He graduated from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata and subsequently at École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, Paris in 1967. In 1972 he joined the Art Gallery of Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi as a Curator. He founded the Gallery 26 and Artists’ Forum in New Delhi in 1975 along with some leading painters of New Delhi. In 1986, he represented India in the ’Festival of Art’ in Baghdadwi. In 1987, he joined Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan as professor of painting. Beside his numerous paintings, exhibitions, he has written extensively on contemporary art. In 1966, Chowdhury was awarded the Prix le France de la Jeune Peinture in Paris, and, in 1986, received an award at the Second Biennale of Havana, Cuba. He was presented the Kalidas Sanman by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 2001.
