CM inaugurates Nabanna, the new Secretariat Building at Howrah
West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee on 5th October, along with thousands of State Government employees, shifted to the Howrah River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC) Building, a 15-storied high-rise on the banks of the Ganga in the Howrah district.
With the iconic Writers` Buildings undergoing restoration, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the temporary building of the state secretariat, which has been christened “Nabanna (New Harvest)” by Ms. Banerjee herself.
The HRBC Building on the day was decked up in flowers of all hues and wrapped in tight security as the Chief Minister formally threw it open amid sounds of bugles and counches.
The Chief Minister was given a guard of honour on the occasion after she raised the National Flag at the new Secretariat.
Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra,Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee and Ministers of State were present among others during the inauguration.
Security personnel, dog squads, VIP lanes, fire tenders were put in place for the mega event which witnessed the presence of top government officials, cabinet ministers among other dignitaries.
Eleven government departments (mostly under the Chief Minister) — CMO, Police Directorate, Home, Information and Cultural Affairs, Personnel and Administrative Reforms, Minority Affairs, Land and Land Reforms are housed in the new building besides Finance, Agriculture, Disaster Management and the PWD.
The Kolkata Police would look after the internal security of the building and the Howrah police would have jurisdiction outside.
The Mamata Banerjee government decided to shift the state secretariat out of the Writers` Building – from where the British once ruled India – to allow restoration of the heritage complex.
The State Government has appointed a team of experts to carry out the restoration.
