CM initiates prompt action to counter flood situation
Flood like situation arises: 14th and 15th October 2013
Most of the rivers in Paschim Medinipur district were flowing above the danger mark as huge amount of water had been released from Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) dams in Jharkhand.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee protested the release of excess water by Jharkhand and DVC without intimating the State. She wrote to the Prime Minister expressing her discontent.
CM convened urgent meeting at her residence with Rural Development Minister and Disaster Management Minister over the flood situation in the State.
Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee is then scheduled to visit Purba & Paschim Medinipur to provide relief materials by night.
The district administration meanwhile made arrangement for evacuation of people living in low lying areas to safe places and also kept boats and relief materials ready.
Relief camps have been opened in many places where people have been shifted due to the flood threat.

Disaster management well in advance: 11th October 2013
West Bengal Government had dispatched its disaster management teams to coastal areas of the State well in advance, to tackle the aftermath of cyclone Phailin which had hit neighbouring Odisha on 12th October.
Disaster management and civil defence personnel were deployed in the coastal areas to deal with the impact of the cyclone before it could make a landfall the State.
“We have dispatched several disaster management teams to the coastal areas of West Bengal including Diamond Harbour and Digha, “ Disaster Management Minister Javed Khan said on October 11. Mr. Khan also said a helpline was opened at the state secretariat. “We have also asked civil defence teams to reach the coastal areas to meet any eventuality, “ he added.
Powerful cyclone Phailin pounded the Odisha coast with wind speeds of over 200 kmph. Massive evacuations were conducted in the eastern coastal states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha in a bid to avoid casualties in the cyclone. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has offered help to Odisha.
