Bengal Govt to revive Birabati river through MGNREGA
In a unique move, the Panchayats and Rural Development Department has chalked out a comprehensive scheme to revive the Birabati river in Bankura district using funds from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) Scheme.
Birabati is considered the lifeline of Onda block. It flows across nine gram panchayats. Work is on to make the river navigable as well as aid irrigation. It will also make the river a reliable source of water for the people settled near its banks. If successful, the experiment will be replicated in other parts of Bengal.
Nearly 60 per cent of the work to construct a watershed has been completed. The creation of waterbodies has brought out palpable changes in Onda block and people are growing vegetables even during the dry season. It has been decided that pisciculture will be carried out in the water bodies. The water will also be used for irrigation.
Social forestry or orchard gardens will be set up on the banks of the water bodies. Vetiver grass has been planted on an 11 km stretch along the riverside; this helps in controlling erosion of the river bank.
বাঁকুড়ায় বিরাবতী নদীকে পুনরুজ্জীবিত করবে রাজ্য সরকার
পঞ্চায়েত ও গ্রামোন্নয়ন দপ্তর নিয়েছে এক অভিনব পদক্ষেপ। ১০০ দিনের কাজের আওতায় এবার বাঁকুড়া জেলার বিরাবতী নদীর পুনরুজ্জীবন করার উদ্যোগ নেওয়া হয়েছে। ন’টি গ্রাম পঞ্চায়েত দিয়ে বয়ে চলা এই নদীকে ওন্দা ব্লকের প্রাণকেন্দ্র বলেই গণ্য করা হয়।
এই নদীটিকে নৌকো চালানোর উপযোগী করার পাশাপাশি সেচের কাজের ভউপোযোগীও করে তোলা হবে। এছাড়াও, পার্শ্ববর্তী অঞ্চলে পানীয় জল সরবরাহও করা হবে এই নদী থেকেই। এই উদ্যোগ সফল হলে, রাজ্যের অন্যান্য জায়গাতেও অনুরূপ উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করা হবে।
ওয়াটারশেড তৈরীর প্রায় ৬০ শতাংশ কাজ শেষ। ওন্দা ব্লকে জলাশয় তৈরীর মাধ্যমে ওখানকার মানুষ ইতিমধ্যেই উপকৃত হয়েছেন। এখন এই অঞ্চলে সারা বছর সবজির ফলন হচ্ছে। এই জলাশয়গুলিতে মাছ চাষেরও সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে। এই জল সেচের কাজেও লাগবে।
এই জলাশয়গুলির ধারে অর্কিডের বাগান তৈরী করা হবে। এই নদীর পাড় বরাবর ১১ কিঃমিঃ জায়গা জুড়ে ভেটিভার ঘাস লাগানো হয়েছে। এর ফলে নদীর পাড়ের ভাঙন রোধ হবে।
