Tourism infrastructure in Bangla improving rapidly
Following the earnest efforts of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bangla is now one of the favourite destinations for tourists across India. It has one of the highest inflows among domestic tourists and is also climbing steadily up the chart of international tourist inflows.
The tourism sector has been witnessing monumental progress and development, which is the result of work being carried out by the Tourism Department across the State.
Here are some of the prominent markers in tourism sector of Bangla:
- The homestay capacity of the State has climbed up by 30 per cent, ensuring the livelihood of almost 50,000 people.
- Today, 67 per cent of Kolkata’s 3000+ hotel rooms are equipped with all modern facilities and remain occupied almost throughout the year. In financial year (FY) 2015-16, Bangla was ranked 3rd in India in this respect.
- The State is making rapid strides in the sphere of medical tourism. The number of medical tourists is expected to hit 24 lakh by 2020 and nearly 50 lakh within 2025.
- Projects like Bhorer Alo in Gajoldoba (Jalpaiguri district), Baul Bitan along the banks of Khowai River in Bolpur (Birbhum district), Jhar, an eco-tourism project in Jharkhali and a wildlife park, both in the Sundarbans, are in their developmental stages.
- The Bengal Safari Wildlife Park near Siliguri, Prakriti Tirtha at Motijheel in Murshidabad, Rangabitan Tourist Complex in Sriniketan near Santiniketan and the Sabuj Dwip Eco-Tourism Project in Bolagarh have successfully made their marks in people’s mind.
- Nazrul Tirtha, Mother’s Wax Museum and Kolkata Gate have given a new aura to New Town.
- Lakhs of people from India and abroad flock down together to the State to participate in the celebrations of the Red Road Durga Puja Carnival, Kolkata Christmas Festival, Poush Mela, Gangasagar Mela, Kenduli’s Jaydev Mela, Gangasagar Mela, etc.
