Shanta Chhetri speaks about the need for modernisation of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

Respected Chairman Sir, I would like to speak in my mother language, Nepali. Sir, it is a matter of pride for us that the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was accorded the UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as toy train, is an engineering marvel and is our proud heritage. It is a medium for enjoying the natural beauty of the Darjeeling Hills.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway began its journey in 1861 and the Darjeeling toy train is one of the few railway services in the Hills. Tourists who visit the Darjeeling Hills look forward to availing this joyride on the toy train. It is an enjoyable and memorable ride for them. Among the wonders of nature that one can experience during a tou\y train ride, Batasia Loop is one important attraction.
During the toy train ride, tourists can soak in the experience of local market, local people, several bridges and springs. The train journey also takes tourists through the greenery of the Hills, the luscious forests in the mountains, thus making it a joyous ride. It also passes through the famous tea gardens of the Darjeeling Hills. The snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan range are a sight to behold from the toy train.
The third highest peak of the world, Kanchenjunga, can also elicit a sense of exhilaration among the tourists.
Sir, the Darjeeling Hills have a lot to offer to tourists from across the world and has many attractions for adventure seekers too. People from across the world come here to enjoy the toy train ride. Sir, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, toy train, is a pride of India and is in dire need of modernisation, to attract more tourists.
Hence, I would request the Hon’ble Railway Minister, through you Sir, to take necessary action for restoring this heritage to its pristine glory.
