Bengal Govt to make Sagar Island a ‘no-plastic zone’
The Bengal Government has decided to make Sagar Island – the venue for the annual Gangasagar Mela – a plastic-free zone.
The local administration has already initiated measures to ensure that pilgrims coming to the area for the Gangasagar Mela do not the litter the place or the water of the Ganga with non-biodegradable materials. The Gangasagar Panchayat Samity has also been roped in for the cause.
Two types of bins will be placed at the ghats – green for biodegradable garbage and yellow for non-biodegradable materials.
The administration has been distributing leaflets to the local people and the visitors to create awareness on the matter. Besides, microphones installed at five ghats in the area will be guiding people on garbage disposal.
The triangular Sagar Island, situated around 130 km from Kolkata, is separated from the mainland by the rivers Ganga and Muriganga on two sides and faces the Bay of Bengal on the third side. Lakhs of Hindu pilgrims gather here every year during Makar Sankranti to take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga and Bay of Bengal.

পরিবেশ দূষণ রুখতে এ বার দক্ষিণ ২৪ পরগনায় জেলা প্রশাসন ঠিক করেছেন, গঙ্গাসাগর মেলা ‘প্লাস্টিক ফ্রি জোন’ করা হবে।
এ বার গঙ্গাসাগর মেলায় ১ জানুয়ারি থেকে কোনও ব্যবসায়ী বা কোনও ব্যক্তি প্লাস্টিক ব্যবহার করতে পারছেন না। ‘গ্রিন ক্লিন গঙ্গাসাগর মেলা’য় যদি কেউ পলিথিন ব্যবহার করেন, তা হলে ২৫ হাজার টাকা জরিমানা বা ছ’মাসের জেল হতে পারে বলে জানিয়েছেন জেলাশাসক।
প্রশাসনের নির্দেশ, প্লাস্টিক ব্যাগের পরিবর্তে কাগজের ঠোঙা, মাটির ভাঁড় ও শালপাতা ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে। এ জন্য ব্যবসায়ীরা ইতিমধ্যে ১০ কুইন্ট্যাল কাগজের ঠোঙা বানাতে দিয়েছেন। কারণ, এই নির্দেশ শুধু মেলা চলাকালীন জারি হয়েছে তা নয়। মেলার পরেও এই নির্দেশ মেনেই চলতে হবে ব্যবসায়ীদের।
মেলা প্লাস্টিক ফ্রি ও গ্রিন ক্লিন করতে প্রশাসন থেকে কড়া নজরদারি চালানো হবে বলে জানানো হয়েছে। চলছে মাইকে প্রচার। এমনকী, ব্যানার, ফেস্টুনে লাগাতার প্রচার চলছে। বিভিন্ন ব্যবসায়ী সমিতির লোকজন নিয়ে সভা করা হচ্ছে। এমনকী, কাজে লাগানো হচ্ছে স্বনির্ভর গোষ্ঠীর সদস্য, অঙ্গনওয়াড়ি কর্মী ও আশা কর্মীদের। এ ছাড়াও প্রচারে রয়েছেন ভারত সেবাশ্রম সঙ্ঘের স্বেচ্ছাসেবকেরা। রয়েছে বিভিন্ন স্বেচ্ছাসেবী সংগঠনগুলি।
ভিন রাজ্যে থেকে আসা পুণ্যার্থীদের ওপর এই ব্যাপারে অতিরিক্ত নজরদারির কিছু পদক্ষেপ করা হচ্ছে। পরিস্কার-পরিচ্ছন্নতা রাখার জন্য এ বার স্বেচ্ছাসেবকের সংখ্যা অনেক বাড়ানো হয়েছে। তা ছাড়া, মেলার পূর্ব ও পশ্চিমদিকে বসানো থাকছে দু’টি বিশেষ ভ্যাট। আরও তিন হাজার ভ্যাট তৈরি করা হচ্ছে।
আগের বারের চেয়ে বাড়ানো হচ্ছে তিন হাজার শৌচাগারও। ২৪ ঘণ্টা পরিস্কার রাখার জন্য প্রায় ৭৫টি আবর্জনার ঠেলা গাড়ি রাখা হচ্ছে। যত্রতত্র প্লাস্টিক, সব্জি, মল পড়ে থাকতে দেখলেই তা সঙ্গে সঙ্গে পরিষ্কার করা হবে।
