.

Under the scheme, unorganised workers are getting financial assistance of Rs 20,000 per annum for any ailment. The amount extends up to Rs 60,000 per annum in case of hospitalisation. There is also entitlement for provident fund after a worker attains the age of 60.
