How Kanyashree Prakalpa transformed Sonia Parveen’s life
Sonia Parveen had just stepped into her teens. She had big dreams—complete school, train and get a job as a nurse or a police officer. All of a sudden she got a marriage proposal from a slightly elderly man, but well-settled in life. For a family of eight completely dependent on the income of Sonia’s father, an auto-rickshaw driver, nothing could have been better news. But Sonia resisted and the Kanyashree Prakalpa is the reason she could.
Sonia’s village Arijullapur in North 24 Parganas district wakes up to the crackle and laughter of over a thousand girls cycling their way to school, Arijullapur Siddiqa High Madrasah. “It has been possible to make one-fourth of the population, especially girls, school-bound. This is largely because of the government’s Kanyashree Prakalpa—annual scholarships and one-time grant to encourage girl students of poor families to study,” said headmaster Abu Tahir Md Mustafa. Within a year of the Kanyashree Prakalpa being launched was launched on October 1, 2013, the Madrasah saw a surprising increase in the number of girls attending higher classes. Dropouts among girl students fell from 100 to 30 and the number of child marriages went down from 30 a year to seven. This was 2014. Today an unprecedented number of female students are registered under the scheme.

Over the years the stories of women receiving the exposure and opportunities they deserve have become prominent and have been captured by a number of media sources, including the Oscar-Winning director, Megan Mylan’s short film on the scheme. The film documents the life of an empowered woman in rural Bengal, skilled to support herself and fight the pressures of early marriage. Shot in Cooch Behar, a rural district in Bengal, this ten minute film depicts the scheme’s contribution to women entrepreneurship and resulting self sufficiency.
Sonia Parveen is among the 41 lakh girls who have been empowered by this scheme. Like her, Anjupa Khatoon (in Cooch Behar) or Nandita Das (in Hooghly) have been able to pursue their dreams, thanks to Mamata Banerjee’s Kanyashree project. Bengal has shown the way to the world once again.
কন্যাশ্রীর দৌলতে বদলে গেছে সোনিয়া পারভিনের জীবন, জেনে নিন কিভাবে
সোনিয়া পারভিন সদ্য কিশোরী হয়েছে। তার চোখে অনেক স্বপ্ন – স্কুলের পড়া শেষ করা, প্রশিক্ষণ নেওয়া, নার্স বা পুলিশ আধিকারিকের চাকরি পাওয়া। কিন্তু হঠাৎই বিয়ের প্রস্তাব আসে তার জন্য। সোনিয়ার বাবা পেশায় একজন অটোচালক, সংসারে আট জনের ভার তার ওপর। তাই স্বাভাবিকভাবেই বিয়ের প্রস্তাবে রাজি হয়ে যান তিনি। কিন্তু কন্যাশ্রী প্রকল্পের সৌজন্যে সোনিয়া তার বিয়ে আটকাতে সফল হয়।
সোনিয়ার বাড়ি উত্তর ২৪ পরগণার আরিজুল্লাপুরে। সেখানে এখন হাজার হাজার কন্যাশ্রী সবুজ সাথী সাইকেলে চেপে স্কুলে বা মাদ্রাসায় যায়। এই প্রকল্প ২০১৩ সালে চালু হওয়ার পর, এক বছরের মধ্যে মাদ্রাসার উঁচু ক্লাসগুলিতে নজরকাড়া ভাবে বেড়ে যায় ছাত্রীদের সংখ্যা। মেয়েদের মধ্যে স্কুলছুটের সংখ্যা ১০০ থেকে কমে ৩০শে নেমে আসে। মেয়েদের মধ্যে বাল্যবিবাহের সংখ্যাও ৩০ থেকে কমে দাঁড়ায় ৭তে। (সূত্র লাইভমিন্ট)
বিশ্ববন্দিত এই প্রকল্পের সাফল্য নিয়ে অস্কার পুরস্কার প্রাপ্ত পরিচালক মেগান মিলান একটি তথ্যচিত্রও তৈরী করেছেন।
সোনিয়া পারভিনের মত ৪১ লক্ষ মেয়ে আজ সুফল পাচ্ছে, সৌজন্যে মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের কন্যাশ্রী প্রকল্পকে। বাংলা আরও একবার বিশ্বকে পথ দেখালো।
