To boost trade and tourism, Bengal Govt plans a new road near Bhutan border
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee always stresses on the fact that Bengal is the gateway to Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and the states of north-eastern India.
Towards that end, the State Government is planning to build a road near the border of Bhutan. The detailed project report (DPR) and the feasibility report have already been submitted to the concerned department.
The 18 km road will run from Birpara in Alipurduar to Langkapara in Jalpaiguri (Madarihat block), on the border with Bhutan, and will cost Rs 136 crore. Tenders will be floated soon. The road will be crossed by three bridges. The entire road will be two-laned.
Economically, the region was once solely dependent on tea gardens. Over the years, though, Birpara has become a major trading hub of the region. In fact, it is now the most important trading town in the Dooars region of Alipurduar district. It is connected by road and railway to different regions of the country. Asian Highway 48 connects Birpara to Siliguri and Jalpaiguri in one direction, and directly to Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan, in the other.
The building of the road will also be a major impetus to developing the tourism infrastructure of the region.

ভুটানের সঙ্গে বৈদেশিক বাণিজ্যের পাশাপাশি পর্যটনে আরও বেশী জোর দিতে এবার রাজ্য সরকার আলিপুরদুয়ার জেলার বীরপাড়া থেকে জলপাইগুড়ি জেলার মাদারিহাট ব্লকের ল্যাঙ্কাপাড়া (ভুটান সীমান্ত) পর্যন্ত ১৮ কিলোমিটার নতুন রাস্তা তৈরির প্রকল্প হাতে নিয়েছে।
ইতিমধ্যেই এই নতুন রাস্তার ‘ডিটেলড প্রজেক্ট রিপোর্ট’ এবং ‘ফিজিবিলিটি রিপোর্ট’ জমা পড়েছে নবান্নে। প্রাথমিক ভাবে এই ১৮কিলোমিটার রাস্তার জন্য ১৩৬ কোটি টাকা বরাদ্দ করা হয়েছে। চলতি মাসেই টেন্ডার প্রক্রিয়া শুরু হবে।এই রাস্তায় তিনটি সেতুও তৈরী করতে হবে। এই পুরো রাস্তাটি হবে ২ লেনের।
একসময় বীরপাড়া অঞ্চলটির মূল অর্থনীতি ছিল চা বাগান। বিগত ২০ বছরে এই জায়গাটি আত্মপ্রকাশ করেছে বাণিজ্য হাব হিসেবে। এখান থেকে সড়ক ও রেলপথে দেশের বিভিন্ন বাণিজ্য শহরগুলির সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ গড়ে ওঠায় আন্তরাজ্য ও বৈদেশিক বানিজ্যে ব্যাপক উন্নতি করেছে বীরপাড়া। পর্যটন শিল্পতেও উন্নতি করেছে এই শহরটি।
একদিকে এশিয়ান হাইওয়ে ৪৮এর মাধ্যমে জলপাইগুড়ি, শিলিগুড়ি ও অন্য দিকে ভুটানের রাজধানী থিম্পুর সঙ্গে যুক্ত এই শহর। এখানকার সব থেকে বড় রেল স্টেশন হল দলগাঁও। এবার আরও বানিজ্যে জোর দিতে সড়ক পথেও যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা তৈরী হচ্ছে।
