Sundarini Naturals’ organic sweets to become widely available through franchises

For the last few months, the State Government’s brand, Sundarini Naturals, has been selling organic sweets in Kolkata. The sweets have started earning a name for themselves for their taste and quality.

Being organic, that is, free from chemicals, the cost of manufacturing and consequently, the prices of the sweets are a little more but they are definitely worth the while.

To make these sweets widely available, the Government has decided to adopt the franchise model. Advertisements have been placed in newspapers, asking interested parties to become franchisees.

The franchisee model would also open up an avenue for people to set up their own businesses, selling first-rate products. Initially, permission for five more stores in Kolkata would be given – at Haltu, Diamond Park, Muchipara, Lake Market and Santoshpur.

The brand is owned by Sundarban Cooperative Milk and Livestock Producers’ Limited (SCMLPL), which is an initiative of State Animal Resources Development Department.

A speciality of the cooperative society is that it is run by women, and all of them are poor villagers from the Sundarbans region. The setting up of the brand, a brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has enabled them to become self-sufficient. Packaged milk, ghee, honey, rice, sona moong dal, eggs, paneer and several other products are sold under the brand name.

It is worthwhile to mention that on June 1, 2018, on the occasion of World Milk Day, Sundarini Naturals was awarded by the National Dairy Development Board for its superior quality of dairy products.

Sundarini Naturals to open outlets for organic sweet

Sundarini Naturals, a food brand of the State Government’s Sundarban Cooperative Milk and Livestock Producers’ Union Ltd (SCMLPL), is going for further product diversification. It will soon come up with organic sweets, to be sold at two exclusive outlets it is setting up in Kolkata – at Kankurgachi and Maniktala.

The cooperative organisation was set up with the blessing of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2015 to give women of the Sundarbans an opportunity for an honest livelihood. In fact, the name ‘Sundarini Naturals’ itself was given by the Chief Minister.

Starting from milk and dairy products, the brand diversified into sweets, aromatic rice and pulses. And now it is the turn of organic sweets.

The two stores are planned to be inaugurated between January 26 and 28. They are being set up in public-private partnership (PPP) mode. App-based delivery to households from these two stores will also be introduced soon after.

According to a senior official of SCMLPL, depending on the demand for such sweets, more such ventures under PPP mode will be started.

The special attraction at the first two outlets will be the ‘fruit delite’ and ‘orange Bangla’ varieties of sweets, that will be priced at around Rs 25 to 30 per piece. The other attractions will be rosogolla, gulab jamun, rajbhog, roshomalai and sandesh varieties like golappatti, barfi and kalakand, priced Rs 12 upwards.

The award-winning Sundarini Naturals brand of the State Government is soon going to sell organically-made factory-processed milk on a large scale, packed in environment-friendly easily degradable packets (which can break down easily in soil). The entire process – from rearing cows to producing milk – would be organic, that is, no chemicals would be used.

In an initiative to empower women of the Sundarbans, a cooperative named Sundarban Co-Operative Milk & Livestock Producers Union Ltd. was started in 2015. Its brand was named Sundarini Naturals by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

For its achievement in helping almost 3,000 downtrodden women to fight back in life through the making and selling of cow milk, ghee, honey from the jungles of the Sundarbans, eggs of ducks and hens, moong dal and rice, the National Dairy Development Board recently awarded Sundarban Co-Operative as the best milk cooperative and selected Sundarini Naturals as an ideal model, fit for replication elsewhere in the country.

Every day, 10,000 litres of milk would be packed at the state-of-the-art factory, to be built inside the Kisan Mandi in Mathurapur-1 block in South 24 Parganas. The work of building the plant would be completed by December.

Each pouch would be of 500 ml and would be priced at competitive rates. The initial effort would be to capture a portion of the Kolkata market. Sundarban Co-Operative is in talks with various malls to stock its brands there.
