UPA govt. promises to provide financial aid in West Bengal

Kolkata, July 17: Union Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee met West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee and discussed the financial aspects. The meeting is being looked upon as having great significance in the wake of the signing of the tripartite agreement to solve the hill issue. It is quite natural that the Chief Minister would need financial assurance before her trip to North Bengal, where she is expected to announce special packages.

Speaking on this occasion Mr. Mukherjee said, `The UPA government will continue to support the state government in regard of fulfilling the new economic target`. However, he agreed that there are certain financial constraints which the state government must realize. Ms. Banerjee said that she too will continue to support the UPA government at the center.

Mr. Mukherjee informed that an annual plan of Rs 22,224 crore had been sanctioned for Bengal for the current fiscal year and mentioned that there was an increase of 59% in the Plan compared to the previous fiscal year. `We at the center will continue to provide all assistance and help the state to reach its economic goals`, said Mr. Mukherjee.
