West Bengal Fisheries Development Corporation Limited started farming new fish varieties which can survive even in saline waters outside the sea, which is rare for fish breeds. The market price of those edible fish is pocket friendly.
Add more variety to the Bengali fish platter, some new types of fish are being cultivated in Bengal. The cultivation by the state fisheries department has been started on an experimental basis. If successful, the cultivation would be opened up to all interested people.
The three varieties – silver pompano, changosh and cobia – are being cultivated through the method of cross-breeding. Silver pompano is akin to the ever-popular pomfret whereas changosh is a type of lobster. Pomfrets and lobsters have always been popular among Bengalis.
Cobia, which looks like catfish, is also a delicious fish, which was earlier not available in markets.
Silver pompano, as the name suggests, is silver in colour. It can acquire a weight of 450-550 gram within three months. The fish can weigh 7 kg by seven months. Popularly known as Chanduva in Andhra Pradesh, this rare variety of pomfret is not available even in sea waters now.
Farming of these fishes are being done at Alampur near Digha. A full-grown changosh can weigh about one-and-a-half kilograms. The delicious cobia, which can weigh between three to four kilograms, is also being cultivated near Digha, said a Fisheries Development Corporation officer.
All the three new varieties have a huge export potential too. The interest in cultivating these fish is expected to grow. The daily demand of the fish will also be under control.
নতুন প্রজাতির মাছ বাজারে আনতে চলেছে ম९স্য দপ্তর
রাজ্য ম९স্য দপ্তর নতুন নতুন প্রজাতির মাছ চাষ শুরু করেছে যেমন – যেসব মাছ সমুদ্রের বাইরের নোনা জলেও বেঁচে থাকতে পারে। এই মাছের দামও খুব সস্তা হবে।
আপাতত রাজ্য ম९স্য দপ্তর এই চাষ শুরু করেছে পরীক্ষামূলক ভাবে। এই পরীক্ষা সফল হলে, সকল আগ্রহী মানুষকে এর ব্যাপারে জানানো হবে।
সংকর পদ্ধতিতে তিন ধরনের মাছের চাষ করা হচ্ছে – ‘সিলভার পম্পানো’, ‘চ্যাঙস’ ও ‘কবিয়া’। ‘সিলভার পম্পানো’ আমাদের পরিচিত পমফ্রেট মাছের মতো, ‘চ্যাঙস’ তেমনই গলদা চিংড়ির সঙ্গে সদৃশ। পমফ্রেট ও গলদা চিংড়ি বাঙ্গালির খুবই প্রিয়।
‘কবিয়া’ একধরনের ক্যাট ফিস, যেটি খেতে খুবই সুস্বাদু, এর আগে বাজারে পাওয়া যেত না। ‘সিলভার পম্পানো’ তাঁর নামের মতই রুপালি রঙের হয় ও মাত্র তিন মাসে ৪৫০-৫৫০ গ্রাম ওজনের হয় ও সাত মাসে সাত কিলো ওজনের হতে পারে। এই মাছটি অন্ধ্রপ্রদেশে চন্দুভা নামে পরিচিত। এটি খুবই বিরল প্রজাতির মাছ যা সমুদ্রেও এখনও পাওয়া যায় না।
ম९স্য দপ্তরের এক আধিকারিক জানান, দিঘার কাছে আলমপুরে এই তিন ধরনের মাছ চাষ করা হচ্ছে। একটি ‘চ্যাঙস’ মাছ দেড় কিলো পর্যন্ত ওজন হতে পারে। সুস্বাদু ‘কবিয়া’ মোটামুটি ভাবে তিন থেকে চার কিলোর মধ্যে ওজন হয়।
এই তিন ধরনের মাছেরই রপ্তানি হওয়ার বিপুল পরিমান সম্ভবনা আছে। এই ধরনের মাছ চাষের উ९সাহ বাড়বে বলে আশা করা যায়। এই মাছগুলি বাজারে এলে দৈনিক মাছের চাহিদাও অনেকটা নিয়ন্ত্রনে আসবে।
