Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago address to be included in school curriculum

The State Education Department has decided to distribute booklets containing Swami Vivekananda’s address at the Parliament of World’s Religion in Chicago among students.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Sampriti Saptaha that the State Government had organised to celebrate 125 years of Swami Vivekananda’s address in the Parliament of World’s Religion in Chicago, State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said: “Booklets containing the speech of Swami Vivekananda will be distributed among school-goers free of cost. The move has been taken as a character-building programme.”

At the same time, Chatterjee said details related to the life, works and messages of social reformers will also be included in the textbooks. The expert committee will be discussing the same and will take the decision in this connection. The committee will finalise the books where such contents would be introduced. They will also decide on the class in which these books would be launched.

“After the committee finalises all the aspects in this connection, it will be placed before Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee,” he said.

The minister added, “In the past four decades, no steps were taken to circulate messages of the social reformers among the masses. Now, the chief minister has taken up this initiative.”

Vivek Chetana Utsav to pay homage to Swami Vivekananda being observed across Bangla

The Bangla Government is celebrating the 156th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda in association with the Ramakrishna Math and Mission through the three-day long Vivek Chetana Utsav, from January 10-12.

All the 341 blocks, 117 municipalities, six municipal corporations of the State, the 144 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) and all the district headquarters are celebrating Vivek Chetana Utsav through processions, exhibitions, symposiums and quiz competitions on the life of Swami Vivekananda, and debates, exhibition football matches and other cultural programmes.

The State Youth Welfare Department is organising the festival. It may be noted that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had declared January 12 as a State holiday from 2012.

Vivek Tirtha – A tribute to the great saint

Vivek Tirtha, named after Swami Vivekananda, has been planned to be one of the premier institutes of the country, comprising of a centre for value education, a school of languages, a computer institute, a digital library and more. It is being set up in New Town. The formal name of the place is Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centre for Human Excellence and Social Sciences.

This top-class centre of education is being set up on land given by the Trinamool Congress Government. In fact, it was Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who had laid the foundation stone of the institute, on November 11, 2014, and had also named it ‘Vivek Tirtha’.

The project will cost about Rs 172 crore. Five acres has been allotted beside Eco Park.

The centre will have a 10-storey building to house the administrative office, seminar halls and an auditorium, with a capacity of 1,400. The main building will be designed after the Chicago Art Institute, where Swami Vivekananda had delivered his famous speech on September 11, 1893.

There will be four other buildings, to be named after four famous foreign disciples of Swami Vivekananda – Sister Nivedita, JJ Goodwin, Ole Sara Bull and Josephine McLeod.

An important feature of the programmes proposed to be offered by the Centre of Human Excellence include a retreat for professionals and people from all walks of life like sweepers, rickshaw pullers, labourers and shopkeepers. There will also be a course on citizenship training and value education for government and corporate employees. There will be courses on how to overcome fear and failure.

Abhishek Banerjee dares Amit Shah to contest from Bangla

All India Trinamool Youth Congress National President and party’s MP Abhishek Banerjee on Friday challenged the National President of BJP, Amit Shah, to contest from any seat in Bangla. He said, he will ensure that Shah is defeated.

Addressing a public rally at Shyambazar in Kolkata as a preparatory meeting for the mega Brigade rally of the party scheduled on January 19, Banerjee said that the Brigade rally will deliver the clarion call to oust the BJP from the Centre in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Abhishek was nostalgic while addressing this rally. “In 1997, days before the formation of Trinamool Congress, a public meeting was held in this same venue. We still get goosebumps while talking about that meeting,” he said.

The youth leader said, “India is at a juncture when autocratic and dictatorial powers are at the helm of affairs of the country. They are destroying the nation. The only political party which has the gumption of standing up to them is Trinamool Congress. We cannot be cowed down by intimidation tactics. We will fight on. We will never bow our heads.”

Abhishek maintained that several national leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, Akhilesh Yadav, Stalin, Shatrughan Sinha, Farooq Abdullah and others will attend the rally to strengthen Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s political fight to show the exit door to the BJP and establish a secular government at the Centre.

Abhishek also took the opportunity to slam the BJP’s plan of Rath Yatra programme in Bengal. “In the name of Rath Yatra, they have brought a 7-star AC luxury bus from Delhi. We have heard of Rath Yatra of Shri Jagannath and Shri Krishna. But in the name of Rath, they will be riding a luxury bus. “They cannot compete with us in terms of development. We have fulfilled the promises that we made before coming to power,” he said.

He also said, “It is our resolve to uproot communal BJP from power at Centre, just like we ousted the CPI(M) from power in Bangla in 2011. We are ready to lay down our lives, but we will not bow our heads down.”

Drawing similarities between Netaji and Mamata Banerjee, he said the latter’s battle cry “Delhi Chalo” is a reminder of Subhas Bose’s slogan.

CBI being misused by BJP for political gains: Mamata Banerjee

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for political gains.

“The CBI has been repeatedly misused by the BJP, which is trying to use the probe agency for political gains and turn it into ‘His Master’s Voice’,” she said, referring to the fiasco surrounding Alok Verma, the former director of the agency who was removed from his position by a high-powered committee on Thursday.

“The BJP is destroying institutions like the CBI and the RBI,” she added.

She also said that ‘super emergency’ is going on in the country. Accusing the Centre of interfering in State’s affairs, the CM said that the federal structure was being demolished.

On the NRC issue, she said, ” I have no problem about the safety and security of the country. But if you want to throw out genuine people, the real citizens become homeless. In Bengal, everyone from other states are staying. Any Indian can stay and work in any state.”

The CM added, “What happened in Gujarat? Biharis, UPites have been chased away. In Assam, in the name of NRC, Biharis, UPites, Tamilians, have been chased out. Even 23 lakh Bengali Hindus as well. All this shows that the intention is very bad.”

She also said, “We are with the people of Assam and Tripura. Whenever helpless people from there require help, we will give it.”

Centre did not construct Concrete Bridge at Gangasagar, despite promise: CM

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today visited the camps for pilgrims, who are going to Gangasagar. She said, “Irrespective of religion, caste, creed or language, we all work together. This is the culture of our State.”

It may be mentioned that earlier pilgrims had to pay a tax to visit Gangasagar. It was abolished after Trinamool came to power.

The CM said, “When I visited Gangasagar in the past, it was in shambles. There was no infrastructure. We have undertaken massive renovation projects. We have renovated the temple complex, constructed cottages for tourists and pilgrims, new roads, renovated the ghats. We have constructed youth hostels. Earlier going to Gangasagar was difficult, but now we are taking care of the security and comfort of tourists and pilgrims.”

The Centre has not kept its promised of constructing an iron bridge at Gangasagar. Expressing her angst, the CM said: “We had asked the Centre to construct a port at Tajpur. They agreed to do so, but wanted 74% stake. We were ready to give it, if they built a concrete or iron bridge at Gangasagar. Four years have passed, but nothing has happened. We have decided that we will build the bridge on our own. It will cost Rs 1,500 crore, and will take time. But we will do it for the convenience of people.”

Bangla CM inaugurates Sampriti Flyover

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today inaugurated the State’s longest flyover. About 7 km long, this flyover will connect Batanagar with Jinjira Bazar in Maheshtala Vidhan Sabha constituency. A journey, which earlier would take almost an hour, can now be completed in an hour.

The CM inaugurated this flyover via remote-control from Maidan. Abhishek Banerjee, under whose Lok Sabha constituency this flyover is located, was present at Batanagar for the inauguration.

The Budge Budge Trunk Road below the flyover will be maintained by KMDA. Taratala Industrial Estate, CESC Thermal Power Station at Budge Budge, and a public-sector oil company’s depot will be among the beneficiaries of this flyover.

Earlier the Kamalgazi flyover brought Narendrapur, Rajpur, Baruipur on fast track. It is expected that the people of Budge Budge, Bata, Maheshtala, Pujali will be immensely benefited with the construction of this flyover. Nearly 10 lakh people will benefit.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “We have allocated Rs 18,000 crore infrastructural projects. Several other flyovers like Maa flyover and Kamalgazi flyover have already come up. When I was the Railway Minister I also started East-West Metro project”

Two wheelers and four-wheelers and trucks carrying vegetables will be exempted from toll tax, the CM announced. She said, Swami Vivekananda always preached about universal brotherhood. Keeping those ideals in mind, the flyover has been named Sampriti (Harmony) Flyover.

Abhishek Banerjee said, “The earlier government would only blow their trumpet, even for laying a brick. We silently complete the task we undertake. Today we have inaugurated this flyover, tomorrow we will begin the work on the road. I am sure the work will be completed within a month.”

Is Modi babu trying to stop Durga Puja in Bangla: CM

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several projects at North 24 Parganas district today. She laid the foundation stone of Harichand-Guruchand University on the occasion.

While speaking, she attacked the Centre on a range of issues, including crop and health insurance. She also slammed the Centre for IT notice to Durga Puja committees in Kolkata.

Highlights of her speech:

We give one sapling to parents when a baby is born. That tree will be worth a lot when that baby grows up; this will make their future secure.

Compare the work done since independence, till May, 2011, with the volume of work done in the last seven and half years.

People are getting rice at Rs 2/kg, newborn babies are getting saplings.

Girls are not a burden on our families. They are our assets. We have empowered 57 lakh girls through our Kanyashree programme.

We have removed the income ceiling for eligibility of Kanyashree scheme. Every girl is Kanyashree now.

The Centre has recently announced 10% reservation. The income ceiling is Rs 8 lakh per annum. I want to ask you, how many people come under this category? Those coming from humble backgrounds, those belonging to farmer or labourer families, the young generation will be deprived. The poor will be neglected.

There is a Supreme Court order prohibiting more than 50% reservation. Quotas are earmarked for particular communities only. They can’t provide jobs, and are talking about reservation. This is hogwash. They are deceiving you.

2 crore people have lost their jobs in 2018, during Modi Babu’s PMship. In Bangla, we have reduced unemployment by 40%. We want our young generation to get employment.

As elections are approaching, few people with vested interests are out their to get your votes. They are sending letters to people they have done everything. And what are States doing, then? The division of powers between Centre and States is clear.

In the name of demonetisation, they have looted your money. They have soured India’s relationship with all countries, including America, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Is it not the Centre’s job to strengthen the country’s defence system? What did they do? Rafale deal. They have not done anything. They are not capable of doing any job. And now they are sending letters claiming everything has been done by Modi Babu.

What is the job of the State? Education is a State subject. We have given scholarships – like Sikshashree, Kanyashree, Swami Vivekananda scholarship, minority scholarship – to students.

It is the State which looks after the farmers. And the banks, which give loans to farmers with high interest, are run by Centre. It is Centre’s fault.

Who provides healthcare? The State Government. It is a State subject. Centre has no role to play.

Rural development through panchayats is also a State subject. Law and order is also a State subject. Centre has no jurisdiction here.

They have created a logo which resembles their party symbol. Just imagine!

80% of the funds for crop insurance scheme are borne by the State Government. They pay only 20%. We have paid Rs 625 crore last year as the premium for crop insurance. And they have the gall to send letters claiming credit for the scheme.

More than 12,000 farmers have committed suicide across the country, due to the burden of bank loans. And in Bangla, we are proud of our farmers. We have abolished khajna tax and mutation fees on agricultural land.

Our Government have decided to give Rs 5,000 to farmers per acre of land, in two installments annually. If a farmer, between the age of 18-60 passes away we will give Rs 2 lakh to their families.

We have started a new project ‘dhan din, cheque nin’. Farmers will get cheques immediately after they sell their paddy at government procurement centres.

We provide a subsidy of Rs 27 on the rice that we distribute at Rs 2/kg. We have given Sikshashree scholarships to 58 lakh SC/ST students.

More than 52 lakh Kanyashree girls have received scholarships. Now that the ceiling has been removed, additional 50 lakh girls will benefit. We have also extended the scheme to universities. We have laid the foundation stone for Kanyashree University.

A long-standing demand of the Matua community has been fulfilled today. We have laid the foundation stone for Harichand-Guruchand University. The university will have a campus at Krishnanagar. Tehatta Stadium will be known as ‘Guruchand-Harichand Stadium’.

We have set up development boards for Matuas, Namashudras, Rajbongshis, Kamtapuris and other communities in Darjeeling Hills.

The State used to bear 50% of the cost of health insurance scheme. We have withdrawn from the scheme yesterday. We already provide healthcare for free at hospitals. We already have Swasthya Sathi scheme. We had an agreement with Centre that since Swasthya Sathi was started earlier, the name of the scheme will remain the same. But they indulged in politics, without informing the State.

Before elections, they said everyone will get Rs 15 lakh in their bank accounts. They promised to bring back black money. They hoodwink people with such false promises before elections. This is just cheating people. This never happened before.

They are altering history. Names of institutions and places are being changed. Doordarshan has become BJP-darshan. Only politics is being featured.

They are playing divisive politics on the basis of religion. Our religion is centuries old. We all know about the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, We all know about the Quran. We perform Durga Puja. We perform Kali Puja. We perform Chamunda Puja. We perform Santoshi Ma’s Puja and many other such pujas.

We worship Guru Nanak, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Lokenath Thakur, Thakur Anukul Chandra. We participate in festivals of all communities, including the Jains, Parsis or the Buddhists. We celebrate occasions like the Christmas, Johar festivals and every other such things. You don’t need to teach us all these.

In Bangla, people from all castes and creeds, all religious sects celebrate the Durga Puja. Now the Left has allied with the BJP. They are now sending notices to the Durga Puja committees and asking for their expenditure details as they need to pay income taxes. Do people know the details of how much money you have looted during demonetisation? How much money has been deposited as income tax?

There are many trusts and temples across India. There are religious places like the Tirupati, the Tarakeshwar, the Furfura Sharif, the Golden Temple, the temple of Balaji, the temple of Ganapati, the temple of Jagannath Dev. Will they pay income tax? The organisers of the Durga Puja do not do it for their profit. They organise a festival for the people. It is a festival for the community. Unity of all religions is harmony. These are all non-profit organisations. They do not need to pay income taxes.

Secondly, a Puja is a religious ritual – why should income tax be paid for it? Thirdly, it is the common people who give donation to organise these Pujas. The political parties and the Central Government do not pay a penny. Our State Government has given Rs 10,000 to the clubs for community development. You are trying to get money from these clubs. Are you trying to stop the Durga Pujas? If you are trying to stop the Durga Pujas, remember, we will not keep quiet. I will urge all the clubs to unite and protest against this dictum.

How much income tax is being collected from the real thieves? The real hoodlums are all staying in foreign countries while are clubs are being harassed for income tax. Now, will they ask for income tax for performing Roza during the Ramzan? Will they ask for income tax for cooking? Will they ask for income tax from journalists for taking pictures? People will pay income tax while they will make an income by looting the money of the masses. This is how the country is running.

I think the real ‘jatra’ should be that one where truth is being spread. I am not telling you to perform a political ‘jatra’. I have come to know that some are performing political ‘jatra’. A film called ‘The Accidental PM’ has been released before the elections. Everybody is then an ‘Accidental PM’. I could not understand the meaning!
I am no longer in the Congress party. There is a difference between them and us. I have formed a separate party – Trinamool Congress. But in my view, facts should not be changed and what has been done is not right. I have to say that those who are creating a drama before the elections regarding ‘The Accidental PM’ should watch out if any film by the name ‘Disastrous PM’ is released. It may be made in near future too. There is always an eye for an eye. Nobody spares the other.

They should see their face on the mirror. They cannot laugh, cannot speak. People are scared to see them. People think that Gabbar Singh will come! The same has happened with the CPIM. I am speaking this on the stage of the ‘jatra festival because people will understand this. Both you and I do politics. There is a difference between the politics we practice and what they do. How dare you throw bombs at school buses filled with students in order to enforce a bandh? I will say this a thousand times. Students are our future, They are our wealth. How could you throw bombs at school buses? What kind of politics is this?

We are experiencing a situation where a conspiracy is afoot to divide the country. A conspiracy is afoot to degrade people, to pit people go against one another.

Let there be light in Bengal. I wish that all of you stay blessed.
Keep faith. Keep trust. Keep your belief. I will ask all the public representatives to keep a watch so that people may get the benefits. Listen to the people. Help them. This place is like a home to me. I vist here quite regularly. A few days back, I came to the Matua Bari during the centenary celebration of the centenary of Baro Maa. Will see yo all again. Keep well.
