Bengal Govt reviving Sanskrit learning centres
In order to revive the traditional Sanskrit schools of Bengal, known as ‘tol’ in Bengali, the State Government has created a university under which would be brought all Sanskrit colleges and tols.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, since coming to power in 2011, heading the Trinamool Congress Government, has done a lot to revive the cultural glory of Bengal. She has pushed numerous reforms and initiatives.
Bengal has had a hallowed heritage in Sanskrit education and scholarship, and Kolkata and Nabadwip in Nadia district have been the primary centres of Sanskrit education through tols.
The new university is creating a set of rules and regulations, and taking steps for improving the syllabus, for the almost 400 traditional schools.
The State Government is also setting up a centre for Sanskrit literary activities and research at Nabadwip, the design for the main gate of which, in the pattern of the tilaks worn by the traditional Sanskrit pandits, has been created by none other than the Chief Minister herself. Rs 26 crore has been sanctioned as the initial amount for the centre.
With these initiatives taking shape, Sanskrit education and propagation are getting the much-needed encouragement.

সংস্কৃত চর্চা, টোল সংস্কৃতি বলতে নদিয়ার নবদ্বীপ এবং উত্তর কলকাতাকেই বোঝাত। আজ তার প্রায় সব ধুয়ে মুছে সাফ। দু-একটা যা আছে তাও খাদের কিনারায় দাঁড়িয়ে। এই অবস্থায় হাল ধরতে নামল রাজ্য সরকার।
রাজ্যের সমস্ত টোলকে একই ছাতার তলায় এনে সংস্কৃত কলেজ ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে স্টাডি সেন্টারের অধীনে নিয়ে আসার সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে। একইসঙ্গে টোলের সংস্কৃত সাহিত্যের সিলেবাসেরও খোলনলচে বদলানো হবে। করে তোলা হবে সময়োপযোগী।
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বিধি তৈরির কাজ চলছে। বিধি কার্যকর হতেই টোলগুলি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধীনে নিয়ে আসা হবে। রাজ্যে আপাতত টোলের সংখ্যা প্রায় চারশোর কাছাকাছি। বিধি তৈরির পর টোলগুলির পঠনপাঠন, প্রশাসনিক দিকগুলিকে কীভাবে আরও উন্নতমানের করে তোলা যায়, তা নিয়ে আলোচনা হবে।
টোলগুলির উন্নয়নের পাশাপাশি জোর দেওয়া হচ্ছে সংস্কৃত সাহিত্যের গবেষণার ওপরও। রাজ্যে তৈরি হতে চলেছে সংস্কৃত সাহিত্য চর্চা ও গবেষণা কেন্দ্র। নদীয়া জেলার নবদ্বীপে গৌরাঙ্গ সেতুর পাশে এই কেন্দ্রটি গড়া হবে।
সংস্কৃত ও বৈদিক সাহিত্যের চর্চার জন্য তৈরি এই গবেষণাকেন্দ্রের প্রবেশপথের নকশা এঁকেছেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। অনেকটা পণ্ডিতের কপালের তিলকের আকারে তৈরি করা হচ্ছে। গোটা প্রকল্পটির বাস্তবায়নের জন্য ইতিমধ্যেই রাজ্য সরকার ২৬ কোটি টাকা বরাদ্দ করেছে।
সরকারের উদ্যোগের ফলে টোলের সুদিন ফেরার আশায় অনেকে।
