Bangla CM slams BJP’s politics of hate and discrimination

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today slammed the BJP for its politics of hate and discrimination. She was speaking at the Khelashree award ceremony. She said an atmosphere of fear prevailed in the country. CBI is hounding anyone who criticizes the BJP.

She also said that sting operations are being organised for money. From computers to internet, mobile phones to banks, even the privacy of people was under attack, she commented.

Highlights of her speech:

Industry is suffering due to GST and demonetisation. Sports and cultural fields are the biggest sufferers due to lack of sponsorship.

They are creating hurdles if someone wants to help the clubs. CBI is hounding them. People are afraid.

Do not be alarmed. Law will take its own course. They want to use state machinery for their political gain; this cannot be allowed.

They are spending money to conduct sting operations. They are recording personal conversations of friends, married couples, journalists, judges, industrialists.

From computers to internet, mobile phones to banks, even the privacy of people was under attack, she commented.

We organise Durga Puja, Christmas, Eid, Buddha Purnima. We all participate in festivities. This is our pride.

In Bangla, even if we have to starve, we will share our food with others. We want our youths to conquer the world. They are our pride.

We love our country and we will not allow anyone to divide it.

Someone’s surname cannot become their identity.

We believe in the ideology of Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Netaji. We believe in the philosophy of Rabindranath and Nazrul. We believe in unity and harmony.

Does anyone ever ask whether Gandhiji was Gujarati or Bengali? No. Gandhiji was Gandhiji. Someone who takes everyone along can become the leader of the nation.

This country is our pride. Bangla’s soil is the purest. Where else can you find soil enriched with such purity? This soil taught us the meaning of freedom. This soil taught us about the renaissance. We must maintain the dignity of this land.

Let the new generation come forward. Even Swami Vivekananda used to say that playing football is an easier way to reach God instead of reading the Gita. Sports promote an environment of harmony and culture.

The Indian Cricket team has seen the captaincy of Md Azharuddin as well as Sourav Ganguly. Have we ever questioned whether they are Bengali or Hindu or Muslim? We work together in harmony.

Those who are the citizens of this country cannot be called foreigners. We are all citizens of this country. We vote; we all hold bank accounts. If one cannot provide their birth certificate of their parents, are they not citizens of the country? This is what is happening in the country. New agendas are being chalked up to discriminate against the people.

To become a citizen (as per the new Bill), one must be considered as a foreigner for the first six years; only then can one receive citizenship. This is the provision. These are election tactics, don’t believe them. Till the time we are alive we cannot be intimidated with such tactics.

If something happens to one person, another will stand up for him/her. People’s court is the highest court. Let everyone live in peace.

Bangla CM inaugurates Jeevan Shakti – an app for blood banks

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently inaugurated an app named ‘Jeevan Shakti’ that will provide information regarding the availability of blood in government blood banks across Bangla.

The citizen-centric app has been developed by the State Health and Family Welfare Department. The mobile app will prove extremely handy for patients and their relatives, who will be able to trace donors and find out the availability of blood at the government-run blood banks.

The main features of the app are a list of donors in the State, along with their names, mobile numbers, addresses and the blood groups they belong to. Interested persons can enrol themselves in the app as potential donors.

Deaths due to road accidents – Kolkata the safest metro city

The latest data shows that Kolkata is the safest metro city in terms of occurrence of deaths due to road accidents. Kolkata Police officials say that the ‘Safe Drive Save Life’ (SDSL) campaign is primarily responsible for the success. This campaign is a brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In 2017, 318 fatal road accidents (that is, where there was loss of life) occurred in Kolkata, which caused the deaths of 329 people.

For Delhi the numbers for fatal road accidents and deaths were 1,565 and 1,584, respectively. For Mumbai, they were 467 and 490 respectively. For Chennai, 1,312 and 1,347, respectively, and for Bengaluru, 609 and 642, respectively.

Even in a small metro city like Pune, 360 fatal road accidents took place in 2017, which caused the deaths of 373 people.

Hence, Kolkata is head and shoulders above the rest of the cities, and SDSL campaign has had a major role to play in making roads safer and driving home awareness among the people.

State Govt’s earnest efforts result in spur in organ transplants

Thanks to the constant awareness campaigns being run by the State Health Department, Bangla has seen an unprecedented spur in organ transplants. The campaigns are run at both the government-run and private.

According to a senior official of the department, as many as 14 different cases of organ transplants have taken place in the State since July 2018. The transplants have taken place at both State-run and private institutions.

Organ transplants that have occurred here are essentially cadaver transplants. Organs were retrieved from patients who were declared brain dead by the competent authorities, transported to other hospitals and then transplanted on to patients in need.

The whole process is done through a register maintained by the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO), which holds names of potential receivers who urgently require organs.

It may be mentioned that transplant of an organ is heavily dependent on the initiative of the individuals rather than a comprehensive system. Hence, the campaigns of the Health Department are crucial.

Department officials are hopeful that the number of transplants in the State will go up in the future. The awareness campaigns have been intensified and a concrete roadmap is being created. The department will also tie up with non-governmental organisations (NGO) to carry out the campaign in a more effective manner.

Sundarini Naturals to open outlets for organic sweet

Sundarini Naturals, a food brand of the State Government’s Sundarban Cooperative Milk and Livestock Producers’ Union Ltd (SCMLPL), is going for further product diversification. It will soon come up with organic sweets, to be sold at two exclusive outlets it is setting up in Kolkata – at Kankurgachi and Maniktala.

The cooperative organisation was set up with the blessing of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2015 to give women of the Sundarbans an opportunity for an honest livelihood. In fact, the name ‘Sundarini Naturals’ itself was given by the Chief Minister.

Starting from milk and dairy products, the brand diversified into sweets, aromatic rice and pulses. And now it is the turn of organic sweets.

The two stores are planned to be inaugurated between January 26 and 28. They are being set up in public-private partnership (PPP) mode. App-based delivery to households from these two stores will also be introduced soon after.

According to a senior official of SCMLPL, depending on the demand for such sweets, more such ventures under PPP mode will be started.

The special attraction at the first two outlets will be the ‘fruit delite’ and ‘orange Bangla’ varieties of sweets, that will be priced at around Rs 25 to 30 per piece. The other attractions will be rosogolla, gulab jamun, rajbhog, roshomalai and sandesh varieties like golappatti, barfi and kalakand, priced Rs 12 upwards.

7 lakh and counting – Mother’s Wax Museum witnesses staggering footfall

The only one of its kind in eastern India, Mother’s Wax Museum (MWM) has become a star attraction for the people of Kolkata as well as tourists to the city. As of now, seven lakh people have visited this museum, since its opening four years ago.

This museum of wax statues of famous Indian people is the brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It was inaugurated by her on November 10, 2014. The place was named after the icon of Kolkata, Mother Teresa, and her wax figure finds a pride of place there.

There are wax figures of great personalities including social reformers of the 19th century, writers, poets and scientists, people from the field of entertainment and sports, as well as a Hollywood section and a children’s section with statues of popular cartoon characters. As photography is allowed inside the museum, people find a lot of joy in taking selfies with the statues.

People include Vidyasagar, Shri Ramakrishna, Maa Sarada, Swami Vivekananda, Sister Nivedita, Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, Satyajit Ray, Manna Dey, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Uttam Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Amitabh Bachchan, Mithun Chakrabarty, Shah Rukh Khan, Audrey Hepburn, Mr Bean (the popular character from British television), Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Kapil Dev, Diego Maradona and several others.

A new attraction is getting one’s own statues made. At the museum store, at a cost of Rs 2,000 per person, people can get their own faces made out of stone dust. As souvenirs, people can also buy miniatures of the wax figures and framed photographs of views of old Kolkata.
