Bengal Govt to open geriatric care units in district hospitals

The Bengal Government is planning to set up comprehensive geriatric care units in various districts hospitals of the State. The units would be exclusive centres for the elderly, which would understand their medical backgrounds and offer them customised care.

The project will be carried out in various phases, with pilot projects in some districts to start with.

Currently, there are separate arrangements for elderly citizens in the outpatient departments (OPD) of all the State-run hospitals and medical colleges in Bengal. The existing infrastructure of elderly care in some of the hospitals across the State will be given a complete overhaul.

Specialised geriatric care centres would be set at the district-level where proficient geriatricians and allied medical professionals will provide comprehensive assessment to address all-round needs of a patient and recommend the best treatment.

According to sources in the Health Department, there are plans to divide the geriatric care centres into four zones – Outpatient Care, In-Patient Care, Emergency Care and Home Health Care. They will offer comprehensive physical, cognitive and psychosocial assessments, a personal care plan, rehabilitation, and recommendations on safe use of medicines.

Fuel Price Hike: Abhishek Banerjee walks home as a mark of protest

The Trinamool Congress and several associations today took part in a huge protest rally at the foot of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Mayo Road. Speakers highlighted the plight of the common man in the face of all essential prices going up because of the incessant rise in petrol and diesel prices. The rally culminated with a speech by All-India Trinamool Youth Congress President Abhishek Banerjee, in which he exhorted those present to continue with the protest by boycotting all transport and walking home from the protest rally.

Highlights of Abhishek Banerjee’s speech:

At the very beginning, I want to announce a special decision. After the culmination of today’s meeting, we are going to walk home and boycott transport to protest the fuel price hike. Those who are willing may please join us in this protest.

The prices of petrol and diesel have been going up every day for the past 16 days. There is no abatement, there is no compensation. This is affecting the prices of almost everything, hurting the common man badly. Very soon, thanks to the Modi government at the Centre, the price of petrol will reach a century. Before that, we must try to bowl the team out, so that the woes and suffering of the people all over the country will cease.

One after the other, the Modi government has been pursuing anti-people policies. But let me tell you, the Trinamool Congress is not a party that will welt to this continuous onslaught. With every new threat, we stand steadfast and know how to counter each of them. They promised “achhe din”, they promised jobs, they promised so many things…but all this is just talk. Very unlike what the Trinamool Congress has been able to do under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. We have delivered what we have promised.

They are trying to dictate what the people should wear, what to eat, where to go, where to not go, whom to speak with, whom to meet – is this the freedom that people should be subjected to? For every juncture of one’s life, one is required to produce Aadhaar card. Is this not curbing one’s freedom and right to privacy? These are policies that the our party is vehemently against. We stand for the welfare of the people. That is our primary concern.

Another protest against the fuel price hike will be held by the Trinamool Youth Congress on May 31 in a similar manner. We will not stop till there is relief for the common man. The Karnataka poll outcome has sounded their farewell bell. We will bid them the remaining goodbye with the vote in 2019.

Bengal Govt plans to implement ‘Nijo Griho Nijo Bhumi’ in the Hills in a big way

Now that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has brought back peace to the Hills, the developmental projects of the State Government are also gradually reaching all the people.

The latest plan by the Government will see the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) administering the Nijo Griho Nijo Bhumi Prakalpa extensively in the districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

It was being administered there but the earlier GTA board had stopped that activity. Now things are getting back to normal.

Under the scheme, launched by Mamata Banerjee on October 18, 2011, 5 decimal of land is provided to the homeless and landless.

Another important aspect of this decision to implement the scheme is that tea garden workers can also apply as the plantations are located on land leased from the State Government.

To make things easier, applications can be submitted in block offices, block Land and Land Reforms Department offices and gram panchayat offices. Committees have been constituted in each of the eight blocks comprising the two districts which include the block development officer, block land and land reforms officer and a member of the Board of Administrators of the GTA.

Applications for the blocks of Kalimpong-1, Kurseong, Mirik, Sukhiapokhari, Rungli Rungliot and Darjeeling-Poolbazar will be received from June 4 to 9. For Kalimpong-2, it will be from June 11 to 16 while for Gorubathan it will be from June 18 to 23.

Swarojgar Corporation will develop 76 villages as model villages

To make people of rural regions self-sufficient, West Bengal Swarojgar Corporation Limited (WBSCL) has decided to develop 76 villages across the State as model villages. The villages have been selected in such a way that two each have been chosen from 38 subdivisions, across 11 districts.

In collaboration with various departments, Swarojgar Corporation will undertake various developmental projects in these villages like cultivation of fish, digging of ponds, animal husbandry, and others.

As it is, unemployed youths across the State are given loans under Swami Vivekananda Swanirbhar Karmasuchi Prakalpa. Under this new project, rural youth would be given a certain preference. They would be given, free of cost, fish, chicken and duck hatchlings, and cows, buffaloes and goats. Taking up animal husbandry would enable rural youths to earn Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 per month, according to Government officials.

Based on the results from these 76 villages, such coordinated inter-departmental activities would be undertaken across many more villages.

According to WBSCL officials, as a result of this project, thousands of youth will find self-employment. The 11 districts to be covered in the first phase are North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, Murshidabad, Jhargram, Purulia and Paschim Medinipur. Nine more districts have been planned to be covered next year.

Soon after coming to power in 2011, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had made self-employment for the jobless one of her priorities, and the State Government’s efforts have been bearing positive results.

From giving stipends to the jobless to set up business to setting an Employment Bank to giving loans under Swami Vivekananda Swanirbhar Karmasuchi Prakalpa to various other projects, the developments have been numerous and far-reaching.

Opposition alliance bereft of ideology, only to stop development: Abhishek Banerjee

All India Trinamool Youth Congress Chairperson Abhishek Banerjee addressed a public rally at Khandarui in Dantan-2 block in the district of Paschim Medinipur.

He hit out at the Opposition, saying the CPI(M), BJP and Congress have made an alliance which is bereft of ideology, just to stop the developmental activities taken up by the Trinamool Congress Government. However, the people of the State would show the door to this alliance, he said, adding that opposing Mamata Banerjee is akin to opposing development.

He also said that the BJP will not be able to return to power at the Centre in 2019. Abhishek said, BJP should concentrate on how to win Delhi, and then only turn its attention to Bengal.

Abhishek Banerjee pointed out that many members of the CPI(M) are now campaigning for the saffron party; he also reminded people about the acts of violence committed by the CPI(M) in Nandigram, in Jangalmahal and in many other places. He also said that even after enjoying power for 34 years, the CPI(M) did not bring about any development for Bengal.

Abhishek said the people living in rural areas know what the Trinamool Congress has done for the development of villages for the last five years.

Rabindranath Tagore is timeless: Mamata Banerjee

Today is 25se Boishakh – the 157th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. The day is being observed across the State with full fervour.

A cultural programme was organised by the State Information and Culture Department today at Rabindra Sadan. Titled ‘Kobi Pronam’, the function was inaugurated by the Chief Minister.

Highlights of the CM’s speech:

It is impossible to discuss patriotism, education, culture, environment, love, separation or any other subject with a reference to Rabindranath. He was ‘Bishwa Kobi’ (world poet).

Rabindranath is omnipresent. He belongs to everyone. Poetry, plays, music, painting – he has left his mark in every sphere.

Rabindranath’s writings are our driving force, our inspiration.

Rabindranath showed the way to the rest of the world. It is our pride that he was born in Bengal.

Rabindranath epitomised humamnism, modernism, culture, senstivity, patriotism. Gandhiji gave him the title ‘Gurudev’.

Rabindranath loved people of all communities and classes equally. He stood for unity and harmony, which are burning issues in this day and age. Even, Netaji, Gandhiji and Ambedkar believed in these ideals.

This day is like Bengali new year. Some people call this day World Culture Day, while others celebrate this day as Rabi Dibas.

Rabindranath Tagore is timeless. He will live in our hearts as long as culture and civilization exists on earth.

Rabindranath’s “Where are the mind is without fear” is an inspiration for the youth.

Being oblivious about Rabindranath is like forgetting one’s culture. We will live with our heads held high, following the ideals espoused by Rabindranath. We will not be led astray by intimidation.
