Development Of The Hills In Mind, WB CM Meets GTA Board
WB CM Ms. Mamata Banerjee convened a meeting with the GTA Board at Richmond Hill, Darjeeling at 2 p.m. on Friday.
Three MLAs of the Hills – Rohit Sharma from Kurseong, Harka Bahadur Chettri from Kalimpong and Trilok Dewan from Darjeeling – were also present at the meeting, besides a host of government officials.
The Chief Minister addressed the press after the meeting ended.
Excerpts from the Chief Minister`s press conference :
“It was a very good meeting. We have discussed in details many pressing issues of the recent past. The GTA members are also happy; they are helpful and hopeful. They said they want to work together with the State Government. Together we will work for the development and progress of the Hills.
I have announced that we will first hold a bipartite meeting and then a tripartite meeting in Kolkata after the festive season is over and around the time of the Winter Assembly Session.
We have agreed that GTA will continue to function and the election of the members will be held soon.
We have discussed several issues related to an all round development of Hills during the hour-long meeting. We want to develop the roads up to Tiger Hills; we want to develop many tourist spots. We will appoint an expert committee who will identify the potential tourist spots; we will also launch cleanliness and beautification drives. 100 days work, cultural activities, sports etc were some of the issues we talked about. A marathon race will be organized in the Hills to attract more international tourists during the months of December and January. I request tourists all over the world to visit Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong, Mirik and experience the peace & beauty here.
I have requested the GTA not to call any more strikes in the Hills. Even the honourable High Court has given a verdict against bandhs. Also, bandhs are against the interest of the common people and the development of the people. It only causes destruction and loss.
My heart is with Darjeeling and it will always remain so. My brothers and sisters of the Hills please accept my advance greeting for Dipawali and Bhai Tika.“
