Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today visited the accident site at Majerhat where the flyover collapsed on September 4, 2018.

After inspecting the ongoing rescue and relief work, she addressed the media where she announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the deceased person. She also announced compensation of Rs 1 lakh for those who were grievously injured and Rs 50,000 for other injured people.

Highlights of the Chief Minister’s speech:

This could have become a even graver tragedy. The casualty figure could have been higher. But the local people saved many lives. One life was lost, two people are missing. Those who were injured are being taken care of at several hospitals.

A life lost cannot be compensated by money. But, we will give a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased and Rs 50,000 will be given to the people who were injured. Rs 1 lakh will be given to those who were grievously injured.

Our full team, along with locals, worked strongly and rescued people who were trapped within hours. The local people played a great role. I would not undermine their contribution with just words of thanks; we will reward them in due course of time.

An emergency meeting will be held tomorrow at 3:30 PM. Bangla is a river-centric place. There are many bridges here. Even, all documents are not in place. We will continue the monitoring work with all available technical experts.

Metro work is going on in the vicinity. Many locals also said that there were vibrations – almost like earthquake – during the construction work. For the last nine years, the work is going on.

I know the people of South 24 Parganas will be inconvenienced. The administration will take requisite steps to make people’s commuting easier.

The Bangla Government is planning to add 2,000 megawatt (MW) of power over the next five years and is also planning to incorporate the latest technologies to reduce distribution and transmission losses. These decisions were announced by the State Power Minister at the 9th Energy Conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) recently.

The 2,000MW will be a mix of thermal and hydro, as well as of solar and other alternative sources of power. Part of the 2,000 MW will be 300 MW of solar power.

According to the minister, efforts are also being made to improve the quality of power. Old thermal power plants are gradually being replaced by modern facilities to improve efficiency in power generation.

The State Government has already made a significant improvement in the field of power generation. Renewable energy has been given special thrust since Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee came to power.

The minister said at the conclave that renewable energy has become an important component for achieving energy security. From 1 MW when the Trinamool Congress came to power, solar power capacity of Bangla is now around 200 MW.

The State Government has set up a 27-member committee to celebrate the birth bicentenary of one of Bangla’s icons, the social reformer and educationist Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.

State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee will be the president of the body. The members of the committee comprise four Cabinet ministers – those of transport, irrigation and waterways, information technology and women and child development and social welfare, the chief secretary, secretaries of several departments and councils, principal of Ramakrishna Mission, Jhargram, four prominent journalists, noted academicians and several others

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar had played an important role in spreading education, especially among children. He had written Barnaparichay, Kathamala, Batrish Singhasan and Betal Panchabingsati for children. For those pursuing Sanskrit, he wrote Upakramanika.

Over the curse of the last few years, the jatra industry of Bangla is well on its way out of intensive care. Thanks to the special initiative of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the glory days are gradually on their way back.

From 2012, the Bangla Government has been making serious efforts to revive the stature of everyone involved with jatra.

An annual Jatra Festival is held now, along with similar festival in various districts, all of which are organised by the State Government. More and more jatra artistes are getting registered with the government.

The annual remuneration of jatra artistes, provided by the government, has also increased. In 2012, it was Rs 6,000, now it is Rs 9,000. The government also provides some more types of grants.

The annual Bina Dasgupta Memorial Award and Shantigopal-O-Tapan Kumar Award were instituted by the Trinamool Congress Government. The former, an award for lifetime excellence in jatra craft, is being given since 2013 while the latter is being given since 2017.

Besides, two legends, Makhanlal Natta and Chapal Bhaduri, were bestowed the Bangabibhushan (in 2014) and the Banga Bhushan (in 2017), respectively – awards instituted by the Trinamool Congress Government.

With the inspiration of Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the State Government is celebrating Sanskriti Dibas today, on the occasion of Rakhi Bandhan, to spread the message of communal harmony.

The State Youth Services and Sports Department is hosting the programmes.

In 1905, Rabindranath Tagore had observed Rakhi Bandhan as a mark of unity between Hindus and Muslims when the British decided to divide Bengal.

Sanskriti Dibas is being observed in 342 Blocks, 122 municipalities, six Municipal Corporations and in all the 144 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, all district headquarters and GTA.

It may be mentioned here that Mamata Banerjee has time and again spread the message of unity and harmony at various public meetings. She has urged people to uphold the spirit of Bangla which stands for peace, progress and prosperity.

The handloom and handicrafts sectors of Bangla have seen a massive revival, under the guidance of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in the last seven years.

From the issuance of identity cards, to the distribution of better equipment or the training of artisans – the State Government has extended all help to the people engages with this industry.

Thanks to the various fairs and exhibitions, and the Biswa Bangla Brand, handicrafts and handloom products of Bangla have now gone global.

Handloom industry flourishes

  • 5,31,075 Weavers’ Identity Cards (WIC) distributed in 2017, against nil as in 2011
  • 66,500 credit cards issued to weavers
  • 95,000 weavers imparted skill development training
  • 75,889 looms provided to loom-less weavers
  • 44 lakh cheaper variety cotton sarees produced
  • 16 times increase in creation of additional person-days – 533 lakh between financial years (FY) 2011-12 to 2017-18 as compared to 33.18 lakh till 2010-11
  •  1 lakh weavers being provided marketing support through Tanter Haats
  • 24.15 km link road constructed for better road network for handloom clusters Mega Carpet Clusters launched covering 3,500 weavers
  • Project Baluchari being implemented, involving 2,500 weavers
    Tantuja turned to a profit-making organisation from 2014-15, after making loss for decades – Rs 204.9 crore business turnover achieved by Tantuja in FY 2017-18

 

Revival of Bangla handicrafts

  • 5,31,772 Artisan Identity Cards issued between FYs 2011-12 and 2017-18 as compared to 37,213 between FYs 2006-07 and 2017-18
    12,000 credit cards issued to artisans
  • 10 Rural Craft Hubs established (in collaboration with UNESCO), benefitting 25,000 artisans. The project has attracted about 80,000 tourists in the last 3 years.
  • 27 marketing outlets set up for artisans in the last 3 years
  • Rs 924 crore business generated from fairs and exhibitions
  • Manjusha started making profit from FY 2015-16 after making loss for three decades; over Rs 91 crore turnover achieved in FY 2017-18
  • 8 Biswa Bangla showrooms functioning in and outside Bengal, from which more than Rs 50 crore in sales generated till 2017

The West Bengal Khadi & Village Industries Board, under the Micro, Small & Medium enterprises and Textiles Department, has made significant progress in helping artisans across Bengal get access to proper, organised forums.

This has helped them in getting a respectable livelihood by using skills, many of which are handed down from generation to generation.

  • 8.5 times increase in number of khadi artisans between financial years (FY) 2011-12 and 2017-18
  • Over 29 times increase in sales of khadi products between FYs 2011-12 and 2017-18 to Rs 96.8 crore
  • Project Muslin being implemented, covering 3,000 muslin weavers
  • Project Saal Leaf launched involving 1,800 self-help groups (SHG), with a Centre of Excellence established in Jhargram
  • Project Mat launched, benefitting 2,500 mat artisans
  • Project Sabai launched, involving 2,100 artisansThe above facts prove once again that the khadi artisans have never seen a time as good as under the kind patronage of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Bangla Government celebrated Independence Day with full honours today. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hoisted the National Flag at Red Road. Parades and cultural functions were held at the venue. The CM was given Guard of Honour.

Bangla Government conveyed the message of communal harmony at this year’s Independence Day parade on Red Road. A tableau based on the theme of ‘Oikotan’ (Harmony) was a part of the parade. Bauls and folk artistes participated in these tableaux which projected the ‘unity in diversity’ in Bangla.

Besides the tableau based on ‘Oikotan’, there were tableauxs on the popular schemes and projects of the State Government, like Kanyashree, Sabuj Sathi, Ruposhree, Sabuj Shree, Khadya Sathi and Safe Drive Save Life.

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack against BJP president Amit Shah on the NRC issue on Tuesday.

Speaking at Nabanna, the state secretariat, she questioned the BJP chief and asked whether his parents had birth certificates.

The brutal attack came after Mamata Banerjee met a delegation from United Bengali Forum who had come from Assam to highlight their plight over the NRC issue.

“I want to ask Amit Shah, does his mother and father have birth certificates? If you ask me, I do not have my parent’s birth certificates. Would Swami Vivekananda have the certificates? Atal ji is ill now, so I cannot ask him, but I wish I could ask him whether he has all the certificates? One family can keep the record, not all. I belonged to a backward family, certificates were not maintained,” Mamata Banerjee said. She also said, “Would Gandhiji’s family have certificates?”

She went on to call the entire NRC exercise as politically motivated. “This is a political move ahead of the elections. Sometimes they (the Centre) will play India-Pakistan, sometimes they will play India-China. I am also hearing that they are getting the currency notes printed outside the country,” the CM alleged.

She alleged that Bengali-speaking population was being targeted. She claimed a majority of the 40 lakh who did not make it to the Assam draft list were a Bengali-speaking people.

“Of the total 40 lakh, 25 lakhs are Bengali Hindus, 13 lakhs Bengali Muslims and 2 lakh Nepalis, Biharis and others. I have shown you so many documents. People in Punjab and Pakistan speak the same language. People in Bengal and Bangladesh speak the same language. Isn’t Hindi and Urdu widely spoken in the country? If you do not like a particular community, you cannot spread hatred like this. Hasina ji (Bangla PM) is welcome, others not? Didn’t Bengal participate in the freedom struggle? What’s wrong in speaking the Bangla language?” she said.

She further said that even cows should now be given certificates to identify whether a cow is a refugee or an infiltrator. “My question is to all the Gau-rakshaks, is cow a refugee or an infiltrators. Make certificates for cows so that we know whether they are refugees or infiltrators. Amit Shah may not eat Hilsa fish. But people in Bangladesh, Bengal, UP and Bihar eat Hilsa fish. Is Hilsa a refugee or an infiltrator? This is super-emergency,” she claimed.

Attacking the BJP-led central government over exclusion of 40 lakh people in the final draft of Assam-NRC, Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday accused the saffron party of being “anti-Bengali”.

Taking a swipe at the BJP, the Trinamool Congress chief asked if hilsa fish, Jamdani saree, sandesh and mishti doi, which are originally from East Bengal ( in undivided India), would also be branded as “infiltrators or refugees”.

Asserting that these 40 lakh people are “very much Indians”, she questioned the criteria on which they have been excluded.

The CM has been attacking the BJP government at the Centre over National Register for Citizens (NRC) which has excluded names of over 40 lakh citizens in the final draft for want of necessary documents in Assam.

“What is going on in the country is injustice. The BJP with their extremist ideology is trying to create division among the people. I think they are playing the politics of revenge among the countrymen. We are not for this kind of politics,” she said.

She accused the BJP of being “anti-Bengalis” and “anti-Bangla”.

They (the BJP) must not forget that speaking Bengali is not a crime. It is the fifth most spoken language in the world. What is BJP’s problem with Bangla? Are they scared of the intellect of the Bengalis, their culture. They must not forget that Bangla is the cultural mecca of the country,” she said.
