Gorkhaland Territorial Agreement to be signed today
Kolkata, July 18: West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee reached Bagdogra airport at around 3pm on Sunday and drove to Sukna, which is the venue for the historical signing of the tripartite agreement on Monday. The Gorkhaland Territorial Agreement will be signed between the West Bengal Government, Central Government and Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM). The treaty will be signed in the presence Union Morcha President Mr. Bimal Gurung and General Secretary Mr. Roshan Giri, Union Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram and West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee.
With the signing of the tripartite agreement between the West Bengal Government, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and the Central government will end the long-struggle of people residing in the hills deprived of the development in the past. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her press conference held last week in Kolkata made it clear that the issue was deferred in the past due to lack of initiative to solve the problem. `We have kept Sukna in North Bengal as the venue for signing the treaty owing to unpredictable weather and we don’t want any further delay in the same`, said Ms. Banerjee.
It may not be out of the context to mention that Ms. Banerjee had taken an initiative to bridge the gap and bring all the agencies on the discussion table.
Darjeeling Hill Council was constituted in 1988.
