Mission Darjeeling accomplished, CM keeps her promise
Kolkata, July 19:The signing of historic tripartite hill agreement – Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) was signed between West Bengal Home Secretary, Union Home Ministry Joint Secretary and GJM General Secretary. GTA will end the stalemate situation and is expected to bring fresh wave of development across the hills. The accord is an outcome of a series of talks initiated by Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee. `The hills have many problems and so does other regions which needs to explored and solved, no two regions can have identical problems`, said Ms. Banerjee during her press conference in Kolkata last week. GTA will comprise the Hills sub-divisions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong.
`We are looking after the possibility if Dooars and Terai regions should be included in GTA. I feel everybody should receive what they deserve, both Dooars and Terai were equally important to us like Darjeeling`, said Chief Minister. However, referring to the frowns on the name of GTA, she said that the draft was prepared on August 17, 2010.
`This is just at an initial stage and there is a stupendous task ahead which needs to be rebuilding brick by brick. People living here belong to different communities, religions, cultures and races` said Mr. Chidambaram, the Union Home Minister who assured that the centre will extend all cooperation whenever required. He reiterated that the Union Government will keep a vigil on the rebuilding process in the hills.
On the second leg of her tour to Darjeeling, CM addressed a gathering at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri. There Ms. Banerjee unveiled a series of projects for the people of North Bengal. She laid the foundation stone for a table tennis academy in Siliguri, inaugurated a cold storage under Kishan Vision project at Bagdogra. Apart from that Ms. Banerjee flagged off a MG Railbus to ply between Siliguri Junction and Bagdogra section, a BG train service between Siliguri and Alubari (BG) section.
