Bengal Govt to promote orange cultivation in Buxa Hills
With a view to make people in the Buxa Hills in Alipurduar district self-reliant, the Bengal Government’s Panchayat and Rural Development Department has taken up a scheme to train them in orange cultivation. Around 22,557 high yielding saplings have been distributed among 309 selected families.
The money to look after the saplings will be taken from the funds available under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) Scheme.
To implement the scheme and maintain the saplings in the first year, every family got 55 days’ work and in the second and third year, they will get 20 days’ work. The trees will start bearing fruits from the end of third year, about 40 to 50 oranges per tree; from the fifth year each tree will yield 200 to 500 oranges. Every family will be able to earn anywhere between Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 per year.
Before the commencement of the scheme, every family was given training by the district administration. The district administration took up the scheme to produce the Mandarin variety of oranges. In the first year, the families were given training in planting the saplings and nurturing them. A sum of Rs 11.35 lakh was allotted under MGNREGA.
Though qualitatively, oranges from the Buxa region are better than their counterparts in other areas of north Bengal, over the last few years, production has taken a hit due to crop disease.
Therefore, the Rural Development Department has taken this initiative to train farmers to produce better quality fruits and hence, enhance their economic condition considerably.

বক্সা পাহাড়ে কমলালেবু চাষে জোর
আলিপুরদুয়ার জেলার বক্সা পাহাড়ের বাসিন্দাদের স্বনির্ভর করতে রাজ্য সরকারের পঞ্চায়েত ও গ্রামোন্নয়ন দপ্তর সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে এই অঞ্চলে ম্যান্ডারিন প্রজাতির কমলালেবু চাষে জোর দেবে। পাহাড়ের ৩০৯ পরিবারকে যে ২২,৫৫৭ কমলালেবুর চারা দেওয়া হয়েছে সেগুলির ফলন খুব বেশী। এই চারাগাছগুলি রক্ষণাবেক্ষণের খরচ দেওয়া হবে ১০০ দিনের কাজের তহবিল থেকে।
প্রথম বছর চারাগুলির দেখাশোনা করতে প্রতিটি পরিবার ৫৫দিন করে কাজ পাবেন। দ্বিতীয় ও তৃতীয় বছরে সেটি হবে পরিবার পিছু ২০ দিন। তৃতীয় বছরের শেষ থেকে এই গাছে ফল আসা শুরু হবে। ৪০ থেকে ৫০ টি লেবু হয় প্রতি গাছে। পঞ্চম বছর থেকে প্রতি গাছে ২০০ থেকে ৫০০ কমলালেবু হয়। এর মাধ্যমে প্রতি পরিবার ৪০০০০ থেকে ৫০০০০ টাকা আয় করতে পারবেন প্রতি বছর।
এই প্রকল্প শুরু হওয়ার আগে জেলা প্রশাসনের তরফ থেকে প্রতি পরিবারকে প্রশিক্ষণ দেওয়া হয়েছে।
